In this video, I explain why selenium is vital for people with Hashimoto’s disease, in response to a question about whether Brazil nuts are a good source of selenium.

Selenium is really good for people with Hashimoto’s. It acts as an antioxidant to the high amount of oxidation going on, especially hydrogen peroxide, which it can counter. Selenium also helps convert the thyroid hormone T4 to T3, which is the active form.

But here’s the problem. Out of all the nuts, Brazil nuts have the highest amount of phytic acid. Phytic acid binds minerals, including selenium. So, what you have to do is soak the Brazil nuts overnight in water, to germinate them and get rid of the phytic acid.

If you consume them raw, you’ll have too much phytic acid and you’ll block not only phytic acid but also zinc, iron, magnesium, and calcium, along with chromium, manganese, and copper. You could roast the nuts, but the problem with roasting is that the heat destroys heat-sensitive vitamins like vitamin E, along with the oils that are beneficial.

So, either soak the Brazil nuts overnight or get your selenium from seafood. Then you’ll get the benefits of selenium to help with your Hashimoto's disease.
