Turtle Bay opens community garden on Oahu's North Shore
Hotel investment usually means more rooms, better pools, greater restaurant and retail choices.
More of that is eventually coming to Turtle Bay Resort, the largest hospitality development on Oahu’s North Shore. But on Friday the resort’s opening of Laulima Gardens proved that sometimes investing in the smallest of seeds brings the greatest community impact.
The resort and Pono Pacific welcomed the first 32 plot caretakers to its new community garden, a roughly 50-acre parcel along the makai side of the resort’s 540 acres of agricultural lands, which are in various stages of stewardship.

Hawaii's largest solar block goes online
The sun was shining brightly in Mililani on Tuesday as officials welcomed the the state’s largest collection of solar farms, a trio of sun-powered projects that will generate enough electricity to light up nearly 18,000 homes.
Hawaii Gov. David Ige joined officials with Hawaiian Electric Co. and developer Clearway Energy Group for a Hawaiian blessing amid rows and rows of solar panels at Mililani Solar II project.
Commercial operations at the three projects at Kawailoa, Waipio and Mililani were launched Tuesday following the blessing.
Together, the projects are home to more than 833,000 solar panels generating 110 megawatts of power, estimated to make up for the belching of 1.2 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions over 20 years.

Hawaii nursery experiments with local coral to speed up the healing of reefs
On Oahu’s Sand Island a small team of coral specialists and technicians has been working for years to restore the slow-growing coral reefs in Hawaii that are being subjected to increasingly frequent bleaching events.
The corals in the state, like many around the world, are threatened by climate change-driven bleaching, in which food-providing algae that live in their tissues abandon them once ocean temperatures become too warm, potentially killing the corals.
The work of the Division of Aquatic Resources’ Anuenue Coral Restoration Nursery, which began in 2016, highlights the particular needs of Hawaii’s corals, which are among the slowest-growing in the world.

Marijuana profits have yet to light up in Hawaii
Two years after Hawaii’s first medical marijuana dispensary opened on Maui, the legal pot industry has yet to achieve profitability.
Since the start of the year, gross sales have been growing, with $2.3 million in statewide sales and 293 pounds of cannabis sold in July, up from $1.6 million and 203 pounds in January, according to new statistics from the state Health Department.
But the dispensaries are still waiting for a return on their investment.
For Maui Grown Therapies, the state’s first dispensary, which opened in August 2017 at 44 Paa St. in Kahului, gross revenue grew by 84% over the past two years, and the number of active patients increased 180%, the company said.

Fire consumes vacant Honolulu home
A “vacant” 73-year-old house, sitting on a $2 million Kinau Street property and reportedly occupied by homeless people, went up in flames Tuesday.
The fire was fully involved when firefighters arrived at 1051 Kinau St. four minutes after the 4:12 p.m. alarm. The 2,016-square-foot, two-story house with finished basement, built in 1946, was set for demolition, a fire official said.
Neighbors expressed anger and frustration that the homeless had taken up occupancy, first on the porch, then enclosing the porch, punching out windows and using ladders to enter the upper floor and piling up rubbish in front of the house.
