This amp was part of the Fender amplifier series called the "Pawnshop Series". This series included the Ramparte, the Vaporizer, the Greta, and the amp you see here - the EXCELSIOR! It came to me cooking tubes and being generally rude, nasty, and sounding like a WAP. It was like the Cardi B of amplifiers. In this video, we'll troubleshoot and repair what's ailing it, namely some red plating power tubes, then we'll demo it with a PRS and a Stratocaster. Along the way, I'll show you some of the good and bad aspects of this model and we'll perform a couple tiny mods and rebias for early breakup. In a recent video, we looked at a 1980s Mesa-Boogie Mark IIB which is owned by Greg Martin of The Kentucky Headhunters. Some commenters pointed out that the amp had received a popular factory mod sometime later which is commonly called the "Effects Loop Mod" or the "Mark IIB+" mod, often performed by Mike Bendinelli (Mike B.). The mod involved moving the effects loop to a different location in the circuit, converting a cathode follower to an extra gain stage, and adding a "post effects level" which acts as a global Master Volume. In this video, we'll take a look at Kentucky Headhunters guitarist Greg Martin's early 1980s Mesa Mark IIB 60W combo. This one has several factory options such as the Graphic EQ board and Reverb. He's complaining it's too noisy. We'll try to determine why and along the way, we will discuss why even vintage Mesa amps are so hard to work on and why many techs don't like taking them in for repair. This one appears to have also been modded at the factory (perhaps later?) from the typical Mark IIB schematic with a post effects level control which operates like an overall Master Volume for the preamp. In the end, we will substitute a 12AU7 for the 12AX7 in the V1 position and demonstrate how that has little effect on the amount of overdrive these amps can produce. Hard rock lead tone is one thing they do VERY well. Since publishing this video, a viewer has alerted me to the fact that this example has a popular factory mod done by Mike Bendenelli "Mike B" at Mesa. It includes the post effects level control on the back panel and a movement of the effects send and return from V2A cathode follower to another point. This load box is useful in allowing you to run a signal into an amp without fear of damage to the output transformer or tubes while testing, troubleshooting, or using the line out jack to a recording device, DAW, or mixer. This design allows the impedance to switch between 8 and 16 ohms at 200W and 100W respectively. A viewer of the channel recently alerted me to a new old stock, mint condition case for my 1967 Hofner G459VTZ Super Beatle 6-string hollowbody violin guitar that was being sold online. It inspired me to drag it out of storage and do some much needed work on it. We'll tackle some fretwork, shim the neck, restring, and demo it. We'll also talk about the history of these rare and fascinating models. The 459 model series, included the 459, 459TZ, and 459 VTZ. They were introduced in 1967 and featured some of the earliest active circuitry for electric guitar. The active circuit, which runs off a 9-volt battery, has a Treble Boost and Fuzz built in. Fuzzy psychedelic rock was all the rage in 1967, and in that respect, the Hofner 459 models should have been a success. But the soaring high price tag and stiff competition from better positioned American brands like Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, and Rickenbacker meant the models didn't sell well and were discontinued after a few short years. In this video, we'll go through an already modded, non-functioning Valve Junior Combo and see what mods were done before us, and then we'll modify it differently in the hopes of getting a nice blues tone out of it. First we'll troubleshoot it and see what's working and what's not working. At the end of the video, we'll demo the tone with my Big D Bourbon Barrel Telecaster. Because they are cheap, these amps are a good place to start cutting your teeth on electronics. In this video we'll follow the repair, maintenance, and makeover of a 1972 Ovation Breadwinner. This is the same model used by Ace Frehley on the recording of the first KISS album. It was also used by the likes of Marc Bolan of T-Rex, Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA, and David Cassidy of The Partridge Family. This one belongs to Matthew Melton, current guitarist, singer, and songwriter for Dream Machine, formerly of Warm Soda and Bare Wires. This one would need a complete rewire, including a single 1970s Dimarzio Dual Sound Super Distortion pickup to replace the original single coil toroidal dual pickup configuration. My sister and her daughter came up to visit recently. My niece, Katie, had bought this 1930s Supertone console radio for $45 and brought it along for me to look at. Overall condition is good. Chassis was very CLEAN and original inside. The cabinet had a few minor issues, but was good overall. The speaker is a c.1929 Jensen Concert Series D-7 Electrodynamic. BEAUTIFUL original speaker! In this video, we'll give Katie her first electronics lesson and service this old thing back to life.
