Despite his many calls for peace in Ukraine and his overt words of support on social media for the Ukrainian people, 20-year-old Russian piano prodigy Alexander Malofeev is canceled by the ultra woke mob at the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. This has become probably the most bizarre story of the guitar world in the past year. This underscores the hazards and importance of provenance in the guitar market and in collecting rock and roll memorabilia in general. It is also a cautionary tale of what can happen when the love of music or an artist turns into a lust for money. In this video, we will convert a vintage Japanese Fanon Masco TUBE reel to reel tape machine into a smoking hot little guitar amp. Along the way, I'll show you how to install an isolation transformer in a series filament amplifier to make it safe and reduce hum, and also we'll troubleshoot and modify the circuit. Finally, we'll demo the modified tape machine with my Paul Reed Smith CE24 and learn why putting a little effort into a vintage piece of gear like this can reward you with a GREAT tone for very little money invested. In two previous videos I shared the story of a reel to reel tape that found its way to me after more than 50 years of obscurity. The tape, which was purchased at an estate sale in a small Iowa town in the late 80s, was given to me two years ago by a fan of my channel. It was created backstage at a 1967 Johnny Cash concert in Seattle, Washington by KAYO radio DJ Bobby Wootten and contains lost interviews with some of the biggest and most influential stars of the 20th Century. It was created to be aired over Armed Forces Radio to the troops in Vietnam. In this video, we will present interviews with two Country Music Hall of Fame alumni, The Statler Brothers and The Carter Family, as they existed in 1967 – with Mother Maybelle Carter and her daughters. Maybelle, of course, along with Sara and AP Carter, was there at the so-called “Big Bang of Country Music” recording sessions in Bristol, Tennessee in 1927, the same sessions that also launched the career of Jimmie Rodgers. Maybelle and her Gibson L5 archtop provided the rhythmic pulse at the very heart of this new popular musical form, and The Carter Family are rightly recognized as some of the very first popular music super stars, forging their career at a time when ad-supported radio airplay and record sales were brand new industries. Maybelle Carter's influence on Western popular music cannot possibly be overstated, and to have an interview with her on this tape is particularly cool. So we'll begin with a short interview with the Statler Brothers before moving on to The Carter Family. I hope you enjoy! Isaiah Nightingale is not exactly what one would call a household name in guitar history. Born in 1836, he appears to have spent much of his working life in the burgeoning Ohio River settlement of Evansville, Indiana, showing up in city directories as a stone cutter and foreman at the Henry H. Uhlhorn Stone Works from 1866 until the time of his death at age 58. A career stone mason might seem like an odd candidate for a musical instrument patent holder, nevertheless on October 7, 1892, Nightingale filed a US patent application for a guitar improvement that seems just as titillating and novel today as it must have seemed in its own time. Described as an “ATTACHMENT FOR GUITARS, MANDOLINS, ZITHERS, OR OTHER STRINGED INSTRUMENTS”, this “new and useful improvement” was described in the patent, which reads: “To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, ISAIAH NIGHTINGALE, of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Guitars, Mandolins, Zithers, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description... My invention relates to an improved attachment for guitars, mandolins, zithers, and like stringed, musical instruments, by means of which the music is much improved in tone and strength; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim. Within the [body of the instrument], is a supplemental sound board (#2), extending from end to end, and from side to side of the interior of the [body], and secured at a point intermediate between the bottom of the case and the sound board (#4). (#3) represents a tube secured on the upper side of the supplemental sound-board, and preferably immediately beneath the strings and openings (5) in the sound-board (4) of the instrument. The sound-board and tube may be constructed of wood, metal, or any other suitable material, and may, if desired, be arranged in any other suitable shape or form, but the arrangement shown and described is preferred by me. An attachment made in accordance with my invention besides strengthening the instrument, adds very materially to the quality of the music, making the tone much stronger and sweeter. I claim as my invention- In a guitar, mandolin, or other stringed, musical instrument, a supplemental soundboard, with a tube thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. ISAIAH NIGHTINGALE.” Nightingale's