Dandelion - Rolling Stones, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Dandelion (Rolling Stones, The, 1967). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-12-02. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Dandelion," written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, was the Rolling Stones' 14th top 40 hit rising to the no. 14 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967 (Whitburn, 2013). The lyrics are derived from from various nursery rhymes (songfacts, 2022). The song was originally released as the "B" side to "We Love You" in the UK; however, "Dandelion" became the "A" side in America where it overtook "We Love You" on the charts (R. Unterberger, allmusic, 2022). John Lennon and Paul McCartney provided background vocals and Nicki Hopkins played harpsichord on the track (P. Margotin & J. Guesdon, 2016). "Richards named his first daughter after the song – although she decided to go by her middle name, Angela, instead" (rollingstone, 2013).

Lyrics:
Prince or pauper, beggar man or thing
Play the game with ev'ry flower you bring
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion
One o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock, four o'clock chimes
Dandelions don't care about the time
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion, blow away dandelion
Tho' you're older now its just the same
You can play this dandelion game
When you're finished with your childlike prayers
Well, you know you should wear it
Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailors lives
Rich man, poor man, beautiful, daughters wives
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion, blow away dandelion
Little girls, and boys come out to play
Bring your dandelions to blow away
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion, blow away dandelion

Lyrics:
I just can't help believing
When she smiles up soft and gentle
With a trace of misty morning
And the promise of tomorrow in her eyes
I just can't help believing
When she's lying close beside me
And my heart beats with the rhythm of her sighs
This time the girl is gonna stay
This time the girl is gonna stay
For more than just a day
Oh, I just can't help believing
When she slips her hand in my hand
And it feels so small and helpless
As my fingers fold around it like a glove
I just can't help believing
When she's whispering her magic
And her tears are shining honey sweet with love
This time the girl is gonna stay
This time the girl is gonna stay
For more than just a day
For more than just a day

Laugh, Laugh - Beau Brummels, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Laugh, Laugh (Beau Brummels, The, 1964). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-11-28. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Laugh, Laugh," written by guitarist Ron Elliott, was the Beau Brummels' first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1964 and rose to the #15 position in 1965 (Whitburn, 2013). The recording was produced by Sylvester Stewart (aka "Sly Stone") (Last, 2011). The Beau Brummels, a San Francisco based band, is "acknowledged by some as the first true folk-rock group, predating the Byrds. They are credited as the first American band to successfully integrate the British sound. They anticipated the psychedelic themes that would characterize the San Francisco sound" (S. Salter, encyclopedia, 2022).

Lyrics:
I hate to say it, but I told you so
Don't mind my preachin' to you
I said, don't trust 'em, baby, now you know
You don't learn every thing there is to know in school
Wouldn't believe me when I gave advice
I said that he was a tease
If you want help you better ask me now
So be sincere, convince me with a pretty please
Laugh, laugh, I thought I'd die
It seemed so funny to me
Laugh, laugh you met a guy
Who taught you how it feels to be
Lonely
Oh-so lonely
Don't think I'm being funny when I say
You got just what you deserve
I can't help feeling you found out today
You thought you were too good, you got a lot of nerve
Won't say I'm sorry for the things I said
I'm glad he packed up to go
You kept on bragging he was yours instead
Found you don't know every thing there is to know
Laugh, laugh, I thought I'd die
It seemed so funny to me
Laugh, laugh you met a guy
Who taught you how it feels to be
Lonely
Oh-so lonely
Before I go, I got to say one thing
Don't close your ears to me
Take my advice and you'll find out that being
Just another girl won't cause you misery
Don't say you can't get any boy to call
Don't be so smug or else
You'll find you can't get any boy at all
You'll wind up an old lady sitting on the shelf
Laugh, laugh, I thought I'd die
It seemed so funny to me
Laugh, laugh you met a guy
Who taught you how it feels to be
Lonely
Oh-so lonely
Lonely
Oh-so lonely

Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell / Judy Collins (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Both Sides Now (Joni Mitchell, 1969; Judy Collins, 1968). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-11-26. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Both Sides Now," written by Joni Mitchell, was Judy Collins' first and only top 10 hit landing at the no. 8 position in 1968 (Whitburn, 2013). According to Mitchell: "I was reading Saul Bellow's Henderson the Rain King on a plane and early in the book Henderson the Rain King is also up in a plane. He's on his way to Africa and he looks down and sees these clouds. I put down the book, looked out the window and saw clouds too, and I immediately started writing the song. I had no idea that the song would become as popular as it did" (songfacts, 2022). At the 11th Annual Grammy Awards, Judy Collins won the 1968 Grammy for Best Folk Performance for her version of the song (grammy, 2022).

