EUROPEAN ANTIBIOTIC AWARENESS DAY
EUROPEAN ANTIBIOTIC AWARENESS DAY
On November 18th, European Antibiotic Awareness Day encourages the responsible use of antibiotics. The day also aims to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance.
The invention of antibiotics is always listed as one of the greatest medical discoveries ever. People could now cure once-feared bacterial infections. In 1929, Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic. The drug became widely popular after WWII. Some statistics suggest this “miracle drug” saved an estimated 200 million lives. Penicillin is also partly responsible for the prosperity that people experienced in developed countries around this time.
Today, there are over 100 types of antibiotics. On the one hand, it’s good news that antibiotics can cure so many different kinds of infections. On the one hand, antibiotics do effectively treat many different kinds of infections. However, on the other hand, people have become dependent on antibiotics. As a result, some people have become resistant to antibiotics. Superbugs have also made an appearance and are growing in number. These types of bacteria are highly resistant to antibiotics. The latest statistics show that 33,000 people a year die from an infection because of antibiotic resistance. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics accelerate resistance strains. Implementing solutions now will help curb the growing problem.
Ways to Decrease Antibiotic Dependence
Only use antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Never demand antibiotics if your doctor says you don’t need them.
Never share your leftover antibiotics with anyone else.
Prevent infections naturally by washing hands and keeping a distance from sick people.
Prepare food correctly.
Choose foods that are not made with antibiotics.
Healthcare professionals are encouraged to do their part as well to reduce antibiotic resistance. They should only prescribe antibiotics when necessary. They should also do all they can to avoid the spread of infection in their environment and report antibiotic-resistant infections.
HOW TO OBSERVE #EuropeanAntibioticAwarenessDay
On this day, healthcare organizations and professionals throughout Europe hold events to educate the public on the proper use of antibiotics. To participate:
Learn the difference between viral infections and bacterial infections.
Research different kinds of antibiotics and the proper way to take them.
Watch the documentary Resistance which discusses antibiotic-resistant superbugs.
Learn how to prevent infections and prepare food properly.
Also, be sure to share this day on social media with #EuropeanAntibioticAwarenessDay.
EUROPEAN ANTIBIOTIC AWARENESS DAY HISTORY
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control established European Antibiotic Awareness Day in 2008. They chose November 18th, as it coincides with the World Health Organization’s antibiotics awareness week. This week is held each year from November 13-19.

INTERNATIONAL HAPPY GOSE DAY
INTERNATIONAL HAPPY GOSE DAY
Every year on November 17th beer lovers gathers together to celebrate International Happy Gose Day. Instead of rhyming with a rose, Gose (ɡōzə) rhymes with Rosa.
Gose is a fermented sour wheat beer that originated during the sixteenth century in Goslar, located in Northern Germany. In later years, Gose became more associated with the city of Leipzig. The beer became so popular that it gained exemption for the country’s purity law called Reinheitsgebot. This law stated that German beer could only contain water, barley, yeast, and hops. But Gose is also made with malted wheat and coriander. Salty water from the Goslar River was also used, giving the drink a unique salty and tart taste.
The beer was made until WWII. After the war, Gose disappeared for a while but made a comeback in 1949. Friedrich Wurzler Brauerei is credited for saving Gose and he continued to brew the sour beer until he passed away. He then passed on his Gose-making abilities to his stepson, Guido Pfister. He continued brewing the beer until the 1960s but only a few pubs sold the fermented beer. Pfnister died in 1966. Gose would not come back into existence until 1986. Today, there are still 400 makers of Gose with a handful of them in the United States.
HOW TO OBSERVE #InternationalHappyGoseDay
Today is a day for Gose lovers to unite. If you know of a brewery or pub that serves Gose, today is the perfect day to gather your friends and go out for a drink. While you’re drinking it though, you’re not allowed to say, “Cheers.” Instead say, “Goseanna!” If you brew your own beer at home, you can use this recipe to make your best Gose.
If you can’t find Gose, it’s a great day to try a new kind of brew. You may want to try one of these popular German beers:
Pilsner
Weihenstephan Hefe Weissbier
Spaten Oktoberfest
Aecht Schlenkeria Rauchbier
Gaffel Kölsch
Whatever kind of beer you choose to drink on this day, be sure to share it on social media with #lHappyGoseDay.
INTERNATIONAL HAPPY GOSE DAY HISTORY
International Happy Gose Day originated in Leipzig, which is referred to by some as The City of Gose. The first International Happy Gose Day was held on November 17th, 2016 by the Leipziger Bierfreunder.

