Do you need to make compost? Do you need to know how to make LOTS of compost? Here's our method - we grow cover crops and turn them into compost! Some of the roots stay in the ground, making compost beneath the soil. The tops we can cut and mound into compost piles, building humus for the gardens.
This cover crop includes mung beans, sorghum-sudan grass, black-eyed peas and sunn hemp. It fixes nitrogen and gives us lots of carbon. Cover cropping can fix bad soil, and can be grazed by animals to build topsoil fast - or you can till it under and garden the area. Making fast compost doesn't even need a pile. All you need is a handful of seeds to plant a cover crop!

In less than two years, we transformed a patch of terrible sand into a lush jungle of food, recreating the tropical system we first developed in Grenada. Grocery Row Gardening borrows and builds on ideas from Stefan Sobkowiak, Andrew Millison, Geoff Lawton, Ernst Goetsch, Dave Wilson Nurseries, Ann Ralph, Steve Solomon, Bill Mollison and more. It's a food forest / forest garden system under control, in neat rows, alley cropping fruit trees and vegetables, short crops and long-term perennials together. Consider it an orchard with veggie beds beneath the tree rows - plus lots of other plants for the pollinators and for medicine. This is a good way to expand on backyard orchard culture and raised bed gardening - and it's full of life and new surprises every year! We do not spray any poisons in this system, instead relying on nature to be our natural garden pest control. The beds were fed with alfalfa pellets, chop and drop, Dave's Fetid Swamp Water, Steve Solomon's Complete Organic Fertilizer mix, biochar, lime, and chicken run compost - and they look great! Even with very little care (and complete neglect for almost two months), it's still thriving and growing. We have a survival food supply right here - storing food right in the ground! All these roots, including taro, yams, cassava, sweet potatoes and more - are a storable calorie source we can dig as we need.

The $5 Milking Shed You Can Build in an Afternoon

Keeping a family cow doesn't have to be expensive. This is a simple milking shed design with a headgate / stanchion and milking stool, made from local wood we cut ourselves, along with pallet wood. You could make a full pallet wood shed to milk your cows, but we had all these popcorn trees, so we used those. All you need to buy are some screws or nails!

I recommend Logan Labs for soil testing: https://loganlabs.com/
If you want to know if your soil is good for gardening and are ready to start gardening in a new spot, the first thing you should do is look around! How does the grass look? What about the trees? Once you learn to "read" the land, you have a rough idea of where a good spot to garden might be. This is just the beginning, of course, as it's also useful to test the soil pH and mineral as well as organic matter content. However, it's gotten so I can usually tell right away if a garden will do well, just by looking at what is already growing. If azaleas are doing great, blueberries will as well. If you have lots of deciduous tree species, changes are you're in a good spot for planting an orchard. Wild grapes? Plant cultivated ones! It works well as a starting point. The more plant species and the denser and greener they are growing, the better your own gardening projects are likely to grow. Start a garden with these thoughts in mind.

This easy composting method is easy to set up, whether you own or rent. You can make a DIY compost bin from pallets and zip ties in just a few minutes, especially if you have good help! Making compost is as easy as throwing stuff on the ground - but if you have a way to contain it, you can keep compost safe from roving animals. If the pallets have too many gaps in them and you have issues with rats, mice, possums or feral giraffes getting into the compost, just staple some hardware cloth to the sides of the bin and cover it with a fifth pallet. Make compost fast with a pallet compost bin, the super-easy way!

Sometimes gardens do poorly. One of the best ways to fix them is to plant cover crops. Today we plant pigeon peas in our bad potato patch. Pigeon peas are one of my favorite multi-use plants from the tropics. Growing pigeon peas both adds nitrogen to the soil and suppresses weeds. It's also a good plant to feed goats.

Cover cropping adds life to the soil. Root exudates pump sugars into the ground, and increase good bacteria and fungi in your garden. If you want to add fungi to the garden as well as adding worms, bacteria and other good guys, plant a cover crop! This is a simple no-till method to build soil fast. You can plant Sudan-sorghum, rye grass, clover, millet, sunn hemp and other plants that will get to work adding sugar to the soil as they add organic matter! You don't need to make a compost pile to feed the garden - not when you can grow your own compost right in place! Any time you have bare soil, cover it with living plants and transform bad dirt like the regenerative farming people do!

If you line in a warm climate, these three roots are a great way to add calories to the garden. We are concerned about fertilizer shortages and the food supply, so we plant a LOT of root crops. These survival food supply crops are in the ground year-round and we consider them our food storage pantry for emergencies. The three roots I cover today are true yams, dasheen/malanga and two tropical varieties of sweet potato. If you want to grow a survival garden, you should focus on calorie crops first and these three are great options especially for #floridagardening, gardening in the warmer half of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and California. And they're must-have crops in Hawaii! Today I share how to propagate yam, how to propagate sweet potato, and how to grow taro. Thanks for watching!
