During his stay, he grew to admire the Jewish inhabitants of the area and their fight for freedom in the Israel/Arab war. #RFK became a staunch defender of Israel and as Senator voted to send the country 50 Phantom Jets for defense. This angered a 24 year-old Palestinian immigrant named Sirhan Sirhan, who cited Kennedy's #Zionism as the reason why he murdered Sen. Kennedy in 1968. The political partnership between John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson was a mystery from the day it began -- on July 14, 1960, when #JFK asked #LBJ to be his running mate at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Both Sen. #Kennedy and Sen. Johnson's closest advisors, friends, and even family members were vehemently opposed to Johnson joining JFK on the ticket (most famously Jack's campaign manager and brother Bobby Kennedy, who tried several times to talk Jack and Lyndon out of it). But Jack's mind was pretty well made up. It had to be Johnson. As he told TIME Magazine's Hugh Sidey a few days before the convention: “There is no question in my mind,” said Kennedy. “Lyndon would be the best man I could get to run with me. He’s a Texan, a Southerner, he knows Congress, Washington, and he has the ability to be President. But I’m convinced he wouldn’t take it. He’d be more powerful staying as majority leader. What do you think?” Sidey had already gone over the question every which way with L.B.J. the night before, until Johnson got irritated and stormed that he would not do the Kennedy family’s bidding. He declared that the vice presidency was a worthless job compared with being Senate leader, related the sad tenure of “Cactus Jack” Garner, who had called the office nothing more than a “pitcher of warm spit,” and said Speaker Sam Rayburn had told him to stay far away from it. (Cactus Jack had actually used much more colorful language, saying that the vice presidency "wasn't worth a bucket of warm piss.") "If he could not be President," Sidey later recalled, "he would stay in the Senate, Johnson had told me with such rage and finality — his nose an inch from mine — that I chalked him off." Kennedy listened, grinned, nodded. Both were awed and amused by the tumultuous Johnson. “Have you decided on a vice-presidential nominee?” Sidey asked. “Yes,” answered Kennedy. “Can you tell me?” Sidey inquired. The 24 year-old Palestinian immigrant allegedly shot RFK in a fury over the 1968 presidential candidate’s support for arming #Israel with 50 Phantom jets. It was the first act of Palestinian terrorism on American soil — sparking five and a half decades more of terrorism and war that continues today in the Middle East. 24 Independent Presidential candidate Robert F. #Kennedy Jr. has been strangely silent the past few weeks about the #antisemitic, pro-#Hamas protests happening on college campuses. Although #RFKJr has been asked about it in recent interviews, and answers briefly in a lawyerly manner about the difference between demonstrations on public vs. private property, he has otherwise completely avoided talking about the issue. While every other candidate in the presidential race issued statements on this national crisis immediately, Kennedy waited nearly three weeks before speaking up. Kennedy finally posted a tweet about the campus unrest Saturday outlining what he would do as president to ensure fairness to all students on campus, but said nothing about what he would do to stop the lawlessness and violence we are witnessing on campuses across America. https://twitter.com/RobertKennedyJr/status/1786943517710786626 Kennedy has proclaimed himself to be strongly pro-Israel, and supports #Israel's war against Hamas. At the same time, he says he is "very pro-Palestinian," and supports the two-state solution that would establish #Palestine as an independent sovereign nation. Is Kennedy doing the same "both sides" dance as President #Biden, afraid of losing progressive Democrats and Gen Z voters? Are his campaign advisers telling Bobby to tone down his pro-Israel rhetoric in order to appease the woke mob? At a time when #antisemitism escalating to frightening levels, #Jews are being assaulted in the streets, and some protesters are issuing calls to "kill all the Zionists," it feels like open season on Jews. The exclusion of Jewish "#Zionists" from campuses, establishment of "Zionist-free zones," Jewish students not being allowed to attend class, acts of harassment, intimidation and violence, hate speech and symbols of Jew hatred on campus property are all flagrant violations of the 1964 Civil Rights Act -- which is not being enforced by campus administrators, state governments, or the federal government. On this edition of Maverick News we ask why President #Biden isn't doing what President John F. #Kennedy did: send in the National Guard to protect the rights of ALL students, stop the violence, enforce the law of the land, and restore order on campus. On this date in 1961 the newly sworn-in John F. #Kennedy began his first day as president. As evidenced by the first Executive Order he signed that day, expanding food assistance to the poor (what is known today as food stamps, or SNAP benefits), relieving poverty was at the top of his agenda for the New Frontier. #JFK also inherited a troubled #economy. The country was in a #recession -- it's third in 10 years -- at the time Kennedy took the oath of office on January 20, 1961. On November 22, 1963, the day President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was shot inDealey Plaza, Robert Groden had just turned 18. That day was his birthday, and he was at