This is a video about a crazy mystery honeybee swarm. I am still not sure if this honeybee swarm originated in my apiary or if this honeybee swarm came from somewhere else. The one thing I do know is I finally caught my first honeybee swarm; kind of. Actually, these honeybees caught themselves and then swarmed again. It was like a boomerang. They left, came back, left, came back, etc...

Setting Beetle Traps - Hunting Hive Beetles - Meeting the new Sage Queen -Updated Leader Board.
In this Video We will be setting the beetle blaster hive beetle traps in all of the hives. We will seek and destroy any hive beetles we find along the way. We will also look for a new Queen bee in the Yellow hive and welcome the sage hive to the mix and try to avoid bee stings from the hives. Stay tuned until the end to see an updated Leader Board. Some hives get fussy and some bees pretend they are Africanized killer bees. Well, maybe not that aggressive but they do force me to run from the hives for a moment.

One Board Build | DIY Screened Bottom Board | We will use one board to build a screened bottom board.
In this video, we will do another one board build. Using just one board, we will be building a honeybee house screened bottom board. This is a quick, cheap, and effective way to build the foundation of any beehive. The bees will appreciate the ventilation whether you live in Georgia or Iowa. You can't go wrong with this quick One Board Build. I use screened bottom boards on all of my hives and they work wonders to ventilate the hive as well as drop hive beetles and their larva directly out the bottom.
I hope you enjoy this one board build screened bottom board and if you happen to build it please give the Bug Farmer a shout out on your channel if you are a creator. If you are not a creator please let me know in the comments that you built the One Board Build Screened Bottom Board and tell me how you like it.

How to stop Small Hive Beetles? Installing the Guardian small hive beetle entrance on all hives.
The battle between beekeepers and small hive beetles continues year after year, but this year someone invented a solution. I will be installing Guardian small hive beetle deterrent in my entrance reducers in an effort to prevent small hive beetles from getting into the hive. If I can keep the small hive beetles out of the hive I can stop using the beetle blaster and not risk spilling oil in the hive which would result in killing my bees. I learned about the Guardian small hive beetle deterrent from Michael Fike and Barnyard Bees so I thought I would give it a try.
We will check back in a few weeks to see how they have done and see if they were worth the money. If you are interested in obtaining these Guardian beetle preventers you can purchase them at Barnyard Bees. https://barnyardbees.com/

How to Stop a Swarm - Yellow hive tried to swarm but I shut them down. Thanks Frederick Dunn! The Yellow hive decided to swarm in the middle of dearth which is a suicide mission. My only chance to save the queen was to prevent the swarm. Thanks to a trick taught to us by Frederick Dunn it was possible to stop them. As soon as I saw the bees beginning to swarm I turned on the sprinkler and viola! The bees thought it was raining and canceled their plans. This little trick gave me enough time to get my gear on and do an emergency split. The question is will it work this time of year?

Beekeeping during dearth means feeding the bees. There is always something to do in the bee yard but that doesn't always mean you can do it. During dearth, opening a hive for an inspection can lead to a serious robbing situation in the bee yard. So the work moves into the shop where we build vented feeding shims and some deep supers to cover the feeding buckets. I also give an update to the resource hive, the blue nuc, the new name for the Orange queen, and wrap it up with a special message to you. Thank you for watching this beekeeping during dearth episode. I hope you enjoy.

This video is not one I wanted to release but felt it necessary. I am a new beekeeper and will show my failures as well as successes. This is a huge failure, I mean a HUGE FAIL! I accidentally added two entrance reducers to my Orange hive when I was honey harvesting and effectively sealed my hive. This left the hive to bake in the Georgia sun for seven days with internal hive temperatures running over 111F. This was a terrible mistake which almost cost me the hive. The only thing that saved the hive was the exhaust fans which managed to vent the hive a little even though the screened bottom board was blocked with 2 inches of dead bees. I am feeling bad but feel like I need to show this video. Maybe it will prevent someone from making the same mistake or doing something equally as dumb.

Beekeeper FAIL! This short video is an example of beekeeping gone wrong. This video is an excerpt from my honey harvest video. In this excerpt, I somehow manage to anger the bees and get stung 23 times while running for my life. The bees from the green hive light me up and the pain is immediate. I was fortunate to be stung mostly through my close which prevented the stingers from lodging into my flesh but the bees did manage to get their venom in me so it hurt badly. The bees latched onto my shirt and stuck to me like velcro. It's funny to watch after the fact but getting chased and stung by my own bees was no fun while it was happening. I hope you enjoy the video.

The Green hive seems to have two queens in the same hive. Is that even possible? During the beehive inspection, I find eggs and brood above and below the queen excluder. I didn't even think this was possible but it seems a newly mated queen returned to the hive in the upper entrance and has been accepted by the hive all while the original queen continues to live in the bottom. I think.

Stop the laying worker in the red hive. This is the solution I have settled on to correct the problem with the laying worker bees in the red hive. After considering all of the suggestions from all of the comments this is the solution I felt was right for me, this hive, and my bees. You may choose to solve your laying worker situation differently than I have here and that is OK. We all have to do what we feel is correct in our situation. All situations are different. This is the last thing I wanted to do but honestly, the hive was dying with a population consisting of nearly 60% drones and growing daily as more drones hatched and workers died off. This is my first use of the Maxant 3100p and it was easy to operate, easy to load and unload, and even easy to clean. The Maxant 3100p honey extractor is a great honey extractor and worth the money. The value equals its utility. Also, an update on the Red hive situation.
In this video, I will be doing my first honey extraction using the Maxant 3100p honey extractor. The Maxant extractor should allow me to extract the honey without destroying the comb. This was my last attempt at adding a queen to the red flow hive. All the bees loved her until she laid an egg. After the first egg came the first sting and five minutes later she was on her last legs. Sorry queen. the Red Hive is doomed.

My Flow hive fail. I have a laying worker and a flow hive frame filled with capped drone brood. The Red flow hive is queenless but that doesn't stop them from creating drama in the bee yard. The Red hive has a laying worker that moves freely through the queen excluder and has laid drone brood on every level and on every frame in this hive including the flow hive flow frames. What do I do now? Do I pick the drone brood out of the flow hive frames with tweezers and place the flow frames on another hive or do I wait for 23 days and let them hatch and leave the flow frames? Are drones laid by a laying worker even viable? Will they hatch? I don't know. If you do know, please leave a comment and help me out here.

Checking the status of the splits and preparing the Teal and Pine hives for their moves to the new bee yard up the street. Moving a beehive is a tricky business because they say you have to move it 3 inches or three miles. I am going to move the hive a half-mile and cross my fingers. I will lay tree branches in front of the hives to force the bees to re-orient themselves to their new location. Hopefully, it will work and the bees won't get lost.
If you are considering installing a sustainable or edible landscape or becoming a beekeeper or starting beekeeping as a hobby this is the channel for you. I will show you everything I learned in my first years of beekeeping and you can learn with me as I experience and overcome the challenges I encounter in my second year and beyond. I will also feature some how-to videos because I am perpetually curious and creative and am always building something.
