Major Discovery Makes Colonizing Mars A Lot More Feasible
With the amount of obvious similarities between Earth and the Red Planet, one of which (and probably the most important for us, mere mortals) being that Mars has roughly the same amount of day time as Earth, now there are even better news that might push the idea of colonizing our neighbor that much more feasible.
Oh, haven’t you heard the news? There is ice on Mars, and ice means clean water!
While scientists have made a living studying the vastness that is above our heads, they made this theory that once Mars had massive snowfalls that would build up on the planet’s surface. They had very good reason to speculate that where there is snow, there is bound to be water. Now, their theory has been confirmed - Mars does have water and it is huge news for humankind’s plans of colonizing it in the future.
Thanks to information from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, NASA has found a total of eight sites across the Red Planet that contain substantial ice pockets, just feet under the Mars’ rocky surface.
They are estimated to be less than a million years old, which in the geological circles is quite young for this type of thing. All that clean water removes a major barrier scientists have been working on since the subject of colonizing Mars was first discussed. And with Elon Musk predicting the SpaceX program could be landing humans on Mars in as little as seven years, knowing reachable, usable water is there brings the prospect of life on Mars one step closer to reality.

Ten Weird Beauty Inventions Women Had To Use In The Past
Women were once forced to go to more ridiculous and often times dangerous lengths than they do today to make themselves presentable. Have you heard of the freckle freezer? To remove their freckles 1930 women froze them with carbon dioxide and freckles amazingly dropped off after about a week, leaving skin unmarked!
In the 1940s women used the “Glamour Bonnet’ to improve their complexions. The idea was to vacuum out the atmospheric pressure around your head and stimulate blood circulation. In the 1920s, there was a device that turned naturally flat locks into desirable long-lasting curls. Every three months women bravely wrapped their wet hair around electrical equipment.
Losing weight was much easier in the 1940s with their massage chairs. The metal fat-blasting machines electrically rubbed away your hips and stomach. Women of the 1930s used a suction device hoping for a smooth and spotless face. Glass nozzles connected to a rubber tube vacuumed away all your skin imperfections.
In 1936 Isabella Gilbert invented a machine for those ‘unlucky’ ladies born with no natural dimples. The two knobs pressing into your cheeks were not only ineffective, but could also cause cancer.
For a rosy complexion the women of the 1940s heated up their faces with this electric mask. While the mask was toning their skin, the brass thimbles were protecting their fresh nail polish.
Before sunscreen there was the freckleproof cape that protected bathers from the sun, because tanned skin wasn’t cool back in the 1940s.
In addition, if you have partied hard the night before, Max Factor invented a cure for you back in the 1940s. Made for actresses to refresh their faces on a hot set, the mask soon turned into a treatment for hangovers.
In the 1930s if you didn’t know where to apply your makeup you would use this contraption. Max Factor developed the beauty micrometer to measure the contours of a woman’s face for a precise application.

Ten Day-To-Day Products From The Past That Were Radioactive
Products full of radioactive ingredients were the norm ‘back in the day’. It was the price you paid for whiter teeth and tasty treats. Before the negative side effects of a little something called radium were fully understood, it was the kind of ingredient that got tossed into just about every type of product you could imagine.
In the 1930s a German factory created a ‘healthy’ opinion to satisfy your sweet tooth. They filled chocolate bars with radio and claimed them to be absolutely rejuvenating. In the 1920s your parents may have made you brush your teeth with a radioactive toothpaste. Doramad toothpaste contained thorium and was believed to protect your teeth and gums.
In the early 1900s smoking would kill you even quicker than today. A German tobacco company was lacking cigarettes with radium to make smoking healthier, of course! What a nonsense! If you were low on energy in the 1920s, you could charge up your body with radium suppositories. Designed to cure fatigue and impotence, they were guaranteed to be perfectly harmless.
Radioactive condoms were thought to be the perfect product, protecting against unwanted pregnancy and disease. Until 1940s when the Federal Trade Commission seized and destroyed the “Nutex skins”.
Women used this cleaner to remove grease, paint, rust, everything but their skin. In 1910 housewives even polished their pots and kettles with this stuff. In 1932 the Tho-Radia makeup line made it into women’s cosmetics kits. Radium skin cream and thorium lipstick - everything to make your skin shine bright like a diamond. In the 1930s adding a pound of radioactive butter would give your pie a nourishing glow. A nuclear power plant right in your oven.
Triple-distilled radium water was believed to cure everything from stomach cancer to mental illnesses. However, it didn’t help an American athlete who drank 1,400 bottles of Radithor and died after his bones started falling apart.
Watching nuclear reaction was just a fun game for the kids of the 1950s. This toy lab never really took off and soon disappeared from shelves with only 5,000 kits sold.