home playing hooky from Forest Hills High School in Queens, New York. He sat glued to the television watching the grim saga unfold on television all weekend, like every American. Since that fateful birthday Groden has devoted his entire life to ferreting out the truth beneath the surface of the bizarre pictures that flashed across his TV screen a half century ago. In the 1970s, Groden showed the American people the infamous Zapruder film of the #JFKAssassination for the very first time on television. Later, he worked as a photographic expert on the House Select Committee on Assassinations investigation of Kennedy's murder, and consulted on Oliver Stone's blockbuster film, "#JFK." Groden (R) consulting with the HSCA, 1979. Author of seven books on the Kennedy assassination, including a New York Times best-seller, Groden now lives in Dallas, where he lectures and sells his books to tourists in Dealey Plaza. He has been ticketed more than 80 times by the city, arrested and jailed twice. All of these alleged infractions have been tossed out by city courts as violations by the city of Groden's First Amendment rights. His long legal battle with the City of Dallas and the 6th Floor Museum was so incredible it became the subject of the 2014 documentary film, "Plaza Man." Whilevisiting Arlington National Cemeteryon Veterans Day, just a few weeks before his death, #JFK stood on the grounds of the Arlington House high on a hill above the national cemetery. As he took in the sweeping views of the rolling green hills and fall foliage, his eyes continued across the Potomac River to the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. He wistfully said that the views were so spectacularthat he “could stay here forever.” After his death on November 22, 1963, his widow Jackie selected a plot just below #Arlington House. This established the site of the #Kennedy family graves and offered her late husband the forever view he requested. The view from Kennedy's grave at Arlington National Cemetery. President Kennedy often told those close to him that he wanted the words "he kept the peace" inscribed on his tombstone. Although those words do not adorn his grave marker today, we agree with Kennedy's self-assessment of his own contribution to history. After an unhinged armed man showed up at one of the presidential candidate's speeches in Los Angeles last week, Robert F. #Kennedy, Jr. is now renewing his request to the #Biden administration for Secret Service protection -- IMMEDIATELY. #RFKJr's previous request for a Secret Service detail back in May was denied. Kennedy Campaign Manager Dennis Kucinich sent a letter to President Biden urging him to provide Democratic Presidential CandidateRobert F. Kennedy, Jr.Secret Service protection on September 18, three days after the troubling incident in L.A. Here’s Kucinich’s letter: Dear President Biden, This past Friday in Los Angeles, at a Hispanic Heritage event, a gunman posing as a U.S. Marshall sought to gain entrance to the venue where Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. was about to speak. The man was carrying a fully loaded weapon and was accompanied by a second individual who carried additional weapons and ammunition. He was intercepted by a private security detail before he could harm anyone, and arrested by the LAPD. The threat level to our candidate, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., is increasing every day. He is not the only one in danger — every person who attends a campaign event is at risk. A specter of violence haunts our political process. Indeed, political assassinations pose a grave threat to democracy. It is not hard to imagine the civil chaos and political disintegration that could ensue with the return of the kind of assassinations of public officials and presidential candidates that marred the 1960s. This ever-present threat of violence is something you are well aware of given the security requirements for you and members of your family. It is astonishing that under such circumstances, you would deny Secret Service coverage to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has polled more than 20% in the first five primary states, and whose net favorability rating exceeds both yours and Donald Trump's. Although it is a well-known historical fact, apparently in your case it bears repeating: Mr. Kennedy's uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated. Mr. Kennedy's father, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated while a presidential candidate. The American psyche still bears the scars of those devastating events. Together with the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., they sent America into a tailspin from which many believe the country has not yet recovered. I served in Congress for 16 years and joined you on the campaign trail in one of two efforts I made to gain the Democratic nomination. You and I have known each other for more than 50 years. I know that you do not want to see America reeling again from the consequences of another political assassination. Therefore, I ask you in the spirit of patriotism, of fairness, and of good conscience to grant Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. the Secret Service protection that his circumstances so obviously warrant. For nearly two years, a group of #QAnon believers have gathered in Dallas, performing rituals in Dealey Plaza — the site of President #Kennedy’s 1963 assassination — expecting to call back from the dead not only the spirit of #JFK, but also his son, #JFKJr., in an apparent shared delusion that JFK Jr. will be