Bees Need Love Too! -- Drones in February?
I don't know if this is normal or not but I seem to have drones flying around in February. Is this because of the hive heaters? The pollen is coming in and the nectar will be flowing soon. Time to start getting ready for the 2020 bee season.
If you are considering installing a sustainable or edible landscape or becoming a beekeeper or starting beekeeping as a hobby this is the channel for you. I will show you everything I learned in my first year of beekeeping and you can learn with me as I experience and overcome the challenges I encounter in my second year and beyond. I will also feature some how-to videos because I am perpetually curious and creative and am always building something.

Groundhog was WRONG!
The Groundhog was wrong. We are expecting snow tonight and I am buttoning up the heaters. Checking on the bees and closing off the ventilation with corks to retain as much heat in the hives as possible.

Trees For Bees -- Planting a Black Ice plum tree for spring. Working on the sustainable landscape.
More than just the bees. I need to replace a Superior plum tree I planted last year because the deer ate half of it and nearly killed it. I will move it to a place down by the lake where it can still have a chance at survival. Next I unbox and plant a new Black Ice plum tree from FastGrowingTrees.com in hopes to one day have a fruiting plum tree that will ad to my sustainable and edible landscape.
The fruit trees and the other edibles I planted on the property such as black and raspberries, blueberries, apple, cherry, peach, nectarine, plum, and pare trees are one of the reasons I started raising bees to begin with. I needed pollinators to make everything work. I didn't realize how addictive raising bees was and now it is my primary hobby. I hope you enjoy this video and see part of what it takes to continue creating my edible and sustainable landscape.

Raining Inside the Hive -- I failed to remove the corks while feeding sugar syrup. Yikes!
Oh no! It is raining inside the hive. I failed to remove the corks from the control box while feeding sugar syrup. The bees were dehydrating the syrup but I left no where for the water to go. If you are going to use the heater boxes and need to feed syrup in the winter you may want to use a Vivaldi board to provide ventilation or at the very least open up all of the ventilation holes. I made a mistake and fed the bees and closed all of the vent holes. Its raining in the hives. Good news is I have opened the vent holes and the problem was resolved within the hour. Now, the bees are warm and dry. Close call. Ventilation is king with bees in the winter.

Hive Inspection - January 12, 2020 -- First hive inspection of the new year and hive heater update.
The first beehive inspection of 2020. Who knew it would be in the middle of January. It is an unusual 65F today and the bees are all doing well. All hives have ample stores and the bees are bringing in pollen from somewhere?? Maybe it is some mid winter dandelion. The hive heaters are working surprisingly well and will be put to the test in the upcoming weeks as the cold front rolls in this week and is promising 20F temps. All four colonies are packed with young bees and the queens are laying up a storm. On average there are five full frames of capped brood in each box and even some capped drone cells. Please don't swarm in January bees.

Beehive Heater Check -- January cold weather returns and the bees are still warm as bugs in a rug.
Quick Beehive heater check. January cold weather returns but the bees are warm.
I realized after I made this video I left all of the ventilation open on the hives which was causing the heater to work really hard to keep the temp up. I have since closed off all but one of the ventilation holes in each one of the hives and the hives are now within one degree of their set point of 64 degrees.

No More Leaking Roof -- New flat top roof for the hives. Roof upgrade for the bees!
Replacing the leaking roof and the other gable roofs with flat-top tin roofs that will not leak on the bees. After the leaking roof shorted out my beehive heater controller and soaked my bees I decided I would let the bees start the new year with brand new tin flat-top roofs to keep the bees dry. No longer will my beehive roof leak. Although the flow hive gable roof is pleasing to look at it leaks it doesn't serve my purpose and cannot be used on the beehive. The bees work themselves to death all summer long the least I have do is provide them with a warm and dry place to winter so they can come out strong in the spring and gather a record volume of nectar.
The reward is when you get to harvest your flow hive and get the honey on tap that flow hive advertises.

Christmas Pollen Patties for the Bees - winter feeding colored pollen patties for the bees Christmas
Christmas pollen patties for the bees. Red and green to celebrate the season. Winter beehive feeding. Pollen patties made from pollen substitute and placed in the hive in December. December beekeeping is usually tricky and I hope this doesn't cause a population explosion in December. My bees love a good pollen patty, even in December. Winter beehive feeding is tough enough and I've always heard one shouldn't use pollen patties in the winter because it will cause the queen to start laying. Well, I used them and the queens are all laying. Last warm day in January I checked the hives and the bees had five full frames of brood each.
Normally, a brood explosion in January would be a bad thing, but these bees live in a climate-controlled hive that is kept warm by internal beehive heaters. This allows me to continue to raise brood and boost my population for spring.
If you are interested in building internal beehive heaters you can follow my four-part step-by-step video series in my upload stream. You can also find it in the Things I Build playlist on this channel.