Lyrics:
Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun they rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done, but clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real, I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show, you leave 'em laughin' when you go
And if you care don't let them know, don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say, "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way
But now old friends are acting strange they shake their heads, they say
I've changed
But something's lost but something's gained in living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

It Ain't Me Babe - Bob Dylan / Turtles, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
It Ain't Me Babe (Bob Dylan, 1964; Turtles, The, 1965). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-11-15. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"It Ain't Me Babe," written by Bob Dylan, was the Turtles' debut single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart rising to the no. 8 position in 1965, while Johnny Cash and June Carter's version stalled at the no. 58 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart a year earlier (Whitburn, 2013). Songfests (2022) noted that legend has it that the line "'"Go away from my window...' is a shout-out to fellow folk-singer John Jacob Niles' song "Go 'Way From My Window' - Dylan cited Niles as an early influence" additionally, the phrase "no, no, no, it ain't me babe" is a response to the Beatles' song "She Love You;" "She loves you yeah, yeah, yeah; also the refrain "no, no, no, it ain't me babe" is a call-back to the Beatles' "she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah," as heard in their song "She Loves You" (songfacts, 2022). Biographers have claimed that the song was written about Dylan's relationship with then girlfriend, Suze Rotolo (L. Holden, grunge, Jan. 10, 2022).

Lyrics:
Go away from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who's never weak but always strong
To protect you and defend you
Whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door
But it ain't me, babe
A-no, no, no it ain't me, babe
Well, it ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
Go lightly from the ledge, babe
Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'll only lead you down
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who'll promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes to you
Someone to close his heart
Someone who will die for you and more
But it ain't me, babe
A-no, no, no it ain't me, babe
Well, it ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
No it ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
I said a-no, no, no, it ain't me, babe

You really should accept
This time he's gone for good
He'll never come back now
Even though he said he would
So, darling, dry your eyes
So many other guys
Would give the world I'm sure
To wear the shoes he wore
Oh, come on
Smile a little smile for me, Rosemarie
What's the use in cryin'?
In a little while you'll see, Rosemarie
You must keep on tryin'
I know that he hurt you bad
I know, darling, don't be sad and
Smile a little smile for me, Rosemarie, Rosemarie
I guess you're lonely now
Love's comin' to an end
But, darling, only now
Are you free to start again
Lift up your pretty chin
Don't let those tears begin
You're a big girl now
And you'll pull through somehow
Oh, come on
Smile a little smile for me, Rosemarie
What's the use in cryin'?
In a little while you'll see, Rosemarie
You must keep on tryin'
I know that he hurt you bad
I know, darling, don't be sad and

Have I Told You Lately - Van Morrison / Rod Stewart (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Have I Told You Lately (Van Morrison, 1989; Rod Stewart, 1993). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-10-21. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Have I Told You Lately," written by Van Morrison, was Rod Stewart's 30th top 40 hit in the USA hitting the no. 5 position in 1993 (Whitburn, 2013). Although not directly confirmed by Morrison himself, it has been argued that the song reflects Morrison's spiritual relationship with God; he does acknowledge that many of his songs have a spiritual aspect to them (songfacts, 2022). Morrison's recorded version of the song did hit Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart in 1989 landing at no. 12 (musicbrainz, 2022).