Our Changing Climate Is Making Hurricanes Stronger
If you are wondering why hurricanes seem to be getting worse over the years this video will explain to you why. Hurricanes and tropical storms seems to last longer, dump much more rain with high winds and travel much further inland towards cities that are not capable or ready for such storms. Guess why?
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana with 38 cm (15 inches) of rain. While in 2017, Hurricane Harvey dumped over 150 cm (60 inches) of rain on Texas. Why did one hurricane drop more water than the other hurricane?
The answer is simple. Climate change! Climate change is described as a change in the distribution of weather patterns that lasts for an extended period of time (decades to millions of years). Certain human activities have been known to be the primary cause of climate change on the planet, also known as global warming.
Rising ocean temperatures are causing hurricanes to become more devastating than ever. Oceans capture over 90% of that excess heat that comes from our emissions. As humans, we cause emissions by using air pollutants and chemicals by burning coal and other fossil fuels, in cement production, in deforestation and other landscaping operations. Humans emitted roughly 40 billion metric tons of carbon monoxide just in 2015 alone. Still wondering why Hurricane Harvey was worse than Hurricane Katrina?
As a hurricane travels over the ocean, it can pick up the ocean's heat. The heat fuels the hurricane, causing faster wind speeds and strengthening the storm. As the strong hurricane winds travel over the hot ocean's surface, it make the water much easier to evaporate. This evaporation requires a lot of energy, so the warmer the temperatures are at the ocean's surface, the more energy is created, making the storm stronger and larger.
The heat also allows the hurricane to hold more precipitation. The scientific term for this is called cyclone. Only tropical cyclones that occur over the Atlantic or Pacific ocean are called Hurricanes. They are like giant cyclones that use warm and moist air created by the ocean's hot temperatures as fuel. This is why hurricanes usually only occur over the ocean and typically close to the equator.
And the ocean heat isn't just affecting hurricanes, but all storms in general. According to NASA, rainfalls snowstorms have increased by 76% since 1948. And the intensity and duration of of hurricanes over the North Atlantic have increased in frequency and strength since the early 1980's, producing many more category 4 and 5 storms.
The problem isn't going away any time soon. Hurricanes and tropical storms will continue to get worse as the human race continues to burn up fossil fuels and emit carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. Cities will not only need to improve their infrastructure and reevaluate their evacuation plans, but we will all as a planet need to come up with a plan to use much more clean energy and listen to our Mother Earth if we want make a difference.
Humans will need to cut down on emissions and use more clean energy. Because if we don't...we will be seeing much more of this!

Ten Bizarre Christmas Traditions From Around The World
The holiday season is that special time of year when you leave your shoes outside at night and hope Santa doesn’t fill them with sticks. Wait, what? There are some very weird Christmas traditions around the globe, like the one above which originates from Germany. While you may think it’s bizarre that your cousin always does a Santa Claus impression, those strange family traditions pale in comparison to the seriously freaky stuff that are put on this list.
Around the world, people are getting together with family and friends to celebrate the holiday season. While you are probably familiar with Christmas traditions such as Santa Claus giving presents, kissing under the mistletoe, and singing Christmas carols, some countries also have some quirky cultural customs. So, if you think that your friends and family have some weird Christmas traditions you should watch this video and then decide.
You would expect to see some variations of the basic concept of Santa Claus during the holiday season given Japan’s borderline infatuation with certain elements of Western culture. Thanks to a hugely successful 1974 Kentucky Fried Chicken ad campaign (“Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii!” or “Kentucky for Christmas”), the jolly old fat man in a red suit looks eerily like KFC’s Colonel Sanders. And it’s chicken, not turkey (a meat that is nearly impossible to find in Japan). that thousands of Japanese families dine on when December 25 roles around.
Christmas is a Western holiday and means nothing in Japan (only 1% of the population is Christian), however December 25 is a day that means huge sales for KFC across the country. At many locations you can expect waits of up to two hours or more for a bucket of deep-fried Christmas chicken. In 2015, KFC outlets selling packaged dinners that included cake and champagne saw sales pushing $50 million (U.S.) between December 23-25. Ho ho ho, and pass the drumsticks.