INTERNATIONAL CHECK YOUR WIPERS DAY
INTERNATIONAL CHECK YOUR WIPERS DAY
International Check Your Wipers Day, on November 16, reminds drivers to regularly check their windshield wipers to ensure optimum visibility in the event of inclement weather on the road.
According to the FHWA, about 21% of all accidents in the United States are weather-related. As travelers plan for road trips, it’s important to remind them to proactively check their wipers. Visibility is an important factor in driving in poor weather conditions like rain, snow, and ice. A survey by MICHELIN® Wiper Blades found that 92% of drivers agree that poor wiper blades can affect their driving ability. However, 90% of drivers do not plan the time to check their wipers properly and 55%+ don’t know how to check their wiper blades properly.
OBSERVING #CheckYourWipersDay
On International Check, Your Wipers Day, ensure your family’s driving ability and safety by checking the windshield wipers on all your cars. Great reminders on when to check your wipers include:
During an oil change.
When you fill the gas.
After a car wash.
Before a road trip.
At the start of the winter and spring seasons.
Add checking your wipers to your maintenance checklist. When you celebrate, be sure to use #CheckYourWipersDay on social media.
Standard recommendations suggest we change our wiper blades every 6 to 12 months. However, the frequency varies depending on the location of residence and how often the vehicle is driven. This requires people to regularly inspect their wipers to ensure that they are not past the lifespan, which leads to compromised visibility.
INTERNATIONAL CHECK YOUR WIPERS DAY HISTORY
The Registrar at National Day Calendar proclaimed National Check Your Wipers Day in September of 2021. As of 2022, due to seasonality, MICHELIN® officially requested May 16th become National Check Your Wipers Day (Día Nacional de Revisar Tus Limpiaparabrisas) for countries in Latin America. Additionally, MICHELIN® changed the November 16 observance to International Check Your Wipers Day to be celebrated in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. Both the May 16 and November 16 observances are a reminder to educate drivers about checking their wiper blades.
Regular car maintenance includes routinely checking the condition of the wiper blades for optimal performance. It also helps you avoid getting caught in inclement weather.

November 11th, International Origami Day
INTERNATIONAL ORIGAMI DAY
On November 11th, International Origami Day celebrates this unique art form that originated in Japan. It’s also a day to learn more about origami and use it to create something from paper.
Have you ever seen someone take a square piece of paper and fold it into a shape or image? If so, you have witnessed someone using an art form called origami. The original term is kata, which means folded shapes. The word transitioned to origami in 1880.
According to some historians, origami existed in the 1600s. The earliest set of written instructions on origami came out in 1764. Folding images from paper became a vital skill for aristocrats and high-ranking Japanese soldiers. Because paper was very expensive, only those in the upper class did origami. When paper prices decreased, origami spread throughout Japanese society. When the isolationist foreign policy of Japan ended in 1853, origami made its way to other parts of the world.
International interest in origami was spurred by Akira Yoshizawa. He developed current standards for origami practices. Additionally, the cultural ambassador of Japan designed countless origami patterns. It’s no surprise that Akira Yoshizawa became known as the father of modern origami.
Most people today use the standard 6-inch square paper to make origami. The most popular things to make include the fortune teller, crane, lotus flower, jumping frog, butterfly, swan, hat, and heart. Besides providing an outlet for your creativity, there are other benefits of origami. Along with encouraging relaxation, origami strengthens eye-hand coordination and develops fine motor skills. Additionally, this art form enhances math skills and supports mental concentration.
HOW TO OBSERVE #InternationalOrigamiDay
On this day, origami groups and associations from around the world hold online classes, make video tutorials, and have origami exhibitions. To participate:
Have an origami day party with friends and family.
Learn more about the history of origami.
Find easy origami projects online and do some with your kids.
Read books about origami, such as “Everyone Can Learn Origami,” “Dinosaur Origami”, or “Origami from Angelfish to Zen”.
Post a picture of your origami creation on social media with #InternationalOrigamiDay.
INTERNATIONAL ORIGAMI DAY HISTORY
The Nippon Origami Association chose November 11th as International Origami Day in Japan. This day matches the idea of peace as expressed by Remembrance Day. One of Japan’s symbols of peace is the origami crane.

