Gender Inequality Index by Country and World 1990-2021
This bar chart race shows the Gender Inequality Index by country and world from 1990 to 2021. The scale is from 0 to 1, where higher values indicates higher inequalities.
Gender inequality remains a pervasive issue across the globe, impacting social, economic, and political spheres. The UNDP's Gender Inequality Index is a groundbreaking tool that measures the disparities between men and women in three key dimensions: reproductive health, empowerment, and labor market participation/economic status. By understanding the GII, we can gain invaluable insights into the progress made, challenges faced, and the way forward towards gender equality.
REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, the first dimension of the GII, assesses maternal mortality rates and adolescent birth rates, reflecting the challenges women face during pregnancy and childbirth. This indicator highlights the urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure, access to family planning services, and comprehensive sexual education to ensure women's reproductive rights are protected.
EMPOWERMENT, the second dimension, focuses on women's participation in politics and decision-making roles, as well as their educational attainment. By analyzing women's representation in parliaments and their access to higher education, the GII exposes the persistent barriers that hinder women from achieving their full potential. Breaking these barriers requires addressing societal norms, promoting gender-responsive policies, and empowering women to pursue leadership positions.
The third dimension of the GII revolves around women's labor market participation and ECONOMIC STATUS. This indicator reveals disparities in employment rates and the type of work women engage in, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities and fair wages. Addressing gender stereotypes, promoting workplace inclusivity, and implementing policies that promote work-life balance are key to bridging this gap.
Now, you might be wondering about the significance of the GII and its impact on societies. The GII serves as a wake-up call, exposing the wide-ranging effects of gender inequality. It highlights that gender inequality not only infringes upon women's rights but also hampers overall development, economic growth, and social progress. Achieving gender equality is not just a matter of justice; it is essential for creating inclusive, thriving societies for everyone.
While progress has been made in certain areas, significant challenges persist. By examining the GII, policymakers, civil society, and individuals gain valuable insights that inform evidence-based strategies and interventions. Creating gender-responsive policies, ensuring access to quality education, promoting women's economic empowerment, and fostering an inclusive culture are key steps towards achieving gender equality.
In conclusion, the Gender Inequality Index, as presented in the UNDP Human Development Report, offers a comprehensive assessment of the status of gender inequality worldwide. By understanding the GII and its dimensions, we can collectively work towards dismantling barriers and fostering a society where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive.

Sanctions against Russia 2014-2023
This bar chart race shows the number of individual sanctions against Russia, from March 2014 to 24th of March 2023.
Please note that one person, company or others can be sanctioned by several authorities for same reason and same way. The numbers are shown monthly, and months without sanctions are skipped in the counters.
Sanctions against Russia are a set of economic, political, and diplomatic measures taken by other countries to punish Russia for its actions that violate international law or pose a threat to global stability. These measures aim to isolate Russia and put pressure on its government to change its behavior.
The targets of sanctions against Russia are typically Russian individuals, businesses, and government officials who are believed to be involved in activities that violate international law or threaten global security. This includes those who are responsible for Russia's annexation of Crimea, its support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine, its interference in the 2016 US presidential election, its involvement in the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in the UK, and the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Sanctions can take various forms, including freezing assets, banning travel and business dealings, restricting imports and exports, and limiting access to financial markets. These measures can have a significant impact on Russia's economy, leading to a decline in its GDP, a decrease in foreign investment, and a rise in inflation.
However, the effectiveness of sanctions in achieving their intended goals is a subject of debate among experts. Some argue that sanctions can be an effective tool to change the behavior of rogue nations and protect global security, while others claim that they often harm ordinary citizens and can lead to unintended consequences.

Rabies Deaths by Country and World since 1990
How many humans die from rabies?
This bar chart race shows the estimated number of human deaths from rabies, by country and world, from 1990 to 2019.
Rabies is a viral disease that is transmitted to humans and animals through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. The disease is caused by the rabies virus, which attacks the central nervous system and eventually leads to inflammation of the brain and death. Rabies is one of the deadliest diseases in the world, with most deaths in Asia and Africa.
Symptoms of rabies in humans typically appear within two to three months after exposure to the virus, but it can take longer. The first symptoms are flu-like, including fever, headache, and weakness. As the disease progresses, the patient may experience anxiety, confusion, and agitation. The patient may also experience hydrophobia, which is a fear of water due to painful spasms of the throat muscles. In later stages, the patient may experience seizures, paralysis, and eventually death.
Rabies is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, such as a dog, cat, or bat. It can also be transmitted through scratches or contact with the animal's saliva. The virus can survive outside the body for a short time, but it is quickly destroyed by sunlight, heat, and disinfectants.
Prevention of rabies is crucial since there is no cure once symptoms appear. Vaccination is the most effective method of preventing the disease in both humans and animals. In addition, it is essential to avoid contact with wild or stray animals and to seek medical attention immediately if you are bitten or scratched by an animal.
In many countries, including the United States, rabies vaccines are mandatory for domestic animals such as dogs and cats. If an animal that is not vaccinated bites a human, the animal may need to be quarantined or euthanized to prevent the spread of the disease.
Rabies deaths in humans are most common in countries where vaccination programs are not widespread, and stray dogs are prevalent. In these areas, children are often the most vulnerable, with nearly half of all rabies deaths occurring in children under the age of 15.
It is essential to remember that rabies is a preventable disease. By vaccinating domestic animals, avoiding contact with wild animals, and seeking medical attention immediately after being bitten or scratched, we can reduce the number of rabies deaths in humans.

BIOFUEL Energy Production by Country and World since 1990
This bar chart race shows annual biofuel energy production by country and world from 1990 to 2021, measured in terawatt-hours (TWh). The production includes both bioethanol and biodiesel.
Biofuels are a type of renewable energy that is produced from organic matter such as plants, crops, and animal waste. Unlike traditional fossil fuels, biofuels are sustainable and have a much lower impact on the environment.
Biofuels are produced through a process called bioenergy conversion. This process involves breaking down organic matter, such as sugar or starch, into a usable form of energy. The most common types of biofuels include ethanol, biodiesel, and biogas.
Ethanol is a type of alcohol that is produced by fermenting crops such as corn, sugarcane, and wheat. It can be used as a fuel additive to gasoline or as a standalone fuel in vehicles. Biodiesel, on the other hand, is made from vegetable oil or animal fat and can be used in diesel engines. Biogas is produced by the breakdown of organic matter in landfills, wastewater treatment plants, and other sources. It can be used to generate electricity, heat buildings, or fuel vehicles.
Biofuels have several benefits over traditional fossil fuels. For one, they are renewable, meaning that they can be produced continuously without depleting finite resources. They also produce much lower levels of greenhouse gases. Additionally, biofuels can be produced domestically, reducing reliance on foreign oil.
Despite these benefits, there are also some drawbacks to biofuels. The production of biofuels can compete with food production, which can drive up food prices and have negative impacts on food security in developing countries. Additionally, the production process can be energy-intensive, which can offset some of the environmental benefits.
Overall, biofuels offer a promising alternative to traditional fossil fuels. While there are still some challenges to overcome, continued research and development in this field could lead to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy future.

This bar chart race shows the estimated infections and infection fatality rate (IFR) by country and world, from January 1st to October 17th in 2022.
Estimated infections is not the same as number of people who have been infected. One individual can be infected twice or more.
Infection Fatality Rate (IFR) is calculated as accumulated confirmed deaths in percentage of accumulated estimated cases. In this case, a 14 day lag is used for death numbers. The death numbers do not take into account accumulations before 2022, and represents this year only.
