The Didache, Διδαχή, is perhaps the earliest patristic Christian text dated to the 1st C (50-70AD) or early 2nd C (117AD). Origin: Syria, or Egypt. It was highly regarded by many early Christian authors and theologians. Athanasius of Alexandria (†373AD) recommended it to converts. It had a great influence on the Apostolic Constitutions (375AD). The councils of Hippo (393) and Carthage (397) in North Africa formally canonized the 27-book New Testament. Pope Innocent I ratified the same canon in 405. Before the New Testament canon was formally settled, a number of Biblical canons included the Didache; John of Damascus (†749) being a noted supporter. The Didache is mentioned by Eusebius (324) as non-canonical. It disappeared and was lost, until discovered in 1873 by Philotheos Bryennios, Metropolitan of Nicomedia (a Greek Orthodox bishop), published in 1883. The Didache’s 1st section, “The Two Ways,” is a treatise on basic Christian theology, morality, and conduct. Catechumens (converts in training) were instructed in its teachings before they were baptised. The second section deals with the administration of several sacraments: trinitarian baptism, the Eucharist (holy communion), and anointing with oil. The Didache, Διδαχή, is perhaps the earliest patristic Christian text dated to the 1st C (50-70AD) or early 2nd C (117AD). Origin: Syria, or Egypt. It was highly regarded by many early Christian authors and theologians. Athanasius of Alexandria (†373AD) recommended it to converts. It had a great influence on the Apostolic Constitutions (375AD). The councils of Hippo (393) and Carthage (397) in North Africa formally canonized the 27-book New Testament. Pope Innocent I ratified the same canon in 405. Before the New Testament canon was formally settled, a number of Biblical canons included the Didache; John of Damascus (†749) being a noted supporter. The Didache is mentioned by Eusebius (324) as non-canonical. It disappeared and was lost, until discovered in 1873 by Philotheos Bryennios, Metropolitan of Nicomedia (a Greek Orthodox bishop), published in 1883. The Didache’s 1st section, “The Two Ways,” is a treatise on basic Christian theology, morality, and conduct. Catechumens (converts in training) were instructed in its teachings before they were baptised. The second section deals with the administration of several sacraments: trinitarian baptism, the Eucharist (holy communion), and anointing with oil. Copernicus, Polish astronomer and mathematician, was best known for his heliocentric model of the universe, which placed the sun at the center and the planets orbiting around it. This model challenged the prevailing belief that the Earth was at the center of the universe. Copernicus' work laid the foundation for modern astronomy, his ideas had a profound impact on the scientific revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries. Protestant condemnation of Copernicus was swift. The Reformation condemned the work as delusional, if not outright heresy. Luther wrote “That fool would upset the whole art of astronomy.” John Calvin called him "insane". A Lutheran pastor by name of Andreas Osiander oversaw the publication of the book. He wrote and inserted an anonymous preface stating that the hypotheses in the book were not intended to be taken as absolutely true, or even probable, but were merely put forth to facilitate calculation. This was false. Copernicus believed what he wrote. The foreword undermined Copernicus, despite Osiander agreeing that Copernicus was correct. The translation of the Bible into English began in Anglo-Saxon times. The Anglo-Saxon period saw the development of the English language, as Old English (also known as Anglo-Saxon) emerged as a distinct language from the Germanic dialects spoken by the Anglo-Saxon tribes. The period also saw the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity, with the establishment of monasteries and the spread of Christian teachings throughout England. Overall, the Anglo-Saxon period was a significant time in English history, as it laid the foundations for the development of English language, culture, and identity. Caedmon (657 – 684), a Christian poet, translated biblical stories into Old English (Anglo-Saxon) verse in the 7th century. (Dates vary) He is known for his hymn, which is believed to be the earliest surviving Old English poem. Caedmon's Hymn is a short hymn of praise to God. It survives in a Latin translation by Bede in his Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum and in other dialects written down in several manuscripts of Bede's Historia. Bede wrote about the poet and his work in the fourth book of his Historia. Bede told the story of Cædmon who was an illiterate cow-herder who was suddenly able to recite a Christian song of creation in Old English verse. This miracle happened after Cædmon left a feast when they were passing a harp around for all to sing a song. He left the hall after feeling ashamed that he could not contribute a song. Later in a dream he said a man appeared to him and asked him to sing a song. Cædmon responded that he could not sing. But the man told him that he could and asked him to “Sing to me the beginning of all things.” Cædmon was then able to sing verses and words that he had not heard of before. Cædmon was sent home to turn more divine doctrine into song. The abbess was so impressed with the success of his gift that she told him to become a monk. Cædmon lived a long and very productive life as a monk. He created songs from all kinds of Church history and doctrine. No Caedmon was not assassinated by the Catholic Church for making translations.
