Farming: In the back of my mind, I can see a dictionary page, defining farming as "The process by which fertile land is transformed into desert" .. a bit hyperbolic .. but not entirely inaccurate. Unseen to the naked eye, the soil in areas that have been used for growing crops over long periods of time have been depleted of many things.

This year, we got plenty of nuts .. nice, considering the relative age of our pecan trees. I know that if I plant them, I will have plenty of trees to sell next Fall-Winter period .. But I do so love eating pecans ..

As The heat of summer comes upon us, we retire to the shade of the grape arbor for a quick dip in a miniature pool, and plenty of watermelon. Although the arbor is due for a minor remodel, it is still attracting a small crowd .. for everyone else, there is this live stream!

I had heard such wonderful review of them, from my good friends down South .. a Cucurbita with almost invulnerability to vine borer moths? A high producing storage squash with excellent storage characteristics, and convenient size for small family meals? I HAD to try them for myself. We planted two .. and then they grew .. and GREW. The soil around the plum trees and jujubes was in need of conditioning, so I put it in daikon and clover .. until the pumpkins came, and smothered everything. I am certain that the tillage radish had time to work its magic before the great darkening .. but now the mighty Moschata is climbing over EVERYTHING. I know that I like to say that "I have no weeds" .. but I may have planted a couple! Un necessary things, things that are not serving a purpose will always falter, die quickly, and their constituents recycled, preferably as rapidly as possible. If you see anything growing that is healthy and vibrant, you can be certain that it IS fulfilling a purpose - and if it is something that you do not want or need, you will need to find something to replace it, that fulfills the same purpose .. or else nature will supply you with a volunteer from the soil seed bank. If the species that you introduce to replace the 'weeds' is a better fit, it will outcompete the volunteers .. and then the only weeding that you will be doing is favoring one plant over another, and harvesting resources. I have made the case before for moving out of population centers .. or at least relocating to a place where one can make use of the local resources to survive .. but what about moving to another State, or another Country?