November 13th, as part of World Kindness Day,
WORLD KINDNESS DAY
On November 13th, as part of World Kindness Day, we are encouraged to spread kindness like an infectious cold. We want to share it more than usual because studies show when others observe kindness in action they are more likely to carry out an act of kindness, too.
#WorldKindnessDay
So, imagine if you head out for the day and your neighbor’s garbage can has tipped over. Instead of ignoring it and letting the wind make a mess, you pick it up and return it to the corner. Three other neighbors notice and give you a smile and a nod on their way to work.
One of those neighbors notices a stranded driver on the side of the road on his commute to work. He remembers your thoughtfulness and offers assistance to the stranded driver. Several passersby take notice.
At a business office, a woman struggles with a paper jam. She’s had a horrible day. The customer has been waiting, but she remembers the stranded driver she passed earlier in the day. The customer lets the office worker take her time. Anyone can have a bad day, but this prevents it from getting worse and may even make it better.
We each have the potential to improve each others’ lives through understanding and kindness. Whether it’s a friend, family member, coworker, or stranger, our ability to show our humanity should have no limit.
HOW TO OBSERVE WORLD KINDNESS DAY
On World Kindness Day, let your compassion shine brightly. Get caught showing as much kindness as possible, too.
For more inspiration on leading a life of kindness, Orly Wahba has written a book, and her organization Life Vest Inside produced a short film called Kindness Boomerang.

November 14th, World Diabetes Day
Around the globe on November 14th, World Diabetes Day raises awareness and provides education concerning a disease that affects over 400 million adults internationally.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar levels. It is also a leading cause of blindness, amputation, heart disease, and kidney disease. Besides causing severe medical issues, the condition also causes millions of premature deaths each year. In fact, diabetes has become one of the leading causes of death around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that 1.6 million people died from diabetes in 2016. By the year 2045, approximately 629 million adults will have diabetes.
A large number of people affected by diabetes is a source of concern for global healthcare workers. Awareness, education, action, and research all can make a difference. In many cases, Type 2 diabetes is preventable.
Ways to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes:
Eliminate sugar and refined carbs
Work out regularly and avoid a sedentary lifestyle
Make water the primary beverage
Maintain a healthy weight
Quit smoking
Eat a high-fiber diet
Optimize Vitamin D levels
Take natural herbs, such as curcumin and berberine, that increase insulin sensitivity
Type 2 diabetes is not preventable for everyone. However, making healthy choices provides the best chance of not getting it. In the United States, 9 out of every 10 cases of diabetes can be avoided if the above lifestyle changes are implemented. Families, schools, workplaces, communities, and healthcare providers can all work together to make healthy choices easy.
While Type 1 diabetes is not as preventable, it can be managed well with insulin injections. Managing Type 1 diabetes might also require frequent blood sugar monitoring, eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight. Education is key to learning how to manage symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.
HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldDiabetesDay
To observe this day, many healthcare professionals, companies, celebrities, and politicians host a variety of activities to spread awareness about diabetes. To participate:
Learn more about both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by visiting www.worlddiabetes.org.
Find out how to get screened for diabetes.
Talk to your family and loved ones about diabetes prevention.
Encourage one another to make healthy choices.
Wear blue for diabetes awareness.
When sharing on social media, use #WorldDiabetesDay.