Lyrics:
Have I told you lately that I love you?
Have I told you there's no one else above you?
Fill my heart with gladness, take away all my sadness
Ease my troubles, that's what you do
For the morning sun in all it's glory
Meets the day with hope and comfort too
You fill my life with laughter, somehow you make it better
Ease my troubles, that's what you do
There's a love less defined
And its yours and its mine
Like the sun
And at the end of the day
We should give thanks and pray
To the one, to the one
Have I told you lately that I love you?
Have I told you there's no one else above you?
Fill my heart with gladness, take away all my sadness
Ease my troubles, that's what you do
There's a love less defined

You Got What It Takes - Marv Johnson / Dave Clark Five, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
You Got What It Takes (Bobby Parker, 1958; Mark Johnson, 1959; Dave Clark Five, The, 1967). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-10-16. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"You Got What It Takes," written by Tyran Carlo Davis, Gwen Fuqua Gordy and Berry Gordy Jr., was Marv Johnson's 2nd top 40 hit rising to the no. 10 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959, while the Dave Clark Five's version was their last top 10 hit landing at the no. 7 position in 1967 (disc dog, 2022; Whitburn, 2013). There is a bit of a controversy about who actually wrote the song, although Tyran Carlo Davis, Gwen Fuqua Gordy and Berry Gordy Jr are listed as the writers of the song on the original Marv Johnson release (1958), the Dave Clark Five's version (1967) and Showaddywaddy's version (1977) and others, Bobby Parker's original recording of the song, one year earlier in 1958 on Vee-Jay Records (VJ 279), lists Bobby Parker as the writer of the song (archive, 2022; discogs, 2022; globaldogproductions, 2022). In fact, in an interview with Forgotten Hits, Parker said: "I wrote 'You've Got What It Takes,' that was MY song. . . . Berry Gordy just stole it out from under me, just put his name on it. And what could I do? I was just trying to make a living, playing guitar and singing, how was I going to go on and fight Berry Gordy, big as he was, and Motown Records? There wasn't really nothing I could do about it - it was just too big and I didn't have any way to fight them" (songfests, 2022).

Ow! You don't drive a big fat car, no
You don't look a-like a movie star
And on your money we won't get far
But baby, you got what it takes, Oh! to satisfy
You got what it takes to set my soul on fire
But oh, oh, whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh-oh yeah
You got what it takes for me
Ow! You don't live in a beautiful place
And you don't dress in the best of taste
Oh! Nature didn't give you such a beautiful face
But baby, you got what it takes, Oh! to satisfy
You got what it takes to set my soul on fire
But oh, oh, whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh-oh yeah
You got what it takes for me
Now when you're near me, ooo-wee
My head goes around and around
And when you kiss me, a-little girl
My love comes tumblin' down, you send me
You don't live in a beautiful place
Oh, you don't dress in the best of taste
And nature didn't give you such a beautiful face
But baby, you got what it takes, Oh! to satisfy

Listen people to what I say
I say everybody's got to have their day
And don't you know that
Everybody's got to love somebody sometime
Everybody's got to win a heart
Everybody's got to love somebody sometime
When you do, I hope you never part
I once found love, found love just like you
But then he came, he might come to you
And don't you know that
Everybody's got to lose somebody sometime
But everybody can part
Everybody's got to lose somebody sometime
So take care that you don't lose your heart
Take my advice and you'll always find
You'll be happy all of the time
Take my advice and you will see
You'll be happy as you can be
Listen people to what I say
I say everybody's got to have their day
And don't you know that

Good Riddance (Time of your life) - Green Day (cover-live by Bill Shar
Good Riddance (Time of your life) (Green Day, 1997). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-10-09 "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Good Riddance (Time of your life)," written by Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Pritchard and Frank Wright, was Green Day's 7th top 40 hit landing on the no. 11 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1997 and stayed on the chart for 43 weeks (Whitburn, 2013). "Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song when his girlfriend moved to Ecuador to live with her family and continue her schooling. He tried to be levelheaded about it, but to show his anger, he named the song "Good Riddance" and made "Time Of Your Life" the subtitle" (songfacts, 2022). "The line 'tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial' relates to a tattoo Billie Joe Armstrong had of the girl he wrote the song about . . . . When she moved away, he had it covered up" (songfacts, 2022).