Winter Hive Maintenance - Removing feeding buckets and battling #ants in December. Opening the #beehives in mid-December to remove #feeding buckets and top boxes. #Ants are still a problem on beehive three. I am looking for a new approach to fight ants in the winter.

All hives have ample stores and the bees are bringing in pollen from somewhere?? Maybe it is some mid-winter dandelion.
Have you ever wondered how to start beekeeping, or setting up a beehive or making sugar syrup or pollen patties to feed your bees? Starting a beehive or starting beekeeping is easier than you think. Beginning beekeeping is a fun and interesting hobby which will provide a needed service to the community by pollinating flowers and gardens as well as provide excess honey to your friends and family. So if you are a beginning beekeeper I will share what I have learned, I just started beekeeping myself.
To get started beekeeping you need to get a starter beehive from a beekeeping supplier or online beekeeping resources. You can install a package of bees into a new beehive or you can install a NUC or nuc which is a nucleus beehive which contains more than just the three pounds of bees you get with a bee package . Get a small nuc hive to install which contains upward of five frames of bees that have already become accustomed to their queen. When installing a package of bees you will have to spend some time introducing your queen into the hive and hope that the bees don't reject your queen. Installing a nuc is the easiest way to start beekeeping or to start a new beehive especially if you are new to beekeeping and have never been around bees before.
The nuc installation is pretty straight forward and easy to do. When installing the nuc all you have to do is remove the frames from the nuc and install them directly to your beehive. I started beekeeping by installing a nuc into my hive after buying a flow hive the season before. After I bought the flowhive I spent several weeks building the flowhive. After building the flow hive I waxed the flow frames even though they say you don't have to wax your flow frames I found the bees liked the flow frames after I waxed them and the bees took to the waxed frames more readily than I think the bees would have taken to the flow frames if I had not waxed the flow frames prior to installing the flow frames into my flow hive and copy of the flow hive I built.
After installing your bees into the flow hive from the nuc or installing your bees into the flow hive from your package of bees you will need to feed the bees. You can feed your bees with sugar syrup in either a one-to-one (1 to 1 syrup) mixture or a two-to-one (2 to 1 syrup) mixture. The bees will need to be fed for the first couple of weeks while the bees collect their own nectar. Feeding bees usually happens in the spring and the fall but you can feed your bees all year round if you feel you need to feed your bees that often. Your bees will gladly accept a one-to-one or two-to-one 1:1 mixture or 2:1 mixture of sugar syrup. If you are using a flow hive or a standard Langstroth hive you will still need to feed your bees after installing the bees from a nuc or a package of bees. The bees just need a helping hand to get started.
You will also need to check you bees for parasites and diseases which can cause your beehive colony to collapse. Colony collapse has been happening for years which is another reason I started beekeeping. I started beekeeping to pollinate my garden and to get honey but colony collapse was in the news constantly and I decided I would do my part to not just start colony collapse but I would add to the bee population so the colony collapse disorder wouldn't wipe out honeybees and pollination as we know it.
Honeybees have been an important part of our ecosystem for millions of years and have been pollinating our crops and fruit trees forever. So if you are a gardener or just someone beginning beekeeping I think this channel will give you some helpful information and well as let you avoid the mistakes I made after starting beekeeping. Varroa mites are also a big concern to beekeepers and I will show you how to treat for varroa when it is necessary because varroa mites can also cause your colony to collapse and cause you to lose all of your bees over-winter.

Quick Hive Temperature Check -- Is the beehive heater working and do the bees like the warm temp?
Quick Hive Temperature Check -- Is the beehive heater working and do the bees like the warm temp? Checking to see if the internal beehive heaters are doing their job on an ice cold night in Georgia. All four beehives are outfitted with hive heaters to keep the bees warm over the winter. Two standard hives and two flow hives both a flow hive and a flow hive 2 each have custom beehive heaters installed. The hive heaters have been installed for three weeks and they are working well so far and are keeping the beehive temp within a set range. The bees are walking around the hives and are not clustering on a 24 F degree night.