November 12th, World Pneumonia Day
WORLD PNEUMONIA DAY
On November 12th, World Pneumonia Day raises awareness for this deadly disease. It’s also a day that the world takes a stand and demands action in the fight against pneumonia.
Pneumonia is an infection that causes the air sacs in the lungs to become filled with fluid or pus. When this occurs, oxygen levels are reduced and breathing becomes very difficult. Each year, this infectious disease claims the lives of 2.5 million people throughout the world. This number includes 672,000 children. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 5. One of the leading risk factors for pneumonia is air pollution. Nearly one-third of all pneumonia deaths are attributed to polluted air. Deadly air pollution not only occurs outdoors but indoors as well.
Infants, children, and seniors over the age of 65 are at the greatest risk of dying from pneumonia. Children are more susceptible to getting pneumonia from indoor air pollution. Many developing countries cook with wood, charcoal, dung, and coal on open fires. All of these things cause indoor air pollution. Other things that pollute indoor air include tobacco smoke, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, asbestos, paint, mold, dust, and synthetic fragrances. Causes for outdoor air pollution include exhaust from vehicles and pollutants emitted by industries.
Pneumonia by the Numbers
In the United States, one million people get pneumonia each year. Pneumonia causes 400,000 hospitalizations. More than 20,000 people die each year from pneumonia in the U.S. Pneumonia is much more prevalent and more deadly in poorer countries. Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia are where some of the highest death rates of pneumonia occur. In 2017, more than half of all childhood deaths from pneumonia occurred in these five countries:
India
Nigeria
Pakistan
The Democratic Republic of Congo
Ethiopia
Both children and the elderly often require hospitalization when they get pneumonia. This is one reason that so many people in poorer countries die from pneumonia. These countries all have poor health care and those that live there cannot afford treatment for pneumonia. Despite the fact that pneumonia claims the life of a child every 50 seconds, it remains a neglected disease.
HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldPneumoniaDay
Healthcare organizations around the world hold events on this day to educate the general public about the causes of pneumonia and the dangers of this respiratory disease. Hospitals and healthcare workers urge people the get vaccinated against pneumonia. You can participate by donating to an organization that funds research for pneumonia. Learn what you can do to decrease outdoor and indoor air pollution.
Spread awareness for this day on social media with #WorldPneumoniaDay.
WORLD PNEUMONIA DAY HISTORY
A coalition of global health leaders launched the first World Pneumonia Day in 2009.

At the conclusion of WWII, Germany was divided into East and West Germany. The two sectors were divided by the American, British, and French-occupied sectors of West Germany and the Soviet Union controlled East Germany. In 1949, East Germany became its own country. The capital city of Berlin fell within the Soviet Zone of Occupation.
As might be expected, the living conditions between East and West Germany were very different. In capitalist West Germany, economic conditions thrived. The opposite happened in communist East Germany. In order to escape the harsh conditions of communist rule, many Germans defected to West Germany. By the late 1960s, East Germany had lost much of its population, which included a majority of its labor force. Between 1949 and 1961, nearly 3 million people left East Germany. Out of desperation, the Soviet Union threatened the use of nuclear weapons to overtake West Germany, including West Berlin.
On August 12-13, 1961 soldiers erected concrete posts and strung a barbed wire between East and West Berlin. This action took place in the middle of the night. When people in Berlin woke the next morning, they could not go to the other side of the city. Even if they had a job, or a family on the other side, Berliners couldn’t cross over. They were stuck on their side of Berlin for decades. Days later, soldiers installed a sturdier wall.

WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY
WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY
On November 8th, World Radiography Day marks the anniversary of the discovery of the X-ray. The day also recognizes the important role that radiographers and radiologists play in the healthcare industry.
The first thing a doctor does when a patient breaks a bone is order an X-ray. This kind of medical imaging allows healthcare professionals to see what is going on inside the body. The painless diagnostic test uses a form of electromagnetic radiation that passes through objects.
Besides bone fractures, X-rays also detect:
Tumors
Enlarged heart
Blood vessel blockages
Fluid in lungs
Dislocated joints
Internal infections
Osteoporosis
Tooth decay
Foreign objects in the body
The benefits of X-rays include being completely non-invasive and taking only a few minutes to complete. Doctors like X-rays because the results can be seen almost immediately. Radiographers perform X-rays and once the test is performed, the results are analyzed by a radiologist. The radiologist then passes that information to the doctor. In some instances, radiographers need to use other kinds of medical imaging tests to diagnose a problem. These might include a CT Scan, MRI, fluoroscopy, mammography, or ultrasound.
Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen, a German mechanical engineer, and physicist discovered X-rays in 1895. He received the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901 for his discovery. The Polish-born physicist Marie Curie helped advance the X-ray using radium, an element she discovered. In the early 1900s, hospitals were already using X-ray technology. By the 1930s, X-rays were a routine part of patient diagnostics. Today, around 3.6 million diagnostic tests that use radiation in medical imaging are performed each year. Up to 80 percent of diagnostic problems are resolved with the help of X-rays.
HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldRadiographyDay
On this day, radiographer associations and healthcare providers host events that educate the public about X-rays and radiation safety. Radiographers also hold conferences and seminars to share ideas and make improvements in their field. It’s also a day for global health organizations to advocate for the need to increase radiography access and improve quality in developing countries. To participate:
Thank a radiographer or radiologist for all that they do.
Learn more about radiation and how this energy works to produce an X-ray.
Read about Marie Curie and Raymond Vahan Damadian and their contributions to radiography.