Lyrics:
Another turning point
A fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist
Directs you where to go
So make the best of this test
And don't ask why
It's not a question,
But a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable,
But in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
So take the photographs
And still-frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf
And good health and good time
Tattoo's of memories
And dead skin on trial, go
For what it's worth
It was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable,
But in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable,
But in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable,
But in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life

Truckin' - Grateful Dead, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Truckin' (Grateful Dead, The, 1971). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2021-11-11. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Truckin'" was the Grateful Dead's second entree onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart hitting the #64 position in 1971 (Whitburn, 2013). The song was a group project with Garcia, Weir, and Lesh providing the music, while Hunter provided the lyrics (D. Dodd, dead.net, Oct. 24, 2013). The song closed out the "American Beauty" album, which was released the previous year (Whitburn, 2009). The album cut was quite a bit longer than the single version performed here with a number of additional verses clocking in at 5:05 (allmusic.com, 2021; deaddisc.com, 2021). Truckin'" is an autobiographical picture painted by the band about their touring experiences (songfacts.com, 2021). “'Truckin’' was first performed on August 18, 1970, at the Fillmore West. The show opened with an acoustic set, and 'Truckin’" was their opening song (D. Dodd, dead.net, Oct. 24, 2013).

Lyrics:
Truckin', got my chips cashed in
Keep truckin', like the do-dah man
Together, more or less in line
Just keep truckin' on
Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings
Dallas, got a soft machine
Houston, too close to New Orleans
New York got the ways and means
But just won't let you be
What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Livin' on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine
All a friend can say is, "Ain't it a shame?"
Truckin', up to Buffalo
Been thinkin', you got to mellow slow
It takes time, you pick a place to go
And just keep truckin' on
You're sick of hangin' around and you'd like to travel
Get tired of travelin', you want to settle down
I guess they can't revoke your soul for tryin'
Get out of the door and light out and look all around
Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me
Other times, I can barely see
Lately, it occurs to me
What a long, strange trip it's been
Truckin', I'm a goin' home
Whoa, whoa, baby, back where I belong
Back home, sit down and patch my bones
And get back truckin' on

I'll Be There For You - Rembrandts, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
I'll Be There For You (Rembrandts, The, 1995). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Puka's Bar Courtyard, Kahala, HI. 2022-09-21. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"I'll Be There For You," written by David Crane, Marta Kauffman, Michael Skloff, Phil Solem, Dany Wilde and Allee Willes, was the Rembrandts' second top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart landing at the no. 17 position and hit the no. 1 position on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart in 1995 as well as no. 1 in Canada and no. 3 in the UK; it was also the theme song for the hit TV comedy series "Friend" (officialcharts, 2022; rhino, 2022; Whitburn, 2013). According to Allee Willis (one of the song writers), "It was never, ever to this day released as a single. It was just DJs who made a cassette of the song and just started playing it. And it became the #1 airplay record of the year" (songfacts.com, 2020).

Lyrics:
So no one told you life was gonna be this way
Your job's a joke, you're broke
Your love life's D.O.A
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month
Or even your year, but
I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)
You're still in bed at ten
And work began at eight
You've burned your breakfast, so far
Things are going great
Your mother warned you there'd be days like these
But she didn't tell you when the world has brought
You down to your knees and
I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)
No one could ever know me
No one could ever see me
Seems you're the only one who knows
What it's like to be me
Someone to face the day with
Make it through all the rest with
Someone I'll always laugh with
Even at my worst, I'm best with you, yeah
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month
Or even your year
I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)
I'll be there for you
I'll be there for you
I'll be there for you

Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite - Spaniels, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite - (Spaniels, The, 1954). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Puka's Bar Courtyard, Kahala, HI. 2022-10-05. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite," written by Calvin Carter and James Hudson, was the Spaniels' only top 40 hit rising to no. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1954 and no. 5 on the Billboard R&B chart (allmusic, 2022; Whitburn, 1986, 2013). Jame "Pookie" Hudson was the lead singer for the group and was the first artist to sign to the Vee-Jay record label (wbssmedia, 2022). The Spaniels were a doo-wop group hailing from Gary, IN (allmusic, 2022). Other notable versions of the song that charted include: The McGuire sisters (no. 7, 1954) and Sunny Fall (no. 26, 1954) (Whitburn, 1986). The TV series "Sha Na Na," featuring the group of the same name, used the song to end each of their episodes (1977-1980) (imdb, 2022). I use the song as well to end each of my live performances.

