Can you still become a decent dancer if you’re very inflexible?

biggest concern and hesitation is my lack of flexibility through my hamstrings. They’ve always been extremely tight.

Is it still worth taking dance classes? Or will I just end up discouraged and frustrated?

Work on your flexibility like it is your job. Lack of flexibility really inhibits dance range of motion and range, variety. Of course you can be a dope dancer with a limited range but to take it to the next level you need to be flexible, strong, have endurance to really have full access to your vocabulary.

It takes practice. Have you tried to do yoga? I did yoga to improve my flexibility for dance. Does your dance teacher do warm ups at the start of your class? That is important too. My dance instructor would make the class to do stretch exercises twice a week instead of doing dance. It felt like a yoga class.

I want to add that you should Dance for the way it makes you feel, for the happiness and enjoyment of it, for the satisfaction of personal improvement and growth as your skill and artistry improves, not for the desire to have a viral youtube video, to be someone else, or just to pursue commercial interests.

Manage your expectations. Depending on your age, experience, body, and ability to practice (time + instruction + effort), you may be able obtain similar levels of ability to great dancers. Get rid of any defined outcome you are expecting from the dance class. If you spend money, invest time, and put yourself through this experience (that has now become a chore) for the sole purpose of achieving a unrealistic and imagined specific outcome then it would absolutely leave you discouraged and frustrated. At that point it also ceases to be about dancing.

So it comes down to why you want to take classes. If dance truly makes you happy and you want to improve for the sake of your improvement and passion for the activity of dancing or to be a better instructor then you should absolutely sign up
