David Bowie on 'The Man Who Sold the World'
In an interview, Bowie said: 'It’s a very sad rendition, of course, because it’s so tied up in life and death. So, it takes on all these different shades for me. Because I also remember, fairly clearly, my state of mind when I was actually writing it, which was, I guess… as near to a mystical state as a nineteen-year-old can get into (laughs). And, I remember it was at a time when I was sort of studying Buddhism, for my fifteen minutes of Buddhism. So, it’s interesting that it changed, it really had two mystical states, the time that I wrote it and recorded it, and the time that [Kurt Cobain] wrote it (laughs) ah, when he wrote it again, when he recorded it, and the things that led up to his end after that. So, I guess it still retains, for me, a sense of the mystical.
I was simply blown away when I found out that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and I always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering ‘Man Who Sold The World.’ It was a good straightforward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been nice to have worked with him, but just talking would have been real cool.
The Man Who Sold the World Nirvana Cover
In his journals, Kurt Cobain ranked the album The Man Who Sold the World at number 45 in his top 50 albums. Nirvana recorded a live version of The Man Who Sold the World during an MTV Unplugged appearance and included it on their MTV Unplugged in New York album.

Eric Clapton Tears in Heaven Lyrics
Would you know my name?
If I saw you in heaven
Would it be the same?
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong
And carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven
Would you hold my hand?
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand?
If I saw you in heaven
I'll find my way
Through night and day
'Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven
Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please
Beyond the door
There's peace, I'm sure
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven
Would you know my name?
If I saw you in heaven
Would you be the same?
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong
And carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Eric Clapton Tears in Heaven Songfacts
"Tears in Heaven" is a song by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings, written about the death of Clapton's four-year-old son, Conor. 'Tears in Heaven' appeared on the 1991 'Rush' film soundtrack. In 1992, Eric Clapton performed Tears in Heaven in front of an audience at Bray Studios, Berkshire, England for MTV Unplugged, with the 'Tears in Heaven' recording appearing on his Unplugged album.
Clapton wrote Tears in Heaven with Will Jennings, who has written many famous songs from movies, including "Up Where We Belong" from An Officer And A Gentleman and "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic.
Jennings told Songfacts: "Eric and I were engaged to write a song for a movie called Rush. We wrote a song called 'Help Me Up' for the end of the movie... then Eric saw another place in the movie for a song and he said to me, 'I want to write a song about my boy.' Eric had the first verse of the song written, which, to me, is all the song, but he wanted me to write the rest of the verse lines and the release, even though I told him that it was so personal he should write everything himself. He told me that he had admired the work I did with Steve Winwood and finally there was nothing else but do to as he requested, despite the sensitivity of the subject. This is a song so personal and so sad that it is unique in my experience of writing songs."
"Tears in Heaven" is Clapton's best-selling single in the United States. With more than 2,800,000 copies sold, Tears in Heaven remains one of the best-selling pop singles of the 1990s.

The Who Pinball Wizard Lyrics
Ever since I was a young boy
I've played the silver ball
From Soho down to Brighton
I must have played them all
But I ain't seen nothing like him
In any amusement hall
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball!
He stands like a statue
Becomes part of the machine
Feeling all the bumpers
Always playing clean
Plays by intuition
The digit counters fall
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball!
He's a pinball wizard
There has to be a twist
A pinball wizard's got such a supple wrist
'How do you think he does it?
I don't know
What makes him so good?'
Ain't got no distractions
Can't hear no buzzers and bells
Don't see no lights a-flashin'
Plays by sense of smell
Always gets the replay
Never seen him fall
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball!
I thought I was The Bally table king
But I just handed my pinball crown to him
Even on my favorite table
He can beat my best
His disciples lead him in
And he just does the rest
He's got crazy flipper fingers
Never seen him fall
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball!

Celebration Day by Led Zeppelin Lyrics
Her face is cracked from smiling, all the fears that she's been hiding,
And it seems pretty soon everybody's gonna know.
And her voice is sore from shouting, cheering winners who are losing,
And she worries if their days are few and soon they'll have to go.
My, my, my, I'm so happy, I'm gonna join the band,
We are gonna dance and sing in celebration, We are in the promised land.
She hears them talk of new ways to protect the home she lives in,
Then she wonders what it's all about when they break down the door.
Her name is Brown or White or Black, you know her very well,
You hear her cries of mercy as the winners toll the bell.
There is a train that leaves the station heading for your destination,
But the price you pay to nowhere has increased a dollar more.
Yes, it has!
And if you walk you're gonna get there though it takes a little longer,
And when you see it in the distance you will wring your hands and moan.
Celebration Day by Led Zeppelin Tempo

Led Zeppelin III (Album) Song facts
Led Zeppelin III is the third studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, released in 1970. Led Zeppelin III showed more of a progression for the first two Led Zeppelin albums from straightforward rock towards folk and acoustic music. While hard rock influences were still present, such as on "Immigrant Song", acoustic-based songs such as "Gallows Pole" and "That's the Way" showed Led Zeppelin were capable of playing different styles successfully. The acoustic material developed from a songwriting session between Plant and Page at Bron-Yr-Aur cottage in Wales, which influenced the musical direction.
Although critics were typically confused over the change in musical style and gave the album a mixed response, Led Zeppelin III has since been acknowledged as representing an important milestone in the band's history and a turning point in their music.

Eagles Hotel California Song Facts
"Hotel California" is the title track from the Eagles' album of the same name and was released in February 1977. Writing credits for Hotel California are shared by Don Felder (music), Don Henley, and Glenn Frey (lyrics). Joe Walsh came up with the dual-guitar descending arpeggio part that ends 'Hotel California'. The Eagles' original recording of 'Hotel California' features Henley singing the lead vocals, and concludes with an electric guitar solo performed by both Walsh and Felder, in which they both take turns of playing lead before harmonizing and playing the aforementioned arpeggio towards the 'Hotel California' fade out.
'Hotel California' by Eagles is about materialism and excess. California is used as the setting, but Hotel California could relate to anywhere in America.
Felder says the Eagles group recorded Hotel California about a year after he did the original Hotel California demo, and in the Hotel California session, he started to improvise the guitar part at the end. Henley stopped him and demanded that he do it exactly like the Hotel California demo.

Green Day "Good Riddance" [Time of Your Life] Lyrics
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life

Green Day "Good Riddance" [Time of Your Life] Songfacts
"Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" (or "Time of Your Life (Good Riddance)") is a song by American rock band Green Day, released in December 1997 as the second single from their fifth studio album, Nimrod. Although different from Green Day's usual sound, "Good Riddance" [Time of Your Life] one of Green Day's most popular songs. "Good Riddance" has also become a staple of Green Day's concerts and is usually played as the final song in Green Day's live shows.
Billie Joe Armstrong wrote "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" in 1993 about his girlfriend named Amanda who moved to Ecuador, naming the song "Good Riddance" to show his anger towards her.
An early version of "Good Riddance" (different key, faster tempo, & sparer arrangement) appeared as a B-side to the European single for "Brain Stew/Jaded".
When the time came to record Nimrod, Armstrong decided to record the "Good Riddance" again, and producer Rob Cavallo suggested to add strings to the track. He sent the band to play foosball in another room while he recorded the strings, which took "like fifteen, twenty minutes, maybe a half an hour at the most." Cavallo reflected on his decision to add the strings "I knew we had done the right thing. It was a hit the second I heard it."
In comparison to previous Green Day material, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" features more mellow, contemplative lyrics with acoustic music.

[Key of 'G' Major] 'G, 'Cadd9', 'D', 'Em'.
With the alternate ‘G’ chord voicing, the third and fourth fingers fret the top two strings, and they will remain ‘anchored’ there throughout the entire arrangement of 'Good Riddance/Time of Your Life'. Doing so will keep the fretting hand steady and in position throughout the entire song. Try not to strum the first ‘top’ string so much to avoid having the chords sounding too ‘bright’.

The Beatles Blackbird Song Facts
"Blackbird" by the Beatles was recorded June 11, 1968 at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London, with George Martin as the producer and Geoff Emerick as the audio engineer. "Blackbird" is a solo performance with Paul McCartney playing a Martin D 28 acoustic guitar.
Aside form the 'Blackbird" sound effect, only three sounds were recorded on the original Beatles 'Blackbird' track: Paul McCartney's voice, Paul McCartney's guitar, and a tapping that keeps time on the left channel. This tapping "has been incorrectly identified as a metronome in the past," according to engineer Geoff Emerick, who says it is actually the sound of Paul tapping his foot. McCartney also said the same in The Beatles' Anthology documentary. Emerick recalled Paul's foot-taps, presumably as being mic'd up separately. Footage included in the bonus content on disc two of the 2009 remaster of the album shows McCartney tapping both his feet alternately while performing the song.
It has been said the guitar accompaniment for Blackbird was inspired by Bach's Bourrée in E minor for lute. Was it Bouree in E Minor? Or possibly this that inspired McCartney to write Blackbird:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow_Bb...
The mono version of the Beatles Blackbird contains the bird sounds a few seconds earlier than the stereo recording, and was originally issued on a mono incarnation of The Beatles (since issued as part of The Beatles in Mono CD box set).
Great Cover Versions of "Blackbird" by the Beatles
Crosby, Stills, & Nash recorded an acoustic cover version the Beatles "Blackbird" sessions for the "Crosby, Stills, & Nash" album. This cover version of "Blackbird" appears on the Crosby, Stills & Nash 1991 box set. They performed 'Blackbird" often in concert, including Woodstock in 1969, and a live version appeared in 2014 on the CSNY 1974 album.
Sarah McLachlan performed an acoustic cover version of the Beatles Blackbird on 'I am Sam', a soundtrack made up entirely of Beatles covers.

Bob Marley Redemption Song Lyrics
Old pirates, yes, they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our mind
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever had

Bob Marley "Redemption Song" Songfacts
"Redemption Song" is a song by Jamaican singer Bob Marley. It is the final track on Bob Marley and the Wailers' twelfth album, Uprising, produced by Chris Blackwell and released by Island Records. "Redemption Song" is considered one of Bob Marley's greatest works. Some key lyrics form 'Redemption Song" derived from a speech given by the Pan-Africanist orator Marcus Garvey titled "The Work That Has Been Done."
Garvey's 1923 book The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey contains this preface, which is likely where Marley got the idea for "Redemption," which he used in the title: "Dedicated to the true and loyal members of the Universal Negro Improvement Association in the cause of African redemption."
At the time he wrote the song, circa 1979, Bob Marley had been diagnosed with the cancer in his toe that took his life a couple of years later.
Unlike most of Bob Marley's other tracks, "Redemption Song" is strictly a solo acoustic recording, consisting of his singing and playing an acoustic guitar, without accompaniment.
Redemption Song is much more of a folk song than a reggae number. Very unusual for Marley, 'Redemption Song" features just his voice accompanied by his acoustic guitar. Marley first recorded Redemption Song with his group The Wailers, but his producer Chris Blackwell suggested he try a solo acoustic version, and that's what stuck.

According to Rita Marley, "...he was already secretly in a lot of pain and dealt with his own mortality, a feature that is clearly apparent in the album, particularly in this song."

Bob Marley Redemption Song Lyrics
Old pirates, yes, they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our mind
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever had
Redemption songs
All I ever had
Redemption songs

Brown Eyed Girl Lyrics
Hey where did we go
Days when the rains came
Down in the hollow
Playin' a new game
Laughing and a running hey, hey
Skipping and a jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our hearts a thumpin' and you
My brown eyed girl
You're my brown eyed girl
Whatever happened
To Tuesday and so slow
Going down the old mine
With a transistor radio
Standing in the sunlight laughing
Hiding behind a rainbow's wall
Slipping and sliding
All along the water fall, with you
My brown eyed girl
You're my brown eyed girl
Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
Just like that
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da
So hard to find my way
Now that I'm all on my own
I saw you just the other day
My how you have grown
Cast my memory back there, Lord
Sometime I'm overcome thinking 'bout
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium with you
My brown eyed girl
You're my brown eyed girl
Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da (lying in the green grass)
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da (bit, bit, bit, bit, bit, bit)
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da (sha la la la la la)
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da

"The House of the Rising Sun" Songfacts
“The House of the Rising Sun” was a traditional folk ballad about a person’s life going wrong in New Orleans, with different versions using various narratives with the same themes.
Many believe that this points out to a brother in New Orleans, where the song was supposedly named after the occupant Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant, which meant Rising Sun in French.
"The House of the Rising Sun" follows a traditional English ballad arrangement but became a phenomenon as an American folk song. "House of the Rising Sun" was first recorded by Texas Alexander in the 1920s and was followed by several artists including Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, and Nina Simone, whose version was the first heard by the Animals.
The Animals first performed "The House of the Rising Sun" while on tour in England with Chuck Berry. Seeing the response of the audience to the song, the band decided to record it between stops on the tour.
"The House of the Rising Sun" song was recorded in one take as The Animals were already adept in playing it from numerous instances in touring.
The House of the Rising Sun" is a traditional folk song, sometimes called "Rising Sun Blues". It tells of a person's life gone wrong in the city of New Orleans. Many versions of 'House of the Rising Sun" also urge a sibling or parents and children to avoid the same fate. The most successful version of "House of the Rising Sun" was a number one hit recorded in 1964 by the British rock band The Animals. As a traditional folk song recorded by an electric rock band, it has been described as the "first folk rock hit"
The Animals version of "House of the Rising Sun" was played in 6/8 meter, unlike the 4/4 of most earlier versions. Arranging credit for "The House of the Rising Sun" went only to Alan Price. According to Burdon, this was simply because there was insufficient room to name all five band members on the record label, and Alan Price's first name was first alphabetically. However, this meant that only Price received songwriter's royalties for the hit, a fact that has caused bitterness among the other band members ever since.
According to John Steel, Bob Dylan told him that when he first heard the Animals' version on his car radio, he stopped to listen, "jumped out of his car" and "banged on the bonnet" (hood), inspiring him to go electric. Dave Van Ronk said that the Animals' version—like Dylan's version before it—was based on his arrangement of the song.

'The House of the Rising Sun' Lyrics [Woody Guthrie]
There is a house in New Orleans
You call the Rising Sun
It's been the ruin of many a poor soul
And me, oh God, I'm one
If I'd listened to what mama said
I'd be at home today
Being so young and foolish, poor girl
I let a gambler lead me astray
My mother she's a tailor
Sews those new blue jeans
My sweetheart, he's a drunkard, Lord God
He drinks down in New Orleans
He fills his glasses to the brim
Passes them around
The only pleasure that he gets out of life
Is a hoboin' from town to town
The only thing a drunkard needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
The only time that he's half satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk
Go and tell my baby sister
Never do like I have done
Shun that house down in New Orleans
That they call that Rising Sun.
It's one foot on the platform,
One foot on the train.
I'm going back down to New Orleans
To wear my ball and my chain
My life is almost over
My race is almost run
Going back down to New Orleans
To that house of the Rising Sun

Layla "Unplugged" by Eric Clapton Guitar Lesson
On the acoustic "unplugged" version of "Layla" by Eric Clapton, several acoustic guitars are played with a backing rhythm section. The following Layla acoustic guitar lesson will focus on all the essential rhythm and lead guitar solo parts. Along with guitar tabs and chord diagrams, we'll cover it all with a step by step approach.
Eric Clapton Layla Acoustic Version Guitar Chords
The Eric Clapton Layla guitar chords are:
Intro, Chorus, & Guitar Solo: 'Dm', 'Bb5', 'C5'.
Verse Chords: 'C#m', 'G#7', 'E', 'F#m', 'B', 'A'.
Eric Clapton Layla Unplugged Acoustic Guitar Solo Lesson
Both guitar solos on the "Unplugged" acoustic version of ‘Layla’ by Eric Clapton feature a slight shift in mood or tone between the Blues/Rock-sounding ‘D’ Pentatonic Minor scale and the Spanish-like ‘D’ Minor scale. The ‘D’ Pentatonic Minor scale (‘D’, ‘F’, ‘G’, ‘A’, ‘C’) is essentially the ‘D’ Minor scale with two less notes (‘Ba’ and ‘E’).
One of the songwriting techniques in ‘Layla’ is the use of modulation. Modulation is when sections of a song shift to another key. The Intro section is in the Key of ‘D’ Minor, while the Verse section shifts down a half- step to the Key of ‘C`’ Minor. Note how the Verse section uses all three primary chords (‘C`m’, ‘F`m’, & ‘G`m’) from the Key of ‘C`’ Minor, and all three chords from its relative major key of ‘E’ (‘E’, ‘A’, & ‘B’).

Eric Clapton Layla Acoustic Guitar Backing Track
This Eric Clapton "Layla" backing track features an acoustic guitar arrangement with rhythm and solo guitar. This acoustic guitar cover version of "Layla" by Eric Clapton is played in the Key of 'D' Minor - the same key used on the original recording by Derek & the Dominos on the album 'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs'.
Eric Clapton "Layla" Songfacts
"Layla" is a song written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon and originally recorded by Derek and the Dominos from the 1970 studio album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.
"Layla" was inspired by a love story that originated in 7th-century Arabia and later formed the basis of The Story of Layla and Majnun by the 12th-century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi, a copy of which Ian Dallas had given to Clapton. The book moved Clapton profoundly, because it was the tale of a young man who fell hopelessly in love with a beautiful young girl, went crazy and so could not marry her. "Layla" was further inspired by Clapton's love for Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend and fellow musician George Harrison of the Beatles. Clapton and Boyd eventually married.
"Layla" has since experienced great critical and popular acclaim. Two versions of "Layla" have achieved chart success, the first 'electric' version of "Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes in 1972 and the second acoustic 'performance by Eric Clapton 20 years later on MYV 'Unplugged'.
Clapton originally wrote "Layla" as a ballad, with lyrics describing his love for Boyd, but the song became a "rocker" when, according to Clapton, Allman composed the song's signature riff.
With an introductory minor pentatonic guitar lick that Allman supposedly based on an Albert King blues song, “As the Years Go Passing By."
A big part of what made “Layla” so memorable was the long piano coda that comprised the second half of the song. That section was credited to Jim Gordon.
Eric Clapton "Unplugged"
Unplugged is a 1992 album by Eric Clapton, recorded at Bray Studios, England in front of an audience for the MTV Unplugged television series. It includes a version "Tears in Heaven" and an acoustic version of "Layla".

"Layla" by Eric Clapton Lyrics (Acoustic "Unplugged")
What will you do when you get lonely?
No one waiting by your side
You've been runnin' and hiding much too long
You know it's just your foolish pride
Layla
Got me on my knees, Layla
I'm beggin' darling please, Layla
Darling won't you ease my worried mind?
I tried to give you consolation
Your old man won't let you down
Like a fool, I fell in love with you
You turned my whole world upside down
Layla
You've got me on my knees, Layla
I'm beggin' darling please, Layla
Darling won't you ease my worried mind?
Make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane
Please don't say we'll never find a way
Tell me all my love's in vain
Layla
You've got me on my knees, Layla
I'm beggin' darling please, Layla
Darling won't you ease my worried mind?
Layla
You've got me on my knees, Layla
I'm beggin' darling please, Layla
Darling won't you ease my worried mind?

Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here Guitar Lesson
Though Pink Floyd is primarily known for their progressive or psychedelic sound, ‘Wish You Were Here’ is essentially Country and Blues song. The original recording features several guitars, including acoustics, electric slide, and a dobro.
The following 'Wish You Were Here' guitar lesson will focus on the essential rhythm strum and lead guitar solos for a performance by one or two guitarists. Along with guitar tabs and chord diagrams, we'll cover it all with a step by step approach.
Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here Guitar Chords
The two-chord ‘Em7-G' progression is the primary rhythm guitar part that is repeated throughout the Intro and guitar solo sections. The verse and chorus chords are 'C', 'D', 'Am', & 'G'.
How to Strum Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
The key to how to strum the Wish You Were Here rhythm is to keep the fretting hand steady and in position by keeping the third and fourth fingers anchored on the top two strings along the third fret.
Played on a twelve-string acoustic, the Intro-Rhythm progression consists of five total sections. The entire progression is played twice to begin the song, then again during the Middle Solo and once more for the Final Solo/Coda.
Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here Guitar Solo Lesson
On the original recording of Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, the rhythm and solo guitar parts are played with a 'call and response' approach. The first step with timing is to focus on the call and response approach used in each section. For each section, the lead guitarist waits until the rhythm guitarist completes the initial ‘call’ riff before starting each ‘response’ riff. In the first section for example, the rhythm guitar ‘call’ will be the first five single notes played, while the solo riff ‘response’ starts on the last note of the ‘call’. All "Wish You Were Here" guitar solos and riffs are based from the ‘G’ Major scale.

Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here Songfacts
"Wish You Were Here" is a song by English rock band Pink Floyd. "Wish You Were Here" was released as the title track of Pink Floyd's 1975 album of the same name. David Gilmour and Roger Waters collaborated to write the music to "Wish You Were Here", and Gilmour sang the lead vocal.
In the original album version of "Wish You Were Here", the song segues from "Have a Cigar" as if a radio had been tuned away from one station through several others and finally to a new station where "Wish You Were Here" is beginning. The radio was recorded from David Gilmour's car radio. David Gilmour performed the Intro to "Wish You Were Here" on a twelve-string guitar, processed to sound like it was playing through an AM radio.
The intro riff to Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is repeated several times before David Gilmour plays further solos with scat singing accompaniment.
"Wish You Were Here" is often considered to be a direct tribute to Syd Barrett. However, on the documentary The Story of Wish You Were Here, Gilmour and Waters separately describe the original concept that differs from this interpretation. Waters, who mainly wrote the lyrics complementing Gilmour's initial riff idea and subsequent joint composition, describes the lyrics as being directed at himself, as his lyrics often are.
Roger Waters has noted that the collaboration between himself and David Gilmour on the song was "really good". David Gilmour has playfully called "Wish You Were Here" "a very simple country song" and stated that "because of its resonance and the emotional weight it carries, it is one of our [Pink Floyd's] best songs."

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd Lyrics
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell?
Blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war
For a leading role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here

America Ventura Highway Guitar Lesson
Several guitars are used on the original recording of ‘Ventura Highway’, including six and twelve-string acoustics. The following 'Ventura Highway' guitar lesson will focus on the essential rhythm strum and lead guitar riffs for a performance by one, two, or even three guitarists. Along with guitar tabs and chord diagrams, we'll cover it all with a step by step approach.
America Ventura Highway Guitar Chords
The two-chord ‘G6/D-Dmaj7' progression is the primary rhythm guitar part that is repeated throughout the Intro, Verse, and Chorus sections. Guitarist Dewey Bunnell uses the thumb to mute the bottom string for both chord shapes.
How to Strum Ventura Highway by America
The key to the Ventura Highway rhythm strum is to set a percussive ‘choppy’ feel with the right strumming hand. The muting effect is notated with 'x's', and can be obtained by slightly raising the fretting hand off the fretboard. Though there are many variations with strumming, start to focus on timing with a bass note/chord rhythm of: ‘bass-chop x-x-x chop-chop’). On the original recording, the very last ‘chop’ is occasionally muted. Keep time by emphasizing the bass note for each chord.
America Ventura Highway Guitar Riffs Lesson
On the original recording of Ventura Highway by America, two guitars play a repeated riff with slight variations throughout the Intro and Verse sections. The more-dominant sounding guitar riff can be played on either a twelve or six-string acoustic. Just prior to the Chorus, a doublestop riff works well for performances with just one lead guitarist. Aside from the opening riff to Ventura Highway, the entire sequence of guitar riffs is repeated during the second half of the song. All Ventura Highway guitar riffs are based from the ‘D’ Major scale.
America Ventura Highway Songfacts
America member Dewey Bunnell wrote Ventura Highway. In an interview Bunnell explained: "It was 1963 when I was in seventh grade, we got a flat tire and we're standing on the side of the road and I was staring at this highway sign. It said 'Ventura' on it and it just stuck with me. It was a sunny day and the ocean there, all of it."
Bunnell added: "I remember vividly having this mental picture of the stretch of the coastlines traveling with my family when I was younger. Ventura Highway itself, there is no such beast, what I was really trying to depict was the Pacific Coast Highway, Highway 1, which goes up to the town of Ventura."
Songwriting credits on America's songs were typically assigned to whoever came up with the idea, and that person would be the one who sings on the track. The entire band often made some contributions to the compositions, and while Dewey Bunnell gets solo songwriting credit on this song, he did get some help. The band's other primary songwriter, Gerry Beckley, told us: "the guitar lick on 'Ventura Highway' is something that Dan [Peek] and I put together that really wasn't a part of the song. The song is of course, super strong on its own.
Someone to Call My Lover
The opening guitar riff and musical hook to Ventura Highway by America is sampled throughout Janet Jackson's 2001 song "Someone to Call My Lover" by the production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who were influenced by America and "Ventura Highway" listening radio growing up in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Paluzzi Guitar
The objective of the Paluzzi Guitar video series is to help establish a foundation of guitar fundamentals by applying various playing techniques (rhythm, fingerstyle, and soloing) to various styles of music. The more playing styles and techniques a guitarist can learn, the more diverse and self-sufficient a guitarist will become. A self-sufficient guitarist can then teach themselves, communicate with other musicians, and even write their own music once a solid foundation of fundamentals is established.

Ventura Highway by America Lyrics
Chewin' on a piece of grass, walkin' down the road
Tell me, how long you gonna stay here, Joe?
Some people say this town don't look good in snow
You don't care, I know
Ventura Highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
You're gonna go, I know
'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air
Wishin' on a falling star, waitin' for the early train
Sorry boy, but I've been hit by a purple rain
Aw, c'mon Joe, you can always change your name
Thanks a lot son, just the same
Ventura Highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
You're gonna go, I know
'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air

I want to live
I want to give

For a heart of gold
It's these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching
For a heart of gold
And I'm getting old
Keep me searching

And I'm getting old
I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean
For a heart of gold
I've been in my mind
It's such a fine line
That keeps me searching
For a heart of gold
And I'm getting old
Keeps me searching
For a heart of gold
And I'm getting old
Keep me searching
For a heart of gold
You keep me searching
And I'm growing old
Keep me searching
For a heart of gold
I've been a miner
For a heart of gold

Neil Young Heart of Gold Songfacts
Heart of Gold by Neil Young was recorded in just two takes. The musicians were not familiar with Young or the song, but knew how to play. This spontaneity created just the right feel for the song.
Neil Young wrote Heart of Gold in 1971 after he suffered a back injury that made it difficult for him to play the electric guitar, so on the Harvest album tracks he played acoustic.
Heart of Gold was recorded at the first sessions for the Harvest album, which took place on Saturday, February 6, 1971 and were set up the night before.
Neil Young was in Nashville to record a performance for The Johnny Cash Show along with Tony Joe White, James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. Elliot Mazer, a producer who owned nearby Quadrafonic Studios, set up a dinner party inviting the show's guests. Mazer was friends with Young's manager Elliot Roberts, who introduced the two at the gathering. Young and Mazer quickly hit it off when Neil learned that Elliot has produced a band called Area Code 615. Young asked if he could set up a session the next day, and Mazer complied.
Mazur was able to get one member of Area Code 615: Drummer Kenny Buttrey. The other musicians he found were guitarist Teddy Irwin, bass player Tim Drummond, and pedal steel player Ben Keith. Keith, who had never heard of Neil Young, recalls showing up late and sitting down to play right away. He says they recorded five songs before they stopped for introductions. In an interview, Neil Young said "Heart of Gold" would not have been a hit without drummer Kenny Buttrey.