Find The Queen - Complete hive inspection of all four hives and a fresh bucket of syrup for each.
Find The Queen - Complete hive inspection of all four hives and a fresh bucket of syrup for each. Winter beehive preparation. Checking stores, reducing entrances, feeding the bees, and finding the queens. Full late fall hive inspection of all hives. While looking for the queen I noticed several of the hives being more aggressive than usual and the VSH queen is being very aggressive. The VSH queen was bought from California and I am wondering if she may have some Africanized genetics in her. The bees behave like the bees in videos I have seen where the bees have been Africanized and they have many more guard bees who attack on a whim. either way, the hives are aggressive this time of year and they don't care that I am feeding them sugar syrup all they know is that I am a foreigner to their hive so I must be trying to rob them.

Beehive Heater Update -- The Internal beehive heaters are working. All bees are warm on a cold night
Beehive Heater Update -- The Internal beehive heaters are working. All bees are warm on a cold night. Early morning check of the beehives with outdoor temperature between 28-30F. The air is cold, I am cold, but the bees are warm. I have installed a home made internal beehive heater that keeps the beehive temperature within a set range. The bees are warm and not clustering on the inside and they are raising full frames of brood in the late fall early winter.

If you are interested in building your own internal beehive heaters I have created a four part how-to video series to show you exactly step-by-step how I build them. You can find the videos in the Things I Build playlist on this channel or in order in the upload stream.
So.. If you are considering becoming a beekeeper or starting beekeeper as a hobby this is the channel for you. I will show you everything I learned in my first year of beekeeping and you can learn with me as I experience and overcome challenges I encounter in my second year and beyond. I will also feature some how-to videos because I am perpetually curious and creative and am always building something.
Thank you for visiting my channel and I really hope you like, subscribe, and ring the bell.

Cold Weather Beehive Feeding - Topping off the hive with syrup before winter and fixing hive heater.
Cold weather beehive feeding -- Topping off the hives with sugar syrup before winter and fixing hive heater. Natural nectar and pollen are almost gone. Topping off the hives with heavy sugar syrup to sustain the bees through the winter. Also, fixing the heating element in one of the winter boxes. Fall is here and the the outside temperature is dropping fast but the bees are tucked away in their 65 degree hives sipping honey-coladas.
Outside of the one malfunction the internal beehive heaters are working perfectly and keeping the beehives within a set temperature range. The internal heaters are working as expected. Not only do the beehive heaters keep the bees warm but they also keep the internal bucket feeder filled with sugar syrup at a constant temp to allow the feeding of sugar syrup well into the col season. The internal temp of the beehive is also warm enough for the bees to successfully evaporate the sugar syrup for capping.
If you are interested in building your own hive heaters I have created a 4 part how-to video series showing you exactly how I build my hive heaters and how to control them. You can find the videos in my upload stream or in the Things I build playlist on this channel.

Getting the Flow Hives and the Standard Hives ready for Winter: Adding and testing my hive heaters.
Getting the Flowhive and the standard hives ready for winter. Adding and testing my hive heaters. Time to get the hives ready for winter by adding the internal beehive heaters (winter boxes) and removing the flow frames from each of the two flow hives. I also remove any excess honey frames and replace them with sugar frames and gallon bucket feeders. Fall is here and it is time to feed, feed, feed the bees 2:1 sugar syrup and pollen if they need it. I will also check the beetle traps.
If you want to see how I build my beehive heaters and how to install the beehive heaters I have created a four part series which can be found in my upload stream or in the Things I Build playlist.
Either way, this is how I get my bees ready for winter. Because I have hive heaters I have no need to wrap the hives.
All of that being said, this is my first winter with the bees and the first full season with the hive heaters so anything can happen.

Beehive Feeding: Comparing Sugar Syrup, Honey, and sugar with anise. Feeding and robbing.
Beehive Feeding. Comparing sugar syrup, honey, and sugar with anise. What do the bees prefer to eat over the winter? I compare sugar syrup with and without anise extract added with honey. Is it possible the anise extract is causing my beehives to rob each other or is it just a coincidence? Feeding bees sugar syrup either 1:1 ratio or 2:1 ration or just mix it by eyeballing it like I do, the bees will feed on sugar syrup to prepare for winter or to begin the brood build out just before the spring flow. I feed my bees as much sugar syrup as they will take.
This food works for both standard hives or the flow hive one and the flow hive two. I have concluded the bees do prefer sugar syrup with essential oils like anise added over sugar syrup without anise. Of course given their choice bees will always choose to store the real nectar and eat the real honey they produce over sugar syrup for feeding the bees any time of year.
Also, does feeding sugar syrup with anise oil lead to robbing? Does anise make the bees more active and defensive? Whether feeding wild bees or your entire beehive this video will test to discover what the bees like best.
