Grow this crop as your emergency food supply!
If you garden or farm in a warmer climate, this is a must-have survival crop.
We've now discovered that growing cassava isn't limited to the tropics. We are now successfully growing multiple varieties in zone 8! Here's how we figured out how far north cassava would grow for us.
If times get tough, make sure you're growing cassava!

Grow cassava as your survival food supply and you'll have a food pantry right in the ground, year-round. This tropical root crop is also known as yuca, manioc and tapioca. Cassava roots are starchy and dense, with good flavor. Along with yams and sweet potatoes, cassava are one of my favorite survival gardening crops for warm climates. #survivalfood #easygardening #prepping It's very easy to have a self-suffient prepper garden if you have space for cassava.

Grocery Row Gardening is a permaculture gardening method developed by David The Good. It is an agroforestry garden on a backyard scale, creating a food forest under control by putting it into rows. It uses elements from Stefan Sobkowiak's Permaculture Orchard, Andrew Millison's edible hedges, Geoff Lawton's food forest systems, Ernst Goetsch's Syntropic Agriculture, Ann Ralph's Grow a Little Fruit Tree and lots of my own innovation, creating a food garden that overflows with life. I consider it my backyard emergency food supply, as well as a place of joy and beauty.

Lasagna gardening allows you to get a yield while still building soil. You can take a terrible piece of ground and improve the soil rapidly while harvesting vegetables. We planted this lasagna garden back in May. It hasn't been weeded or watered for two months - and look at the sweet potatoes, the peppers, and the amazing soil that is forming!

Today we cover how to grow a survival food forest, increasing calories right from the beginning. A food forest system can take years to start producing; however, if you plant calorie crops right from the beginning, your food forest become a survival garden. Instead of waiting on fruit and nuts, you have food when you need it. If you're worried about supply lines, gas shortages, a survival food supply, and how many calories you need to live - this is the way to grow food fast! Plant those root crops! Even in a temperate climate food forest, you can grow potatoes, Jerusalem artichokes, turnips, rutabagas, carrots, parsnips, mangels, beets, onions, garlic and more. In a tropical food forest, you can plant bananas, plantains, yams, sweet potatoes, yacon, taro, eddoes, cassava, arrowroot, cannas, ginger, turmeric and more, getting calories and medicine in the ground as you wait for your trees to produce. Let your garden become your emergency food supply!

Tilling without a tiller is difficult with hand tools. We used to double-dig with a fork and a spade, but now we use a broadfork to till new ground. The Meadow Creature broadfork is the only one I use, since it's indestructible.
Gardening without gas is important in hard times, and I have tested this broadfork extensively and it's never failed me.

How tall does a deer fence need to be? We have heard eight feet or more, so we made a 9' fence. Problem: we need the deer to SEE it, so we have to add lots of flags. That's next. We're getting ready to plant a new grocery row garden, and maybe even make some raised beds, so stay tuned. I don't know if this deer fence will work or not, but I hope so! We are also metal detecting our new garden space in search of buried treasure.