Forget Colonizing Space, Oceans Are Our New Frontier
Do you dream of living on Mars? Walking your Labradoodle on the green planet, fraternizing with your Martian neighbors, wearing those big glass helmets and floating in space.
We might have taken this from a page in a sci-fi novel, but the truth bis, people have been imagining about living on another planet for a very long time. Space expeditions are being sent all the time and scientists are looking for other planets like our Earth, that will help us sustain life and live it better. But before we take to the skies, maybe we should think of another surface on this planet that we could house on.
San Francisco's Seasteading Institute is looking to the world's oceans for both inspiration and solutions: could floating cities become areas of potentially self-governed technological and scientific exploration while also acting as a viable solution to the ever-growing problem of over-population?
As it floats now, the first step towards this concept will be a small one; a coastal community built in the waters of French Polynesia with 300 inhabitants, with a tentative move-in date of 2020.
The non-profit institute has spent almost a decade wishing that 1995 Kevin Costner movie had never been released, because it stand in their way of selling the idea of “special economic seazone”. If things go as planned, the Seasteading Institute is foreshadowing a future that will have thousands of these floating ocean communities and cities by 2050.
For all we know, it has already begun, albeit in the form of a liveable yachts” with luxury interiors and stilts that anchor and stabilize the homes during storms. Each floating house’s 4,350 square footage can be customized to its owner’s desires. They also are also pretty environmentally friendly, powered completely by solar panels on their roofs and equipped with systems that collect and purify rainwater.

Top Ten Animals That Could Be Brought Back From Extinction
Thanks to some scraps of DNA and a lot of scientific ingenuity there's hope that some long-extinct creatures may walk the Earth again. The first up is the Raphus Cucullatus. This animal is more commonly known as the Dodo bird. This is the flightless bird native to the tiny island of Mauritius. This bird was killed for food because it was so easy for people to catch.
Next up is the Tympanuchus Cupido Cupido: The Heath Hen. The likely feature at the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving dinner, this bird made quite a filling meal. These animals were plentiful in the early 1900s, but they were literally eaten out of existence.
The Neomonachus Tropicalis was the Carribean Monk Seal. This was originally known as the sea wolf. This creature was a tragedy of the human population as well. Humans first depleted their fish, then hunted them to extinction for their oil.
The Megaloceros Giganteus, or Irish Elk, was once the largest deer to ever walk the earth. These beautiful and majestic creatures stood twelve feet high. They died out toward the end of the Ice Age.
Number five on the list is Thylacinus Cynocephalus. This is also known as the Tasmanian Tiger. This was the biggest marsupial of modern times. It is quite a strange looking creature, and it almost looks like it is a cross between a few different animals. The last of these tigers of Tasmania died at the Hobart Zoo in 1936.
The Dinornis Novaezealandiae was the Moa: A giant flightless bird that once inhabited New Zealand. Moa were wiped out by Polynesian settlers, who hunted them for food.
The Bos Primigenius was the Aurochs, and it is the ancestor of domestic cattle. The last recorded live aurochs died in 1627 from natural causes unfortunately. Even if it does look incredibly similar to the cattle we see today, it is not the same animal.
The Coelodonta Antiquitatis or Woolly Rhino, was depicted on cave walls in France thirty thousand years ago. It resembles a cross between a rhino and a wooly mammoth. The worst part of this animal’s story is that they survived through the Ice Age, but they were ultimately exterminated by human hunting. The number of species of animals who were run into extinction because of human interaction is staggering and sickening. This beautiful creature was one of these casualties.
The Smilodon Fatalis was the saber toothed cat. This cat is a pretty recognized iconic image with most people. It was a lion sized predator with long canine teeth. These beautiful creatures went extinct after the Ice Age over eleven thousand years ago.
At the end of the list is Mammuthus Primigenius. This may quite possibly be the most iconic extinct creature that ever existed. Everyone knows the wooly mammoth. Even children’s movies depict this animal. They are the classic symbol of the Ice Age. Unbelievably, scientists are actually trying to bring these animals back into existence. They plan to use a surrogate elephant to perform this feat.

