Army veteran brought to breaking point by “Ungrateful” Americans A US Army veteran who felt he was wronged in an altercation and subsequent trial has burned his dress uniform, claiming that America has stabbed him in the back.

North Carolina resident Vern Williams is a 12-year-veteran of the US Army, a father of three and a former member of both the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. Thanks to what he feels is an injustice in the legal system, he’s also been found guilty of threatening a woman with a knife.

Williams claims that the woman -who was considerably older than him- came onto his property and refused to leave, eventually calling the police and claiming he threatened her with a bladed instrument. Williams was subsequently taken in and charged.

Williams claims that the judge ignored North Carolina law and sympathized with the trespasser (who allegedly lied under oath) because the judge “looked exactly like the woman who pressed charges on me.”

In the claims made on his Go Fund Me (which was rendered mostly unquotable due to excessive grammatical errors). Williams admits he has been financially strained by the legal battle, but is willing “to go to the Supreme Court if need be.”

Now angry and trying to stay out of prison, Williams has burned his uniform in protest.

“Everything on this uniform right here, I sweat and I bled [for,]” he said, pointing to his uniform and pinning his irreplaceable Purple Heart to his dress jacket’s collar.

He then covered his uniform in gasoline and set it alight, causing wool, nylon, polyester and stacks of decorations to go up in orange flames and black smoke.

“Why in God’s green Earth would you y’all allow judges to not follow the law?” he asked the camera.

The Currituck County resident is currently engaged in a legal battle to prevent him from going to prison and missing time with his family.

Burning uniforms has long been a form of protest associated with protest against one’s military- Williams has taken it a step further by protesting against the public who allows such injustices to take place on US soil, particularly against those who defend said people.

Zur, whose TikTok has more than 100,000 views, wasn't expecting the video to receive the amount of attention that it did—both positive and negative. Despite some of the backlash, she said that burning her uniform felt like the right thing to do.

“I swore an oath to protect the people from foreign and domestic terrorism,” Zur told Motherboard, adding that she believes the overturn of Roe v. Wade is domestic terrorism.

Melinda Grisby served as a medic in the Air Force until 2011 and was deployed to Iraq twice. She said that after Roe was overturned, it didn’t feel right to see her uniform hanging in the closet. So she set it on fire, posting a video of the uniform burning to TikTok and telling viewers that the phrase “thank you for your service” doesn't mean the same thing to her anymore. Grisby said the ubiquitous expression now translates to, “thank you for protecting my rights while I strip away yours.”

She said that she posted the video because she wants her viewers to understand that veterans do not stop serving even after they have been discharged.

“We're going to continue to fight, and we're not going to back down,” she told Motherboard.

Grisby’s voiceover has been used in 84 videos on TikTok, and though nearly all of them feature female military veterans, she said it has been “heartwarming” to see men participate as well. One of these participants is @ma_taxpro, a “salty veteran” who served for 10 years in the infantry and asked to be identified by his first name, Dan, because he feared retaliation against his family. In his video, which he posted on Independence Day, he steadily records from behind his phone as fire engulfs his uniform. He said that Grisby’s video inspired him to burn his uniform and post it on TikTok.

Dan lives in a state where abortion is likely to remain legal and posted the video because he couldn't find a protest to attend nearby. He said that as a single parent of three daughters, traveling to a protest isn't feasible for him, so posting on TikTok was a way for him to make his voice heard.

By posting the video, he also hoped to dispel the notion that all veterans support the GOP and has a message for Republicans who believe that veterans will always be on their side: “Not so much,” he said.

As a parent of a daughter in the LGBTQ community, he is particularly concerned about the additional implications of the overturn outside of abortion. There has recently been renewed disussion surrounding gay rights after Justice Clarence Thomas’ concurrence calling for the reconsideration of Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same sex marriage nationwide.

“My kids are directly affected by this,” he said. “So I take this quite personal.”

Grisby, who is also a parent, echoed Dan’s sentiment, saying that she does not want her son to have to fight for the same things that she and her mother had to. Unlike Zur, who has been outspoken about her lack of pride in being a veteran, Grisby said her feelings are complicated.

“I do have pride for the people that sacrificed many things, not just their lives—their limbs, their mental health,” she said, noting that she wants to be a voice for these individuals.

She said that while she wants to be proud of having served her country, she feels like America has turned its back on her.

“It's very conflicting. On one hand, you do have pride but on the other hand, you feel betrayed,” she said.

About Face: Veterans Against the War, originally founded as Iraq Veterans Against War, held the vigil for Bushnell in effort to ensure the sacrifice they said he made was not in vain. "Some of us are burning our medals. The rest of us are burning the last pieces of the military we had, to tell Aaron that he's not alone, and to show him that he's not alone," one of the protesters said in the video.

