NASA releases video of falling into supermassive black hole
The Goddard Space Flight Center has used advanced computer modeling to show what happens as you fall towards a supermassive black hole.
As you approach the black hole, you first notice the photon disk, particles of light in orbit, distorted, and stretched. Next, you fall further through rings of light and oblivion as you pass through the light that barely escaped the black hole, but you will not. You reach the event horizon, the great boundary between where things can escape and things cannot. However, the outside universe has one cruel trick left: as you fall further, the sky appears to recede, and it will do so forever, a trick of relativity as you approach light speed. You are still falling, and that’s all you’ll ever do.
It’s often said that the event horizon is the boundary after which the gravity of the black hole is so strong that not even light can escape. That undersells the gravity of the situation. Down is down. Left and right are down. Up is also down. From now on, space itself flows inexorably towards the singularity and you are along for the ride.
You have only microseconds left to live, but from your point of view, every waking moment is another life age of the universe. Past, present, and future all mingle around you. But your destination is fixed: the singularity, where gravity is infinite, and all of space-time is compressed to a single point. No one really knows what this place looks like. Maybe it’s the back of a bookcase.

Emergency crew rescues woman from 54-storey ledge
The NYPD had to act fast when they received a call about a distraught woman clinging to a ledge, 54 storeys up. Their Emergency Service Unit (ESU) sprang into action to save the woman, with bodycam footage capturing the death-defying moves they pulled off in order to get her to safety.
Initially prevented from reaching the woman by a glass barrier, the crew used safety ropes to get over the partition and reach the woman, who had reportedly been preparing to jump. They lifted her over the barrier into the arms of waiting officers. The woman was taken to the hospital, where she is receiving treatment.

U.S. Air Force shows off new AI fighter jet
The US Air Force has unveiled its latest generation of pilots: no one. An experimental F-16 fighter jet, dubbed the X-62, has been shown off to the press that can be flown entirely by artificial intelligence, proving that not even elite test pilots are safe from losing their jobs. It’s early days yet. Colonel James Valpiani, Test Pilot School Commandant, explained that ‘the X-62 has one purpose, which is to advance the state of machine learning... This aircraft really allows us to take relatively immature machine learning tools and agents and place them airborne. And to do that in a safe manner.’ However, it’s not clear exactly what these ‘tools’ entail, and how much control the AI truly has.

River of millipedes sparks panic in Taiwan
Tour guides in the Hsüeh-Pa National Park, Taiwan were baffled, nauseated and terrified by what can only be described as a river of millipedes grossly flowing down the park. Despite its impressive length, it was a nimble navigator – the river stretched for 50 horrible meters, and spanned four meters in width, writhing and wriggling and being impossibly weird for those 200 square meters. The guide was confused, but ultimately came to the conclusion that something extremely bad was going to happen, possibly involving an unholy amount of millipedes.
Cue a viral video, and a mass panic, with millions assuming the million ’pedes were a portent of squiggly doom. So far, the millipedes have failed to predict the end of the world, something that Taiwanese officials were keen to point out as they tried, like everyone else, to distance themselves from the river of millipedes. Rumors that the millipedes were fleeing a potential earthquake spread almost as fast as the millipedes themselves, but the park quashed the rumors immediately and reprimanded their tour guide for not understanding deep millipede lore. They pointed out that a) millipedes do not have magic earthquake sensing powers, despite what TikTokers think, and that b) they just do this sometimes, migrating en masse. Like birds flying south for the winter, except not flying, and having up to a thousand legs.

California mocked over ‘billion-dollar’ 0.3-mile bridge that goes nowhere
Back in 2008, the Golden State was excited to announce the launch of its publicly funded ‘world-class’ high-speed rail system that would connect Los Angeles to San Francisco.
Despite initial funding being approved nearly two decades ago, construction is still in the earliest stage and is expected to cost over $100 billion in total.
Yet, the lack of achievement didn’t stop the California High-Speed Rail Authority from praising itself when it recently publicized one of the completed sections of construction, which was finished in 2018 and cost $1 billion on its own.
It didn’t take long for online critics to notice and ridicule this construction milestone, with Elon Musk and Dogecoin creator Billy Markus ripping the state authority for boasting about building a 'bridge to nowhere.’
‘It takes about 5 minutes to walk 1600 feet so a high speed rail for that is a really big deal. California is so competent,’ the Dogecoin creator Billy Markus wrote on X.

Hong Kong police foil jewelry heist in 17 seconds
A gang of would-be thieves attempted a daring jewelry store heist in downtown Hong Kong but were foiled in literally 17 seconds. The gang pulled up outside the store in the busy Tsim Sha Tsui tourist district, got out of their car nonchalantly dressed almost entirely in black except for the one in white (maybe his thief’s garb was in the wash), and casually walked into the store in broad daylight in front of several dozen eyewitnesses. The five men were armed with traditional precision jewelry stealing equipment: three sledgehammers, two machetes, and a used shopping bag. They immediately began the delicate operation of mildly damaging some cabinets with the hammers, while the guys with the machetes just sort of stood there.
17 seconds later, their daring plot was foiled as several armed police entered the store with their own precision anti-thieving weapons: guns. According to the police report, one of the thieves received a slight scratch during the arrest. Three of the men were found with documents showing they were asylum seekers, and the other two are suspected of being illegal immigrants.