Lyrics:
Goodnite, sweetheart, well it's time to go,
Goodnite, sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you, but I really must say,
Goodnite, sweetheart, goodnite.
Goodnite, sweetheart, well it's time to go,
Goodnite, sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you, but I really must say,
Goodnite, sweetheart, goodnite.
Well, it's three o'clock in the morning
Baby, I just can't treat you right,
Well, I hate to leave you, babe,
Don't mean maybe, because I love you so.
Goodnite, sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you, but I really must say,
Goodnite, sweetheart, goodnight.
Goodnite, sweetheart, well it's time to go,
Goodnite, sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you, but I really must say,
Goodnite, sweetheart, goodnite.
Now, my mother and my father,
Might hear if I stay here too long,
One kiss and we'll part,
And I'll be going,
You know I hate to see you go.
Goodnite, sweetheart, well it's time to go,
Goodnite, sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you, but I really must say,
Goodnite, sweetheart, goodnite.

Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets To The Wind In Copenhagen) (Tom Waits, 1976). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-10-03. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets To The Wind In Copenhagen)," written by Tom Waits, was released in 1976 and was the first track on his third album "Small Change" (Whitburn, 2006). According to Waits, Tom Traubert "was a friend of a friend of mine... who lived in Denver, and died in jail. He's a real guy. So, . . . it's about going on the loose, being on the road, chasing your dream" (songfacts, 2022). Waits wrote this song after visiting skid row in Los Angeles, drinking a pint of rye whiskey and throwing up (songfacts, 2022).

Lyrics:
Wasted and wounded, it ain't what the moon did
I got what I paid for now
See ya tomorrow, hey Frank can I borrow
A couple of bucks from you
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, you'll go waltzing Matilda with me
I'm an innocent victim of a blinded alley
And I'm tired of all these soldiers here
No one speaks English, and everything's broken
And my Stacys are soaking wet
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, you'll go waltzing Matilda with me
Now the dogs are barking
And the taxicabs parking
A lot they can do for me
I begged you to stab me
You tore my shirt open
And I'm down on my knees tonight
Old Bushmills I staggered
You buried the dagger in
Your silhouette window light
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, you'll go waltzing Matilda with me
Now I've lost my St. Christopher
Now that I've kissed her and the
And the one-armed bandit knows
And the maverick Chinaman, and the cold-blooded signs
And the girls down by the strip tease shows go
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, you'll go waltzing Matilda with me
No, I don't want your sympathy
The fugitives say that the streets aren't for dreaming now
Manslaughter dragnets and the ghosts that sell memories
They want a piece of the action anyhow
Go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, you'll go waltzing Matilda with me
And you can ask any sailor
And the keys from the jailer
And the old men in wheelchairs know
That Matilda's the defendant, she killed about a hundred
And she follows wherever you may go
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, you'll go waltzing Matilda with me
And it's a battered old suitcase
To a hotel someplace
And a wound that will never heal
No prima donna, the perfume is on
An old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey
And goodnight to the street sweepers
The night watchman flame keepers
And goodnight Matilda, too

Morning Has Broken - Cat Stevens (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Morning Has Broken (Cat Stevens, 1971). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-09-20. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Morning Has Broken," lyrics written by Eleanor Farjeon in 1931, while Cat Stevens and Rick Wakeman provided the musical arrangements, was Steven's highest charting single, along with "Another Saturday Night," both hitting the no 6 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1972 and 1974 respectively (E. Hogan, Allmusic, 2022; Whitburn, 2013). According to Stevens, "I accidentally fell upon the song when I was going through a slightly dry period and I needed another song or two for Teaser And The Firecat. I came across this hymn book, found this one song, and thought, this is good. I put the chords to it and then it started becoming associated with me" (dianaleaghmatthews, 2017). As a studio musician, in his pre-Yes days, Rick Wakeman was asked to help arrange the piano parts for the song and performed on the recording (songfacts, 2022).

