Crew Of The Margaret O’Leary Retrieves Lost Anchor Off Pigeon Rip
August 23, 2024 Michael and I were underway from Goldsmiths Marina in Southold at 12:15pm, destination Pigeon Rip, which is located 1.6 nautical miles north of Plum Island. We were on a quest to retrieve my anchor that I lost the previous day while fishing with a friend. Unable to retrieve it due to heavy current, I decided to tie a boat fender off to it, in the hopes of retrieving it during slack tide. That slack tide lasted approximately nine minutes. Michael and I fished the area, and as 2:04 pm approached we kept an eye out in the hopes that the boat fender would float to the surface, which it did. We had a short window, nine minutes, to find and retrieve the anchor. Mission accomplished! As an added bonus, upon retrieving we found two complete Seabass rigs fishermen had lost due to snagging on the anchor line. By 5:45pm we were tying the Margaret O’Leary up in her slip. Also in attendance was Gunner and Grady, “Southold’s Best Looking Dogs.” Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching.

FDNY Brothers Catch & Release White Marlin Aboard The Montauk Downeast Fishing Boat “Mary Alice”
8/27/2024 I was running late and texted Pete that I wouldn’t arrive to the Marine Basin till 3:20am which gave me 10 minutes before I was officially late! Grabbed my gear out of my truck and noticed that Pernickety Pete was approaching the fuel dock for my curbside pickup. Before stepping aboard I checked the time, 3 minutes to spare, 3:27am. If you’re on time, you’re late! We had seven lines set before sunrise/graylight. We trolled till 7:30am and switched over to jigging, no luck. Captain Pete set a course for the Ranger Wreck and once again set up to troll. Everything was in our favor, pristine water, whales, dolphins, tuna grass and tuna chicks, but nothing was taking the lures we had set up behind the Mary Alice. Then around 10am one of the big international reels started to scream! Fish on!!! To our surprise the Mary Alice would land her first white marlin. It was the first marlin I’ve ever seen close-up, I was psyched. We snapped a few pictures, and the beautiful Marlin was on her way. Then about an hour and a half later, the second big penn international reel started to sing and Mike strapped on a belt, and reeled in a nice yellowfin tuna. At that point, I’m sure all of us thought that we could put a couple more tuna fish in the boat, but that was not to be. With the crew in agreement, we ended looking for tunafish and decided to head Inshore with the hopes of catching some fluke and seabass off Cartwright. We landed a couple short fluke, which were released and a handful of porgies and seabass. FDNY lineup: Captain Pete Carey L42/M1, Kevin Profitlich R2, Mike Healy L42/E45 and Tommy May E89/E326/M9. Dolphins Lead The Fishing Boat Mary Alice To The Tuna Grounds.
8/14/2024 Dolphins lead the Mary Alice to the tuna fishing grounds. Pushed off the dock and were underway at 3:30am. Great day fishing 25 miles south of Montauk, NY. We trolled and jigged, but trolling worked out best for us. Caught two smaller bluefin, but failed to find a larger bluefin. Everybody went home with fish. Arrived back home to Montauk around 4:30pm, fueled up, cleaned the boat and fish. Long day, arrived home around 9pm and hit the crib, where I slept like a baby! Hope you enjoyed the video

Montauk Fishing Boat “Mary Alice” 30 Miles South Of Montauk
8/2/2024 The Mary Alice departed Montauk Harbor at 1:30am and set a course south, distance 30 miles. At 4:30am/gray light, half an hour before sunrise the crew had lines set and Captain Persnickety Pete set our trolling course. During the coarse of the day we alternated between trolling and jigging. We managed 2 smaller slot bluefin tuna and released several others. We had a larger tuna on, that might have been our larger slot bluefin, but we lost him. That’s why they call it fishing and not catching! Overall a great day fishing aboard the Mary Alice, complete with her new paint job and upgrades. On our way heading home approximately 10 miles south of the point, we stopped to view a pod of whales. There must’ve been 20 whales in a half mile radius and boy what a show they put on for us. As we laid dead in the water viewing their acrobatic show, two large humpback whales crossed our bow. Captain Pete backed down, to allow them safe passage. What a way to wrap up the day, amazing! Great boat, great captain, great crew! Hope you enjoyed the video

Rapper Tom MacDonald Makes An Appearance In The North Carolina Mountains
6/28/2024 While speaking with my cousin Amy, I mentioned to her that we missed the family beach vacations. With that said her and Fernando invited us to their Jefferson County North Carolina Mountain house for the weekend where we celebrated Marie and Billy‘s birthdays. Marie knew we were coming, but Billy had no idea, it was a surprise. We rolled up playing “White Trash” by rapper Tom MacDonald. Thanks for the invite, we had a great time!

FDNY Fishermen Team Up Aboard The Fishing Boat Margaret O’Leary
7/23/2024 Well, I finally got Larry Blieka aboard the Margaret O’Leary for some Northfork fishing. Thank God I don’t have a GoPro, and had to put the iPhone away during the netting operation. Three tries at the net, or was it four? You’ll hear some laughing in the video as I had to put the phone in my pocket. Funny stuff! We managed a couple short fluke, none of which were keepers, and this short stripper shown in the video. Great day underwater!

Larry Blieka’s Northfork Stripper
7/23/2024 Retired FDNY Chief Larry Blieka teamed up with Tom’s Guide Service today. The weather report was a little bit different than the weather we dealt with today. I knew we’d be fishing the flood tide, but thought we’d be looking at light variable winds. That was not the case, we had 15 mile an hour winds out of the east, same direction as the current. We deploy a sea anchor and still used 10 ounce weights. We managed a bunch of short fluke and one striper measuring 27 inches, which was returned, as it wasn’t within the 28 inch to 31 inch slot. Great day on the water, with a couple firehouse stories to boot.

Captain Phil’s Smoked Salmon Pate
7/10/2024 Captain Phil is one of Long Island’s Northfork Fisherman. In the early 80s, I’m guessing 1980-82, Captain Phil served aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Woodrush WLB-407 home-ported in Sitka, Alaska. I served aboard the Woodrush also, but departed shortly before his arrival. My guess, is that while Captain Phil was stationed in Alaska he got the idea to start smoking fish. That’s only my guess, you’ll have to ask him. So if you find yourself in East Hampton, New York, keep an eye out for Captain Phil at one of the local markets. Hope you enjoyed the video.
