Musician Reacts to The Beatles "Get Back" - YOKO was Innocent!
Here are my thoughts on the new "Get Back" Beatles documentary series on Disney+. It was directed by Peter Jackson of "The Lord of the Rings" fame. It's about 9 hours in total and follows the creative process of The Beatles through the final phase of their career together. What comes out is, I believe, the truest, most honest portrayal of the creative process ever committed to film. SPOILER ALERT!

Noisy WAH Repair - 1970s DeArmond 1802 Weeper Pedal
In this video, we'll look at a vintage DeArmond Model 1802 Weeper Wah Guitar Pedal sent to me for repair. The owner says he bought it on Reverb and can't get it to work. We'll figure out what the problem is and review the circuit, comparing it to wahs from other companies such as the Vox V847 and the Dunlop Crybaby. Finally, we'll demo the pedal through an amp I built using my PRS.

Electronics Restoration - Eico 950B MAGIC EYE TUBE Resistance-Capacitance-Comparator Bridge Tester
In this video, we'll repair and test a late 1950s vintage piece of electronics test equipment. This is an Eico 950B. It tests electrolytic capacitors, mica, poly, or paper "signal" capacitors, and it also tests resistors, and will allow comparisons via a bridge circuit between two components with the use of a Magic Eye tube. We'll recap it and test all the resistors for drift and then we'll discuss in depth how it works, and test some vintage capacitors to see how well various vintage cap types have held up.

Carl Perkins LOST 1967 Interview...UNEARTHED After More Than 50 YEARS!
Contained in this video is a previously lost interview with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Carl Perkins. It is taken from a 1/4" reel to reel tape that was purchased at a small town auction in Iowa and given to me by a channel viewer. In this interview, Carl talks about the biggest disappointment of his career and how he was ALMOST the first of the Sun Records alumni to break onto TV. He was scheduled to appear on the Perry Como Show and the Ed Sullivan Show in early 1956, but a terrible accident sidelined his plans. Had he done so, he would have beaten Elvis to TV and that might have changed the course of rock and roll history as we know it. In the future, I will publish more interviews from this tape which haven't seen the light of day in over 50 years! The Statler Brothers, The Carter Family, and Johnny Cash were all interviewed by Bobby Wootton (later changed to Bobby Wooten) a KAYO radio DJ in Seattle. They were all touring together at this time. The interviews were made at the Seattle Opera House on June 16th, 1967, and were meant to be played for the troops in Vietnam. They contain some really interesting stuff. Hope you enjoy!

Marshall 2203 Keeps Blowing Expensive 6550 Tubes!
I really hate to say it, but maybe some tube amps aren't practical or economical to keep repairing. Is this vintage 1980s Marshall JMP 2203 Lead Master Volume head one of them? I installed Sovtek 6550 tubes from CE Distribution, the wholesale arm of Antique Electronic Supply, aka TubesandMore.com, but they keep blowing up prematurely, despite biasing to 70% of max plate dissipation at idle. Then to top it off, they refused to replace the burnt out tube! The only solution is to bias much colder and rant to YouTube.

You Won't BELIEVE What this Viewer Just Sent Me!
This channel viewer went all out and sent me something enormous. HUGE thanks to Sig Haynie for sending me this! I'm blown away.
This drum set is a 1990s Mapex Mars Pro kit in two-tone blue burst. It's a 6-piece kit with maple and birch shells - very nice! Toms are 10-12-14-16. Bass is 22". Snare is 14". But the kicker is, he sent a total of 3 snares with it, including a piccolo snare and an early 70s Ludwig, a nice vintage Ludwig cymbal stand, and several very nice vintage Zildjian cymbals. I'm not sure how to date the vintage Zildjian cymbals by the stamps, so maybe some of you can help me in that.

What's a CHOKE? Is it necessary in a Guitar Amplifier?
In this video, which is the THIRD in our series on this 1959 Guild 66-J guitar amplifier, we will install a choke and change the rectifier tube from a 5Y3 to a GZ34 (5AR4). We'll talk generally about what a choke is and whether it's a benefit to have one in a guitar amplifier. We'll also look at how much a simple change of a rectifier type can affect the voltages inside your amplifier.

Nirvana's Nevermind Album Like You've Never Heard It Before - Electric Tooth Syndrome
I'm reposting this in honor of the 30th Anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind. This year also marks the 15th Anniversary of the completion of this tribute album by my band Electric Tooth Syndrome entitled "Whatever, Nevermind" which was finished in 2006. For this upload, I included a few pictures which were taken around the time of this recording and some pictures and short video clips of the recording process. This is the entire Nirvana Nevermind album remade, rearranged, rewritten, and completely re-imagined. Only the lyrics were left untouched. All music is completely different. Most time signatures, tempos, key signatures, melodies, and chord progressions have been altered or changed entirely. In short, while this is a Nirvana & Kurt Cobain tribute, it isn't a straight cover album in any sense. Hope you enjoy! Feel free to leave a review, good, bad, or indifferent.