Lyrics:
Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the world
Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass
Mine is the sunlight
Mine is the morning
Born of the one light Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise ev'ry morning
God's recreation of the new day
Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the world

Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Incense and Peppermints (Strawberry Alarm Clock, 1967). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 202209-16. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"ey
"Incense and Peppermints," written by John Carter and Tim Gilbert (uncredited: Mark Weitz, Ed King), was Strawberry Alarm Clock's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart and their only top 10 hit; it rose to the top position in 1967 (songfacts, 2022; Whitburn, 2013). Interesting that the lead vocalist was not even in the band, a 16 year old Greg Munford, who was visiting the studio at the time was asked to provide the lead vocal (s. Childed, musictales.club, Dec. 20, 2020). Keyboardist Mark Weitz told songfacts (2022) how the song was written. "I came up with the idea and actual music to the [song] . . . I wrote the intro . . . , the verses, and the ending . . . while Ed King . . . co-wrote the bridge . . . and of course the lead guitar parts. . . . Our producer Frank Slay decided to send the fully mixed music track . . . to John Carter; a member of the band The Rainy Daze, who Slay also produced at the time. John Carter was solely responsible for conjuring up the lyrics and the controversial melody line extracted out of the finished musical track. Frank Slay ultimately credited that melody line solely to the writing team of John Carter and Tim Gilbert. To this day, they have received 100% of the royalties." Weitz and King were not credited with writing any of the part of the song and hence did not receive writer royalties; Weitz considered suing for writing credit but decided to not pursue the lawsuit due to the cost (songfacts, 2022).

Lyrics:
Good sense, innocence, cripplin' mankind
Dead kings, many things I can't define
Occasions, persuasions clutter your mind
Incense and peppermints, the color of time
Who cares what games we choose?
Little to win but nothin' to lose
Incense and peppermints, meaningless nouns
Turn on, tune in, turn your eyes around
Look at yourself, look at yourself, yeah, yeah
Look at yourself, look at yourself, yeah, yeah, yeah!
To divide this cockeyed world in two
Throw your pride to one side, it's the least you can do
Beatniks and politics, nothing is new
A yardstick for lunatics, one point of view
Who cares what games we choose?
Little to win but nothin' to lose
Good sense, innocence, cripplin' mankind
Dead kings, many things I can't define
Occasions, persuasions clutter your mind
Incense and peppermints, the color of time
Who cares what games we choose?
Little to win but nothin' to lose
Incense and peppermints
Incense and peppermints

Itchycoo Park - Small Faces (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Itchycoo Park (Small Faces, 1967). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-09-12. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Itchycoo Park ," written by Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott, was Small Faces' first entry and highest entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart rising to no. 16 in 1967 (Whitburn, 2013) and no. 3 on the UK Singles Chart (Lyrics, 1999). According to songfacts (2022), "'Itchycoo Park' is the nickname of Little Ilford Park in London. An 'Itchycoo' is slang for a flower found in the park called a 'Stinging Nettle,' which can burn the skin if touched." When the song was released it was initially banded by the BBC for the drug references, "What did you do there? - I got high" and "I feel inclined to blow my mind" (songfacts, 2022). However, "The group insisted the 'we’ll get high' references were perfectly innocent, and simply about playing truant from school (P. Sexton, udiscovermusic, Aug. 9, 2022). The song was one of the first to use phase-shifting to alter the sound of the recording. "Two synchronised tape copies of a finished recording were played simultaneously into a third master recorder, and by manually retarding the rotation of one of the two tape reels by pressing on the flanges, a skilled engineer could subtly manipulate the phase difference between the two sources, creating the lush 'swooshing' phase effect that sweeps up and down the frequency range (wikipedia, 2022).