Scientists Have Discovered An Ancient Mayan Megacity In Guatemala
Archaeologists have uncovered some massive ancient urban sprawl in the depths of Guatemala's rainforests. The ruins were unearthed using a remote sensing technique LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Railing. The way it works is it bounces lasers off the ground, revealing contours hidden by the foliage.
The vast city envelops sites like Tikal, Holmul and Witzna, known for their pyramids and temples. It also shows that these famous heritage sites are merely the tip of the iceberg that is the lost urban network.
Found beneath the dense canopies of the Maya Biosphere Reserve are more than 60,000 man-made structures, like homes, canals, highways, tombes, eve defence fortifications, to name a few. They have all been identified in an aerial imagery collected in cooperation with a Maya cultural and natural heritage organization. The civilization is estimated to have peaked some 1,200 years ago. Data suggests of a population around 10-15 millions over an area of 800 square miles.
The infrastructure is highly advanced, with agricultural terracing and elevated trade routes to prevent flooding during the rainy season. The finds have forced experts to rethink the dimensions and complexity of the Maya empire.
This ancient nation obviously established a sturdy and creative culture they based on their relics. But recent research revealed that the scale of this long lost society is beyond what the experts have imagined.
Apparently, the Maya did more than just predict the end of the world.

Apparently Human Males Can Lactate Too
Thought lactating was exclusive to women? Think again.
Lactating has long been described as a strictly female characteristic. Females give birth to children and females feed them milk from their breasts. It sounds like a sound equation, except there is a little glitch. Apparently, males can lactate, too. But how is this possible?
It all boils down to the hormone prolactin. Both male and female human bodies have it, but the quantity is not the same. The pituitary gland must produce an excessive amount of prolactin to stimulate the breasts to create milk. This usually occurs after pregnancy and this is why females have been doing it for so long. But there are a few written instances throughout history that suggest that even human males are able to do it. One anecdote from Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina tells the tale of a baby suckling on an Englishman while on board a ship. There have been numerous other reports, ranging from a father raising his two baby daughters after their mother passed away while they were infants to a man serving as a wet nurse in his village in South America.
However, it is a fact that male lactation doesn’t happen fast and it doesn’t happen easily. You either have to have been starved or have some sort of an anomaly in order for this to occur. Still, the possibility sparks an interest for the scientific circles because it might solve a lot of problems with food scarcity in the future and it might relieve mothers of at least one task during motherhood.

These Are 10 Of The Most Foul Smelling Foods On The Planet
We all love a nice, juicy and tender cut of meat. The way it smells as it sizzles on the grill, the fat that drips off it and they char that makes it taste divine on the plate. We love it when our food tastes as delicious as it looks, but around the world, there are foods that definitely smell as good as they look - foul!
Number 10 is Narezushi, considered to be the original sushi. Originated in Asia in the 1st century, Narezushi is fish packed in salt and left to ferment for 6 months, leaving smelling like the deepest, darkest corners of the NYC sewer. Yum!
Next up is Kæstur hákarl, an Icelandic national dish. Its literal translation means “rotten shark”. Bon appetit!
We see your ammonia-smelling delicacy and we raise you a Kiviak, a recipe that calls for up to 500 small birds left to ferment for three months in a seal carcass. It is quite the delicacy in Greenland and it is usually eaten outside, to prevent your home smelling like the fiery pits of hell!
Another delicious dish is Stockfish, coming at us from yet another Nordic country. In Norway, they dry whitefish in the brisk northern air, hanging from wooden racks. A bacteria that has adapted to the Norwegian cold matures the fish, a process similar to that of maturing cheese.
Enough of the Nordics, how about we see what the Koreans like to eat. They have a dish called hongeo-hoe, skate fish that has been fermented in its own uric acid. Do we need to tell what that is?
Number five is the elusive century egg, that is usually a duck egg preserved in ash, clay, salt, quicklime, and rice for several months. The resulting dish is a black-brown egg that gives out a pungent odor of what else that rotten egg.
We lost our appetite for the day with only half of this list, but if your taste buds are tingling, make sure to watch the rest of this stinky list. Ew!
Have you had the chance to try any of these dishes? What is the awful thing you have tasted in your life? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below!