Donald #Trump’s vice presidential running mate in 2024. The group is led by Michael Protzman, aka “#Negative48.” To his followers, he’s a Messiah. But friends and family members of those who have fallen under his spell worry that they’ve lost their loved ones forever — along with thousands of dollars donated to the Protzman JFK QAnon cult. Protzman and his group camped out in a luxury Dallas hotel for 5 months awaiting JFK’s return — financed by his affluent donors — then returned for another extended stay last summer. The grift is good for Protzman so far. Protzman made his declaration that no one without enough money should travel to Dallas because the latest predicted return of JFK would trigger “10 days of darkness” (which of course, didn’t happen, either). One cult follower’s daughter told Vice News that her mother told the family she was only going to Dallas for the weekend…and then never came home. “She told me that Michael has moved the dates again, and when I questioned if she saw Jesus, she called me a satanist and the devil and then promptly hung up,” Linda said, adding that her mother has completely changed her personality since starting to follow Protzman’s online conspiracies last year. “My real mother would never do that.” Protzman has destroyed dozens of families over the course of the last two years, with many members of his inner circle now left with nowhere to go, even if they did want to leave the cult. This has led to rising tensions between certain members of the group in Dallas, there were some angry clashes between Protzman’s group and a splinter group known as the “Scooby-Doo Crew” who were kicked out by Protzman over money issues. During one face-off in the lobby of Hyatt hotel, one of Protzman’s most loyal followers struck a member of the splinter group in the face. The growing anger is also playing out in increasingly unhinged audio chats on Telegram where some members are making overt threats against opposing groups. “I keep saying, something is eventually going to happen, one of them is gonna snap. I just don’t know which one,” Karma, an open-source researcher who has been closely tracking this group since the beginning, told VICE News. Once JFK and son failed to materialize in Dealey Plaza, “Negative 48” and his followers then attached themselves to the Freedom Convoy (and the USA People’s Convoy), traveling with the Convoy for a few months before becoming Donald Trump MAGA groupies who follow the president to every rally like old school Grateful Deadheads. On this episode of Maverick News, Rick Walker and I remember John F. #Kennedy Jr., who was laid to rest 24 years ago today. #JFKJr's funeral was a star-studded affair. At any other time, a gathering of celebrities such as this would have been joyful -- but on this unforgettable day, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. President #Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton were among the 315 invited guests who gathered in the shadowy sanctuary and red velvet pews of the 129-year-old Church of St. Thomas More on Manhattan's Upper East Side to mourn Kennedy, his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, 33, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, 34, who died July 16, 1999 in a plane crash. The Kennedy family's surviving patriarch, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), delivered a moving eulogy. "From the first day of his life, John seemed to belong not only to our family, but to the American family," Kennedy said, choking at times with emotion, of his 38-year-old nephew. "He had a legacy, and he learned to treasure it. He was part of a legend, and he learned to live with it." Throngs of journalists staked out the area around the church, where streets were cordoned off to traffic. Pedestrian movement was locked down tightly by New York City police and U.S. Secret Service agents. Hundreds of onlookers, some of them moved to tears, gathered on the surrounding streets for several hours, their flowers of condolence wilting in the blazing heat. In his eulogy, Kennedy – the family patriarch since the assassinations of his brothers, President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in 1968 – evoked both humor about times gone by and mournful regrets at a future that is no more. "We thank the millions who have rained blossoms down on John's memory," Kennedy said, standing near an altar surrounded by white roses and lilies of the valley. "He and his bride have gone to be with his mother and father, where there will never be an end to love. He was lost on that troubled night, but we will always wake for him, so that his time, which was not doubled, but cut in half, will live forever in our memory and in our beguiled and broken hearts." Quoting a bit of William Butler Yeats' "In Memory of Major Robert Gregory," he said, "We dared to think, in that other Irish phrase, that this John Kennedy would live to comb gray hair, with his beloved Carolyn by his side. But like his father, he had every gift but length of years." Among other guests were Senate Minority Leader Thomas A. Daschle (D-S.D.), Sens. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) and John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), and former senator Alan K. Simpson (R-Wyo.), who has been teaching at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. The Mass was celebrated by the same Jesuit priest, the Rev. Charles J. O'Byrne, who married John and Carolyn Kennedy in a private ceremony on Cumberland Island, Ga. Only three short years later, he officiated at their burial at sea.