The ORIGINAL Eric Clapton Blues Amp - 1964 Marshall JTM45 BLUESBREAKER (Repair, Analysis & Demo)
In this video, we'll look at a real historical HONEY of a guitar amplifier. This is NOT a reissue! This is an ORIGINAL 1964 Marshall JTM45 Super Tremolo Amplifier Model 1962, known affectionately as the "Bluesbreaker" after the John Mayall album "Blues Breakers", on which a young Eric Clapton played. It's always nice for me to see amps like this because so few of them exist, and also because so few of them exist in my part of the world.
The owner of this amp is also the owner of the Fender Champ I recently serviced. We sent the original speaker in that amp off for a recone at The Speaker Workshop due to a rubbing voice coil. While picking that amp up, he decided to bring along his Bluesbreaker, which has been sitting for over a year untouched, due to a badly punctured Celestion G12 T731 speaker, which apparently came originally in a Selmer amp? We are not sure. In this case, he wanted to avoid a recone if possible, so I'll show you how to fix a speaker puncture using a hot glue gun and we'll open up the amp and examine the guts. Then we'll plug it in and jam with some Glen Miller custom korina Gibson Futura and Flying V guitars.
This is the WORST speaker puncture I've ever attempted to fix using this hot glue method. If you DO need a recone on a vintage speaker, I highly recommend The Speaker Workshop in Fort Wayne, Indiana: http://bit.ly/RECONE

Opening a Fuzzy Can of WHOOPASS! - 70's Muff Fuzz Restoration and Clone
This is two videos for the price of one. First, we'll repair and restore a c.1977 Electro-Harmonix Muff Fuzz 1458 dual op amp based guitar effects pedal. This one is missing its back panel, so we'll have to make one for it. Then we'll trace the circuit and, using an identical Texas Instruments MC1458P chip from my parts stash, clone another Muff Fuzz...but this one will be better than the old one because it'll have a 9V DC power jack and a footswitch. Oh, and we'll build it inside of a Del Monte steel vegetable can and demo it with my Zio Meteora guitar and a 1959 Guild 66-J Modified amp.
NOTES: the germanium diodes in the original version were replaced in the clone with silicon type. The final traced schematic is show near the end of the video if you're looking to build this pedal using this 1458 op amp. There are schematics for transistor versions available online, and another version which uses a 4558 dual op amp.

Finally...a Guitar Amp with BALLS
As promised, here is a follow-up video to the recent epic mod video I did on the 1959 Guild 66-J Masteramp. See that video here: https://youtu.be/CJenYLb5JjY
In this one, we'll talk about how some vintage amps had power transformers that were under spec, so they won't provide enough voltage to the power tubes to bias to full dissipation. We'll also look at the best places to ground a virtual center tap to elevate heaters. In this case, I found it was the phase inverter cathode, not the output tube cathodes.

This amp was badged as "Guild Masteramp" Model 66-J originally, but who really made it? We'll explore the history of the amp and modify it to add some modern features like effects loop and cascaded gain stage that expand the tonal range and usefulness for live and recording. Was this amp made by Multivox amps in New York or Ampeg of New Jersey? Or maybe both?

Goodbye Don Everly | Everly Brothers Tribute
Some rock and roll deaths deserve a mention from me, and some deserve a tribute. This is a tribute to one of the true pillars of early rock and roll, Don Everly - a man who, along with his brother, Phil, put Western Kentucky on the map and made vocal harmonies a staple of the genre long before The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel were even thought of. In fact, those vocal groups probably owe their existence to the Everly Brothers. Paul Simon cited them as a main influence, and the duo has performed Everly songs live, and even invited Don and Phil onstage at concerts to pay tribute. May they both rock in peace and may their voices hold the pediment of heaven aloft.

1965 GIBSON FALCON MODS - FACE MELTING Tone!
In this video we'll follow the service of a vintage 1965 Gibson GA19-RVT Falcon tube guitar amplifier. The owner wanted a full service and a check of the non-working reverb. He also wanted me to modify the amp by removing the "tone-sucking network" also known as the Sprague couplet. This is a tone-shaping R/C network that shapes the tone in these amps to keep them clean with Gibson style humbuckers, but also robs the amp of gain and tone. We'll remove this network and work on beefing up the weak reverb as much as we can. At the end, we'll demo the amp and show why these are some of the most RIPPING sleeper amps of the 1960s.