Lyrics:
Over Bridge of Sighs
To rest my eyes in shades of green
Under dreaming spires
To Itchycoo Park. That's where I've been.
(What did you do there?)
I got high...
(What did you feel there?)
Well, I cried...
(But why the tears then?)
Tell you why...
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
I feel inclined to blow my mind,
Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun.
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun.
I'll tell you what I'll do.
I'd like to go there now with you,
You can miss out school.
Why go to learn the words of fools?
(What did you do there?)
I got high...
(What did you feel there?)
Well, I cried...
(But why the tears then?)
Tell you why...
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful

Lips like strawberry wine

You're beautiful and you're mine
You're all ribbons and curls
Oh, what a girl!
Eyes that twinkle and shine
You're sixteen
You're beautiful and you're mine
You're my baby, you're my pet
We fell in love on the night we met
You touched my hand, my heart went "pop"
And ooh, when we kissed we could not stop
You walked out of my dream
Into my arms
Now you're my angel divine

Walkin' After Midnight - Patsy Cline (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Walkin' After Midnight (Patsy Cline, 1957). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-09-04. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Walkin' After Midnight," written by Alan Block and Don Hecht, was Patsy Cline's first entry onto the charts and turned into a crossover hit landing on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the no. 12 position in 1957 and no. 2 on the Hot Country and Western Sides' chart (songfacts, 2022; Whitburn, 1994, 2013). Cline rerecorded the song in 1961 with a more upbeat rhythm, dropping the steal guitar, adding background vocalists and adding a change in key for the last verse (allmusic, 2022; youtube, 2017). Initially, Cline did not like the song and refused to record it unless the company allowed her to record a second song of her choosing, which they agreed to (songfacts, 2022; W. Groff, wideopencountry, 2022). "Walkin' After Midnight" became a huge hit after she performed it on the popular show, "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts," and since then, Cline has been credited with opening the door for future female country/pop artists (W. Groff, wideopencountry, 2022). Tragically, "While en route to Nashville after playing a benefit concert in Kansas City, Patsy Cline died [along with her manager, country artists Hawkshaw Hawkins and Cowboy Copas, and the pilot] when her plane nose-dived into the Tennessee wilderness on March 5, 1963;" she was 30 years old (K. Fraga, Aug. 3, 2022).

I go out walkin' after midnight
Out in the moonlight, just like we used to do
I'm always walkin' after midnight
Searchin' for you
I walk for miles along the highway
Well that's just my way of sayin' I love you
I'm always walkin' after midnight
Searchin' for you
I stop to see a weepin' willow
Cryin' on his pillow
Maybe he's cryin' for me
And as the skies turn gloomy
Night winds whisper to me
I'm lonesome as I can be
I go out walkin' after midnight
Out in the starlight, just hopin' you may be
Somewhere a-walkin' after midnight
Searchin' for me
I stop to see a weepin' willow
Cryin' on his pillow
Maybe he's cryin' for me
And as the skies turn gloomy

I don't care if you never come home
I don't mind if you just keep on rowin' away on a distant sea
'Cause I don't love you and you don't love me
You cause a commotion when you come to town
You give 'em a smile and they melt
And your lovers and friends is all good and fine
But I don't like yours and you don't like mine
La la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
I don't care what you do at night
Oh, I don't care how you get you delites
We'll leave it alone and just let it be
I don't love you and you don't love me
I got a problem, can you relate
I got a woman callin' love hate
We made a vow we'd always be friends
How could we know that promises end
La la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
I tried to love for years upon years
You refuse to take me for real
It's time you saw what I want you to see
I'd still love you if you'd just love me

We made a vow we'd always be friends
How could we know that promises end

She ain't got no money
Her clothes are kinda funny
Her hair is kinda wild and free
Oh, but Love grows where my Rosemary goes
And nobody knows like me
She talks kinda lazy
And people say she she's crazy
And her life's a mystery
Oh, but Love grows where my Rosemary goes
And nobody knows like me
There's something about her hand holding mine
It's a feeling that's fine
And I just gotta say
She's really got a magical spell
And it's working so well
That I can't get away
I'm a lucky fella
And I've just got to tell her
That I love her endlessly
Because Love grows where my Rosemary goes
And nobody knows like me
There's something about her hand holding mine
It's a feeling that's fine