The group has seen a serious uptick in the number of veterans reaching out, Howard said, since Bushnell's passing last Sunday. Chowdhury was among a number of veterans arrested in the days leading into Veterans' Day weekend in 2023, after conducting a sit-in at the office of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., demanding her support in calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. Gillibrand is a senior member of the Armed Services Committee.

"He was one of us. You know, so it's like even in those final moments, we just understood," Chowdhury said of Bushnell in an interview with Military.com. "There is a sense of just that camaraderie that is forever-lasting, especially now that we're on the other side of things and are trying to use our experience in a way that will be more helpful to the world."

While veterans are no longer subjected to the restrictions of military regulations, active-duty, reserve and Guard service members still must adhere to a number of guidelines from their individual branches and the Defense Department as a whole.

April 14, 2024 - Riddhi Patel, 28, who grew up in Bakersfield and was until Monday working as the economic development coordinator for a local nonprofit, was arrested after public statements she made last week on the topic of a cease-fire and on metal detectors at City Hall.

On Monday, Patel’s employer, the Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment, announced that officials there had “made the decision to terminate Riddhi Patel.” The statement added that officials at the nonprofit “unequivocally condemn any threats of violence or unethical behavior.”

Among her comments, Patel said the council members were such “horrible human beings” that “Jesus probably would have killed you himself.” Later, she expressed hope that oppressed people might “bring the guillotine.” She concluded her public statements by saying: “We’ll see you at your house. We’ll murder you.”

In response, Mayor Karen Goh at first calmly called for the next speaker to come to the lectern, and then paused and said: “Ms. Patel, that was a threat, what you said at the end. So the officers are going to escort you out and take care of that.”

On Friday, Patel appeared in court and tearfully pleaded not guilty. Neither she nor her representatives could be reached for comment... But now this woman (Riddhi Patel, 28) Is very mad about her arrest. Her Hate Group in Calif. is still planning for the killings to be at a later date.

Patel, wearing a colorful dress and speaking calmly, addressed both issues during the meeting’s public comment period.

In calling for a cease-fire, she said she expected that council members would not support it because they were “horrible human beings and Jesus probably would have killed you himself.”

She added that council members didn’t care about oppression in Gaza because “you don’t care about oppression occurring here” and then listed a number of problems in Kern County, including poor wages and waves of evictions.

She referenced an Indian holiday, Chaitra Navratri, and said that some in “the global south” believe in “violent revolution against their oppressors. I hope one day somebody brings the guillotine and kills all you mother—-.”

After those comments, Goh said: “Thank you.” Then she called for the next speaker.

The United Liberation Front, the local group calling for a cease-fire, publicly condemned Patel’s comments later that night. “It does not represent those of us in the community who continue to show up and exercise our civic duty.”

Fifteen minutes later, Patel again rose from her seat in the audience to address the council on a second issue involving metal detectors and increased security at City Hall, which she and others believe could stifle public participation. The issue has been a hot-button one in Bakersfield for years; in 2021, groups including the ACLU of Southern California protested the council’s “rules of public decorum” that were instituted during Black Lives Matter protests to place some limits on public speakers. The groups called the rules “overbroad” and said they could violate the 1st Amendment.

Patel, whose public biography says she has a degree in neuroscience and enjoys “holding elected officials accountable” as well as movies, sports and time outdoors with her family and friends, accused the council of trying to criminalize members of the public who protest their policies.

No one on the council appeared to react, and Patel returned to her seat before police removed her.

The Kern County district attorney could not be reached for comment but in a statement to Bakersfield.com said that charges against Patel include 10 counts of threatening with the intent to terrorize a public official: five City Council members, the mayor, the city clerk, the assistant city clerk, the city attorney and the city manager.

She also faces eight counts of threatening specific public officials. That includes all but two of those at the meeting. The district attorney told Bakersfield.com that Councilmembers Bob Smith and Eric Arias “are not considered victims because they did not feel threatened.”

Patel was arrested last week after telling the council during public comment, “We’ll see you at your house. We’ll murder you.”

Patel had been one of several voices at a recent Bakersfield City Council meeting demanding the council pass a resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war. Patel was also speaking out against recent security measures put in place for city council meetings.

Pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted previous meetings over the council not passing a ceasefire resolution. Mayor Karen Goh asked Bakersfield police officers to remove them each time.

The pro-Palestinian group United Front Liberation has disavowed Patel’s comments following the meeting. The group said Patel’s comments did not “represent those of us in the community who continue to show up and exercise our civic duty by engaging directly with our elected representatives.”

Patel was charged Friday with 18 felony counts including making terroristic threats and threatening a public official. Patel pleaded not guilty to the charges.
