Sharia is a text of Islamic sacred law, but no one really knows anything about it. In this series, Al Fadi has invited Lloyd De Jongh onto the set to discuss various aspects of this highly regarded religious law. Lloyd will review many aspects of the text including its origin, evolution, weaknesses, and its mysterious and guarded nature. Tune in as this series is sure to be both intriguing and informative. The Middle Ages, from the 5th to the 15thC is often characterised by a (supposed) lapse in scientific and philosophical progress. However, during the High Middle Ages (1000-1300AD), the intellectual landscape of Europe was transformed through the rediscovery of ancient texts, most notably those of Greek philosopher Aristotle. The significance of the rediscovery of Aristotle's texts is the role of his codified process of dialectic as a systematic tool for intellectual inquiry and problem-solving. Aristotle’s works reintroduced the dialectical method to Western thought, leading to scholasticism, a method of critical thought which was a hallmark of the medieval universities. Scholasticism is a method of learning more than a philosophy or a theology. It places strong emphasis on dialectical reasoning to extend knowledge by inference and to resolve contradictions. It sought to integrate the secular understanding of the ancient world with the dogma implicit in the revelations of Christianity. The Scholastic Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) used it extensively in his “Summa Theologica” a comprehensive work of theology. Thomas would pose a question, present objections to the Christian understanding of the issue, provide responses to these objections based on Aristotelian dialectic, and then synthesise the discussion to reach a conclusion. Martin Luther rejected four books from the New Testament (Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation) due to their incompatibility with his own doctrines. He refused to accept their inspiration and placed them in an appendix at the back of his Bible. Luther's approach to Scripture was based on his own theological beliefs, suggesting that someone today could also remove books from the New Testament if they disagree with their theology. Martin Luther dismissed Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation from the New Testament canon when he translated the New Testament into German. Luther rejected the inspiration of these books. These Biblical texts were incompatible with his doctrine. He denied their inspiration as they held teachings that contradicted his new doctrines. He judged Jude to be a modified copy of 2 Peter. Luther also denied that an apostle wrote Revelation or that the Holy Spirit inspired it. Luther appealed to no authority but his own personal discernment and placed these four books in an appendix at the back of his new Bible in an effort to drop them from the New Testament entirely. Luther's criticism of the Bible was not based historical arguments. He cared little about whether a writing was apostolic or not, but rather whether its contents agreed with what he perceived to be the truth of Scripture. Given Luther's example, someone today could remove any number of books from the New Testament canon if they judge them to be non-inspired because they read the Bible and found it failed to match their theology. The Torah teaches that there is only one God, while Christians believe in the Trinity. But this doesn't mean Christians worship three gods. Instead, the Trinity represents one true God who exists as three distinct persons in one Divine Being. To understand how both Jews and Christians can embrace the concept of “echad,” which means one in Hebrew, we need to look at the word's meaning. In the Bible, “echad” is used to describe a complex unity, such as a cluster of grapes or a married couple becoming one flesh. From Deuteronomy 6:4, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one.” The New Testament version of the Shema, a central Jewish prayer, is found in 1 Corinthians 8:6, where Paul acknowledges one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ. “But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.” This shows that the Trinity is not polytheism, but rather a belief in one God who exists as three persons in perfect harmony. The word “one” in the Bible is often used to describe the union of two separate things or persons, as seen in Genesis 1:5 – “And there was evening and there was morning, one day/the first day,” or “yom echad.” It describes two separate things, in this case, evening and morning, coming together as one. Genesis 2:24 – “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Thus, when Christians describe God as one, they mean that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are in complete union and unity, or ‘trinity’ forming the God of the Bible.