Lyrics:
If ever you got rain in your heart
Someone has hurt you, and torn you apart
Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me?
And let it be like they said it would be
Me loving you girl, and you loving me
Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me?
Run to me whenever you're lonely
Run to me if you need a shoulder
Now and then, you need someone older
So darling, you run to me
And when you're out in the cold
No one beside you, and no one to hold
Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me?
And when you've got nothing to lose
Nothing to pay for, nothing to choose
Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me
Run to me whenever you're lonely
Run to me if you need a shoulder
Now and then you need someone older
So darling, you run to me
Run to me whenever you're lonely
Run to me if you need a shoulder
Now and then you need someone older
So darling, you run to me
Run to me whenever you're lonely
Run to me if you need a shoulder
Now and then you need someone older

If You Leave - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
If You Leave (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), 1986). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-07-30. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"If You Leave," written by Martin Cooper, Malcolm Holmes, Paul Humphreys and Andrew McCluskey, was OMD's only top 10 hit landing at the no. 4 position on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986; the song was written for and featured in the film "Pretty In Pink" (songfacts, 2022; Whitburn, 2013). According to Interview.com (Mar. 30, 2011), "If You Leave" is "one of the most influential, zeitgeist-capturing songs ever to be written." According to McCluskey, the original song we wrote for "Pretty In Pink" was rejected because the director changed the ending of the movie. "we [were given] 2 days to write a new track at Larabee Studios in L.A. We worked until 4 a.m. writing a rough version and sent a motorbike to Paramount. John [Hughes, director] heard it, liked it, and our manager phoned us at 8 a.m. and told us to go back in and mix it. That's how 'If You Leave' Happened! (songfacts, 2022).

Lyrics:
If you leave, don't leave now
Please don't take my heart away
Promise me just one more night
Then we'll go our separate ways
We've always had time on our sides
But now it's fading fast
Every second
Every moment
We've got to, we've gotta make it last
I touch you once I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd still be friends someday
If you leave
I won't cry
I won't waste one single day
But if you leave, don't look back
I'll be running the other way
Seven years went under the bridge
Like time was standing still
Heaven knows what happens now
You've got to, you've gotta say you will
I touch you once, I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I need you then
You always said we'd meet again
I touch you once I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I need you then
You always said we'd still be friends
I touch you once I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I need you then
You always said we'd meet again someday
If you leave
If you leave
If you leave
Don't look back
Don't look back

Yellow River - Christie (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Yellow River (Christie, 1970). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-07-28. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Yellow River," written by Jeff Christie, was the only hit for the group hitting no. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the summer of 1970 and remained on the chart for 23 weeks (Whitburn, 2013). In an interview with Song Writing Magazine, Christie recalled his writing of the song. “I was always fascinated with the American Civil War and when I heard Glen Campbell’s Galveston, written by Jimmy Webb, it lit the spark that inspired me to write my own Galveston. . . . The concept was loosely about a confederate soldier’s relief and feelings on surviving the civil war, going home and hoping to find everything as it was and still in its place and if ‘the girl that he knew’ had stayed true and remained faithful" (songwritingmagazine, Jun. 16, 2020).

Lyrics:
So long boy you can take my place, got my papers I've got my pay
So pack my bags and I'll be on my way to yellow river
Put my guns down the war is won
Fill my glass high the time has come
I'm going back to the place that I love yellow river
Yellow river, yellow river is in my mind and in my eyes
Yellow river, yellow river is in my blood, it's the place I love
Got no time for explanations, got no time to lose
Tomorrow night you'll find me
Sleeping underneath the moon at yellow river
Cannon fire lingers in my mind, I'm so glad that I'm still alive
And I've been gone for such a long time from yellow river
I remember the nights were cool I can still see the water pool
And I remember the girl that I knew from yellow river
Yellow river, yellow river is in my mind and in my eyes
Yellow river, yellow river is in my blood it's the place I love
Got no time for explanations, got no time to lose
Tomorrow night you'll find me
Sleeping underneath the moon at yellow river
Yellow river, yellow river is in my mind and in my eyes
Yellow river, yellow river is in my blood it's the place I love