patent was granted on March 28th, 1893. He would die the following year of pneumonia. His brother, Charles, a luthier and salesman for a local music store, Harding & Miller Music Company, would later secure a design patent for a mandolin pickguard in the shape of a lyre. His patent was granted in 1900 and The Nightingale Guitar and Mandolin Company was born. In 1902, it was relocated, possibly due to a fire in its Main Street building, and by 1904, was no longer listed in the city directory. So, it would seem that one brother's dreams of improving the guitar by adding a second soundboard were cut short by his untimely death, so his brother Charles, inspired by his memory and imagination, created The Nightingale Company guitar in his memory. Although the company was short-lived, the few extant instruments that remain tantalize us with questions of what might have been. In a recent video, I shared the story of a reel to reel tape that found its way into my possession a couple years back. It had been unearthed quite by accident at an estate sale in in a small town in Iowa in the 1980s, and contained lost interviews from some of the biggest music stars of the 20th Century. In the first video of this series, we listened to an interview of the late, great Carl Perkins – writer of “Blue Suede Shoes” and original Sun Recording artist. If you have not seen that video, I encourage you to click the link in the upper right hand corner of your screen and check it out first. In this video, we will listen to the lost interview of the Man in Black himself...Johnny Cash. But let me warn you, what you're about to hear may not conform to your current idea of what Johnny was all about. The modern caricature of Cash as a friend to the hippy or anti-war “dove with claws” gets thoroughly challenged here. A little back story for those of you who did not see the first video in the series... The interviews on this tape, which to my knowledge have not been heard by anyone in over 50 years, were recorded backstage at a June 1967 concert in Seattle, Washington by Bobby Wootton, a Seattle radio DJ. Bobby, like Johnny, was a native of Arkansas. He had a deep timbre to his voice and a Southern Arkansas drawl, so the similarities of his voice to Johnny's are uncanny – to the point that, at times it can be difficult telling whether it's Bobby or Johnny talking. At the time of this recording, Bobby's son was serving in Vietnam and the interviews were made to be broadcast for the troops on Armed Forces radio. America was in the midst of a political divide over the war, and many protests on the home front included the burning of US flags and vitriol toward returning US soldiers. The interview covers these topics, and Johnny pulls no punches in his comments on the anti-war protesters. This is NOT the Johnny Cash as depicted in the recent Netflix documentary “Tricky Dick and the Man in Black”. In this documentary, which culminates with Johnny's 1970 White House performance, he is depicted as walking an a-political line and not taking sides or speaking out on the social upheavals of the day until after his 1969 concert tour of Vietnam, whereafter he became an opponent of the War. This interview challenges the notion that Cash was a fence-sitter on the subject of the War, which is something the “Tricky Dick” documentary intentionally or unintentionally whitewashed. Also of interest in this interview, Johnny talks at length about his recent drug arrest and his affinity for one June Carter, who was not yet his wife. In this video we'll diagnose and repair an amp which many thought had legendary rock and roll connections. This is an Orpheum labeled Valco amplifier, but as we will discover, it is truly a Supro Model 24 (S6424) underneath, an amp that for many years was assumed to be the amp that Jimmy Page used on the first Led Zeppelin album. We now know definitively that this is not the true Zep amp, so we will examine the evidence. Also, we will talk about replacement tubes for the fabled 6973 which power this amp. The 6cz5 is considered by many to be the best drop-in replacement, but is it truly a drop in substitution, or are modifications necessary? We will also talk a bit about the importance of having the appropriate speaker for your vintage amp. This one originally came with a Jensen C12Q, but that has been replaced with a Realistic speaker made by Utah. We'll discuss why this speaker isn't ideal for this amp. My step dad and I volunteered for disaster relief efforts in Dawson Springs, Kentucky after the unprecedented historic tornado. Mayfield has gotten the bulk of media attention but the damage path is over 200 miles long. This was our experience driving in to volunteer and what we witnessed in the Dawson Springs Elementary School where donations were being accepted. All of this was from people all over the region. We didn’t see federal or FEMA personnel all day. This was all local and regional people pulling together and it was inspiring to witness. God bless the people of Dawson Springs.
