William James, in his Principles of Psychology, defined genius as little more than the faculty of perceiving in an unhabitual way. And the genius, as defined by Dr. James, seems to be that rare bird who knows that change is not only good, but inevitable. He anticipates the inevitable. He knows that whatever he sees that is made by man, or served by man, is imperfect, is always in the state of evolving. Grazing cattle tends to rebuild the soil and make it come alive – if you learn how to mimic Mother Nature. And it can add topsoil in that same way. When a cow grazes, the live biota that survive in the cow's gut to aid digestion wind up back on the ground to rebuild the soil. When you disk and plow and cultivate the soil, you are killing off these biota. Those microorganisms interact with the root structures, minerals and other nutrients to help the plants thrive. The biota travel out through the cattle manure as a natural, ongoing process. Cows are nature's example of the combine. Cows harvest the grass, process it into muscle and fertilizer, and cultivate the ground meanwhile. Have you ever noticed how most people seem to be waiting to be happy in the future? They seem to be so intent on getting through the day, they forget to enjoy it. Pushing it out into the determinate future involves running the risk that we won’t know how to be happy when we get there. Our thoughts, habits, even our abilities must be those of the person we believe ourselves to be. We can set new limits in place of old ones. But we can’t surpass the limits of our current self-image. If the actual experience we need is not available to us, we can, according to self-image psychology, create that experience synthetically. Now scientists agree that the human nervous system is incapable of distinguishing between actual experience and the same experience imagined vividly and in complete detail. Why not practice holding the self-image of the person you most want to become? This is the person you can become. Use your spare moments to concentrate on your goals and the greater success you seek. One time the late Dr. Maxwell Maltz, whom we called Uncle Max, dropped by my office for a chat and lunch. It took a crop failure to open my eyes. The farm I loved wasn't making enough to pay its own way. Misapplied herbicides had killed the first crop. But the bigger lesson is when I fenced it in with a portable polywire and let my cows graze it off. That was the eye-opener. They got fat and raised their calves on that all fall. A public meeting about Disasters brought this book to life. This meeting was simply to help people get organized so they could help each other when the worst happened. Saving lives, property, everything of real value. So human life could get going again after Nature got through with its extreme weather. The biggest problem at that meeting was their paltry turnout. THIS BOOK WAS INSPIRED after a realization that I'd published a massive number of books for more than a decade – mostly all wrong.