WORLD URBANISM DAY On November 8th
WORLD URBANISM DAY
On November 8th, World Urbanism Day recognizes and promotes the role of planning and creating livable communities. The day is also known as World Town Planning Day.
The word urbanism describes how inhabitants of urban areas interact with the built environment. Urban areas are towns, cities, and other places with higher populations. The primary focus of urban planning is to make the community healthy and livable for its inhabitants. Urban planning also ensures orderly development.
The most livable and healthy communities share these common factors:
Provide residents with plenty of opportunities to enjoy a high quality of life.
Strive to preserve or improve its economy and the quality of its environment.
Desire to improve the health of its residents.
Provide a variety of housing options for its residents.
Include lots of areas for walking, biking, and being outdoors.
Make public transportation readily available and affordable for all who need it.
Contain schools, grocery stores, shopping malls, parks, recreational areas, and fitness facilities.
When all of these factors are present, societies are better able to cope with population growth and climate change.
Some of the world’s most healthy and livable cities include Osaka, Tokyo, Perth, Zurich, Geneva, Melbourne, and Brisbane. The city that tops the list in Auckland, New Zealand. Town planners in these cities must be doing a great job! On the other end of the spectrum, the least livable cities include Tripoli, Algiers, Dhaka, Port Moresby, and Lagos. The least livable city in the world is Damascus, Syria.
HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldUrbanismDay
Planning associations around the world organize educational events to help the public better understand the importance of urban planning. During such events, residents are encouraged to connect with public health networks and get involved in urban planning projects in their communities. To participate:
Develop ideas to improve things in your community, for example, better accessibility for the disabled or more walking paths.
Get involved in urban planning by going to city council and county commissioner meetings.
Read about influential urbanists, such as Jane Jacobs, Lewis Mumford, Robert Moses, and Naomi Klein.
Find out where your community ranks in healthy and livable cities.
Spread awareness for this day on social media with #WorldUrbanismDay.
WORLD URBANISM DAY HISTORY
The late Professor Carlos Maria Della Paolera of the University of Buenos Aires founded World Town Planning Day in 1949. He was also a civil engineer and a member of the national geography committee in Argentina. In later years, the day also became known as World Urbanism Day. Today more than 30 countries on 4 continents participate.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MEDICAL PHYSICS
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MEDICAL PHYSICS
Every year on November 7th, the International Day of Medical Physics raises awareness about the role that physics play regarding patient care. It’s also a day to acknowledge important medical physicists throughout history.
Physics is the science that studies matter, motion, and energy. It’s known as one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines. The main goal of physics is to study how the universe behaves. The study of physics is very beneficial to humans. Thanks to physics, we learn about how electricity, sound, gravity, inertia, and heat work. Medicine is another area in that physics benefits humans. Sometimes the use of medicine in physics is referred to as biomedical physics or applied physics in medicine.
One area in which physics greatly benefits medicine is radiology and nuclear medicine. Both of these areas of medicine allow for important diagnostic tests, such as MRI, CT scans, x-rays, and ultrasounds. These kinds of tests make it possible to see the inside of the body, which is invaluable for a proper diagnosis. Radiation therapy is another area of great importance as it helps in the treatment of cancer.
Medical physics has also helped further research, testing, and treatment in other areas of medicine. These areas include cardiology, neurophysiology, audiology, and physiological monitoring.
HOW TO OBSERVE #InternationalDayOfMedicalPhysics
Every year, medical physicists around the world celebrate this day with live webinars, educational seminars, and conferences. To participate:
