New Satellte City Hall opens in Downtown Honolulu
City officials Monday formally opened the new Downtown Satellite City Hall at the Chinatown Gateway Plaza, a location that will provide twice the space and some added services unavailable at the old site in an underground Fort Street Mall space two blocks away.
The 2,905-square-foot space, at the site of a onetime Wendy’s Restaurant on the Nuuanu Avenue-Hotel Street side of the Chinatown Gateway complex, also provides improved disability access than the previous location.
It is expected to serve an average of 300 customers a day in need of basic government services such as motor vehicle and moped registration, bus pass sales, dog licensing and vehicle junking services. Like other satellite city halls, it also processes disability parking placards, accepts Board of Water Supply and property tax bill payments, and offers limited driver license (no new licenses) and state ID transactions.

A suspect is on the run after his attempt to shoplift a razor from a Nanakuli grocery store this morning went up in flames.
At about 6:30 a.m., the male suspect started a fire in aisle 6 of Sack N Save while trying to steal a razor that was on sale for $13.79.
A source said the culprit used a blow torch to try to melt the plastic packaging to the Gillette Fusion Proshield Chill razor, which was hanging on a locked merchandising hook.

Frustration grows with crowds, traffic at Laniakea Beach
It can take as long as an hour for North Shore drivers to travel just 2 miles in front of Laniakea Beach, where a 10-year-old boy from California was hit by a vehicle Aug. 1 while crossing Kamehameha Highway to get to a popular spot to watch sea turtles in Hawaii.
The simmering frustration over the 4-year-long traffic jam — blamed on tourists jaywalking across the two-lane highway to get to the beach — has now boiled over with people complaining about everything from who’s to blame to concerns that too many visitors are flooding the North Shore.
Tourism officials are offering to help fund short- and medium-term solutions — if any can be found — because of fears of a community backlash against visitors.
