Just like making fun of the fact Kamala has no biological children, comments about “childless cat ladies” are more harmful than helpful. I understand the greater point about the fact that parents have a greater stake in this nation’s future, and that’s a worthy discussion to be had in terms of whom we elect and prop up as leaders and even mentors or heroes. However, denigrating childless people (and let’s be real, it’s always women) isn’t the way. The world isn’t black and white. Women aren’t either wives and mothers, or crazy blue hairs with ten cats. There are so many different reasons why people—men and women both—are single and/or childless. In the US, currently 1 in 4 forty year olds have never been married. That’s a huge number; clearly, whatever is going on impacts men and women both, and it’s not going to be solved by mocking, which makes us look out-of-touch and insensitive. We can hold up marriage between one man and one woman as the ideal, without shutting out those who are currently single and/or childless or single and/or childless past a certain age. Folks on both the right and the left push for divorce to be as easy as possible. Again, on both right and left, certain people champion no fault divorce as if being able to terminate a marriage for any reason is a good thing. To folks on the right who think this way: please understand that when you support lenient divorce laws, you’re using the same thought process that pro-abortion people on the left do. You—like them—are essentially saying that for adults, there should be perennial freedom and choice. There should not be consequence for actions we take and then want to get out of. A person who’s had sex has made his/her choice. This person doesn’t have a right to further choice to kill their preborn offspring. A person who’s gotten married and made that vow, has made his/her choice. This married couple doesn’t then have a right to easily accessible divorce, no fault cited. We have freedom. We have choices. But once we do certain acts and make certain choices, we’re naturally limited in our subsequent freedom and choices. That’s the way the world works. We cannot have endless choice and freedom and zero consequences.
