A 2x6x8 board can be purchased for about $8.00 from any building supply store and turned into this nice hive stand in about 30 minutes with nothing more than a saw, some glue, and a couple of screws. This is a quick project that can be completed in 30 minutes and save a bunch of money. This stand is modeled after the stand sold by Better Bee which costs 57.00 plus shipping. Is that even possible? During the beehive inspection, I find eggs and brood above and below the queen excluder. I didn't even think this was possible but it seems a newly mated queen returned to the hive in the upper entrance and has been accepted by the hive all while the original queen continues to live in the bottom. This is the solution I have settled on to correct the problem with the laying worker bees in the red hive. After considering all of the suggestions from all of the comments this is the solution I felt was right for me, this hive, and my bees. You may choose to solve your laying worker situation differently than I have here and that is OK. We all have to do what we feel is correct in our situation. All situations are different. This is the last thing I wanted to do but honestly, the hive was dying with a population consisting of nearly 60% drones and growing daily as more drones hatched and workers died off. I have a laying worker and a flow hive frame filled with capped drone brood. The Red flow hive is queenless but that doesn't stop them from creating drama in the bee yard. The Red hive has a laying worker that moves freely through the queen excluder and has laid drone brood on every level and on every frame in this hive including the flow hive flow frames. What do I do now? Do I pick the drone brood out of the flow hive frames with tweezers and place the flow frames on another hive or do I wait for 23 days and let them hatch and leave the flow frames? Are drones laid by a laying worker even viable? Will they hatch? I don't know. If you do know, please leave a comment and help me out here. Moving a beehive is a tricky business because they say you have to move it 3 inches or three miles. I am going to move the hive a half-mile and cross my fingers. I will lay tree branches in front of the hives to force the bees to re-orient themselves to their new location. Hopefully, it will work and the bees won't get lost. Ok, so we split the yellow hive two weeks ago and started the orange hive again. Then we found the orange queen and accidentally painted her white. Well, now it's time to split the hive again. There are so many bees in this hive they cannot get into the hive through the landing board. The problem is, now I can't find the white queen. They cleaned off her paint. Arrrg! The Red Flowhive has been an evil hive since the beginning of the season. The bees are the spawn of an"Italian" VSH Queen from California but I think she may have a little Africanized bee in her. This is the secret 10 frame hive project I have been teasing for the past few months. During this unexpected time off I managed to get into the shop and complete the build. The Blue hive has decided to split and creates a massive swarm in the tree and over the house. The sound is audible from the ground. It is certainly a sight to see but losing this many bees because of my own errors when inspecting the blue hive is depressing. The nectar flow has started in Georgia and I am removing the hive heaters and installing the honey supers on the hives. The flow hives are primed with wax and installed on the hives.
