Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe has called for the cancellation of the country's proposed parliamentary Indigenous "voice" referendum, calling it "window dressing."
As one of Australia's leading Indigenous politicians and an independent upper house member, Thorpe expressed her dissent towards the initiative during a presentation at the National Press Club in Sydney on Wednesday.
"The voice is the window-dressing for constitutional recognition," she told reporters. "This is just another attempt by a colonial government to make clear that it has power over us and force its rules upon us."
