"Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive" "Sentimental Lady," written by Bob Welch, was Welch's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart and landed at the no. 8 position on the chart; it was Welch's only top 10 hit (Whitburn, 2013). Welch was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1971-1974 before going solo (songfacts, 2023). On writing the song, Welch said that "The lyric was probably referencing my first wife (at the time) Nancy. The original placeholder/dummy lyrics for the chorus (before I had 'real' lyrics) were, 'my legs are sticks and my feet are stones" (songfacts, 2023). In 2012, Welch had spinal surgery from which he believed would leave him an invalid; three months later he committed suicide (C. Couch, hollywoodreporter, Jun 8, 2012). In his note to his wife he said “I’m not going to do this to you,” referring to the fact that she would need to take care of him as his mother needed to care for his father who was an invalid (M. "Keeping the Oldies Alive" Released in the winter of 1977, "Lay Down Sally" was Eric Clapton' fourth top 40 hit landing at the #3 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. The song was written by Clapton, Marcy Leven, and George Terry (Whitburn, 2013). The song was also Clapton's first entry onto the Billboard Top Country Singles chart rising to #26 (Whitburn, 1993). Clapton was born Eric Patrick Clapp in 1945 and was a member of various noteworthy groups: The Roosters, The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith (Whitburn, 1993). "Lay Down Sally" is performed in J. J. Cale style (last.fm, 2021) , whom was one of Clapton's highly respected influencers (guitarworld.com, 2021). "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive" "By the Time I Get To Phoenix," written by Jimmy Webb, was Glen Campbell's top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart rising to no. 26 in 1967 (Whitburn, 2013) and his first top ten on the Top Country Singles' chart the same year hitting the no. 2 position (Whitburn, 1994). Campbell won the Grammys for Best Contemporary Male Solo Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male for his rendition of the song (songfacts, 2023). "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive" "Young World," written by Jerry Fuller, was Rick Nelson's 15th top 10 hit rising to the no. 5 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1962 (Whitburn, 2013). The musicians who performed on the record for Nelson included Glen Campbell, James Burton, Joe Osborn, Ritchie Frost, and Jim Pierce (Wikipedia, 2023). Six months or so before the release of "Young World," Nelson decided to change his performing name from Ricky to Rick (Whitburn, 2013). Although "Young World" was a major hit for Nelson, it was only released as a single and did not appear on any of his initial album releases (Whitburn, 2006); it was finally included on his 2000 Legacy and 2005 Greatest Hits albums (allmusic, 2023). "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive" "Tell Laura I Love Her," written by Jeff Barry and Ben Raleigh, was Ray Peterson's first top 10 and highest ranked hit on the Billboard Hot 100 hitting the no. 7 position in 1960 (Whitburn, 2013), while Ricky Valance's version hit the no. 1 position the same year in the UK (Kutner & Leigh, 2005). What is interesting, is that the BBC and a number of radio stations in the US originally banned the song for fear that it would encourage some listeners to commit suicide (C. Weston, hitc, 2021; songfacts, 2023). "Decca Records in England picked up the original [Peterson] recording and broadcast a sample on the BBC. I wanted a newspaper and all they had was the International Herald Tribune which is all the tragic news in the world crammed into six pages with no sports results and no comics. Richardson (The Bib Bopper), was Richardson's debut single and his highest charting song rising to no. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained on the chart for 25 weeks; however, Richardson died, along with Richie Valens and Buddy Holly, less than a year after the release of this song (Feb. 3, 1959) (Whitburn, 2013). One interesting note is that Richardson produced three music videos during 1958, "Chantilly Lace," "Big Bopper's Wedding" and "Little Red Riding Hood," all written by Richardson (songfacts, 2023). Richardson referred to these videos as "rock videos." . . . "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive" "Red Red Wine," written by Neil Diamond, was a minor ballad hit for Diamond hitting the Billboard Hot 100 chart landing at the no. 62 position in 1968 and Vic Dana's version stalling at no. 72 in 1970; however, it was UB40's reggae version that many people remember. Their version originally rose to the no. 1 slot on the UK chart in 1983 and no. 34 on the US Billboard chart in 1984; but they released an extended version in the US, which included a rap sequence, in 1988. This version rose to no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (Kutner & Leigh, 2005; Whitburn, 2013). UB40s version was based on a 1969 reggae cover by Tony Tribe, thinking Tony Tribe's was the original version and that "N. Diamond" referred to Negus Diamond as the writer of the song (Kutner & Leigh, 2005). What is interesting is that Neil Diamond responded to a fan on Redit and stated that UB40's version is his favorite (N. "Heartbeat" was Holly's last single released prior to his untimely death (doyouremember, 2023), when he, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper (Jiles Perry "J.P." Richardson Jr.) were killed in a plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959; Holly was 22 years old (Dimery & MacDonald, 2007; Whitburn, 2013).
