Opponents to Sherwood Forest development protest in Waimanalo
Opponents of the city’s plans to build a multipurpose field, parking lot and playground at Sherwood Forest in Waimanalo rallied today at the forest’s entrance, citing a city order to contractors over the weekend to have work continue immediately.
There are protestors on either side of Kalanianaole Highway, some of whom have been there since 5 a.m.
Tracy Newman, a member of the Save Sherwood Forest group looking to stop construction, said the project is a “catalyst for development in Waimanalo.”
Aside from community concerns, there is a clear cultural one as well, which has grown as the forest’s designation as a funerary on the National Register of Historic Places and its listing on the Hawaii Historic Register has become more public.

The union wants to put pressure on Diamond Resorts to settle contracts at the properties.

TMT protesters seek probe of alleged police misconduct
Pu‘uhonua o Pu‘uhuluhulu Maunakea, leaders of the protests on Mauna Kea, are calling for a federal investigation into the state’s enforcement of Thirty Meter Telescope opponents and asking for the removal of a Hawaii County police officer who they said spread misinformation.
Protesters released a video statement Tuesday alleging that the state is using enforcement tactics that “harass, intimidate and vilify Mauna Kea protectors.” They provided a list of so-called “questionable” law enforcement actions, including the use of sobriety checkpoints, more vehicles parked in and around the blockade, and complaints of high beams and a low-flying helicopter over the kupuna camp.
They also provided the media with video and audio evidence of what they allege is a Hawaii County police officer providing false information to Mauna Kea protester Michael Glendon “in an apparent attempt to provoke him to retaliate against two supposed informants in our puuhonua.”

A 94-year-old Honolulu woman finds joy in topiaries she’s tended since the 1950s
Visitors to May Aoki-Higashiguchi’s home are first greeted by animals in her Japanese garden.
All the animals are topiaries — bushes trimmed into distinct shapes — made mostly out of mock orange shrubs. Their presence and the maintenance needed to keep them there are impressive.
Aoki-Higashiguchi, who turned 94 on Aug. 31, started her hybrid Japanese topiary/rock garden in 1955 and has worked tirelessly on it ever since. She has spent decades slowly manipulating the shrubs to grow into their proper animal shapes.

Fashion designer Anne Namba combines determined drive with CrossFit
The world of fashion brings to mind elegant dresses and glamorous runway shows, but when kimono couture’s Anne Namba isn’t prepping silken fabrics for her latest line, you might find her back-squatting 205 pounds. Or doing a series of pullups, perfecting her handstand pushups or buzzing through a drill of jumping rope so fast the rope is a blur. That’s all just a tiny part of the 63-year-old’s CrossFit regimen.Namba religiously attends her hourlong workout several times a week, and she’s been doing so for the past five years. Despite growing up in a sports- oriented family and boasting a tri-state champion weightlifter as her dad, she hasn’t always been an exercise fanatic.

Tanya's Pies and Grill
Popular eatery Tanya's Pies and Grill is reopening in Wahiawa.
Hungry devotees can get right back where they left off, to dig into such classics as that fried rice, with one egg and hot dog; corned beef hash breakfast (one patty, two eggs and choice of rice, toast or hash browns); corned beef hash lunch (two patties, one egg, rice and corn); steak and onions; liver and onions; and much more.
Likewise — and arguably most important — the pies that draw folks from near and far are also back.
Those in the know will recall that there’s a menu of pies, and a rotation schedule. Today, for instance, there’s chocolate cream, blueberry cream, apple, banana, and either peach or apricot. Tomorrow: chocolate cream, cherry cream, apple, banana, pear-peach and pumpkin. Other offerings include peach cream and custard. But no matter what the day, call ahead or risk disappointment — they regularly sell out.

Community meeting scheduled to discuss Laniakea beach
Honolulu Councilwoman Heidi Tsuneyoshi held at a press conference across the street from Laniakea, also known as Turtle Beach, about a resolution she introduced Friday, calling for the state Department of Transportation to reinstall the barriers on the mauka side of the road.
She said they are needed as an interim solution to fix the major traffic congestion for local residents and safety concerns for pedestrians who have to scurry across the road to get to the beach. She said the danger to pedestrians was highlighted last month when a 10-year-old California boy was struck and seriously injured while crossing the road.
A town hall meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Waialua Elementary School to discuss the road near Laniakea.
