Today we work on creating a food forest one piece at a time. We planted a food forest at the end of last year, and have continued to plant it through spring. However, now we're dealing with grass taking over around our trees and plants. To beat this, and to give our trees the very best start possible, we are now creating islands of fertility around our plant guilds so they can beat the grass, be fed better, have more water, and generally thrive and outcompete the grass and weeds.
This is like lasagna gardening in the food forest! Just use sheet mulching to improve the soil and fix bad sand, then you get stronger trees and make fruit trees grow faster. Today we're improving a "food forest island" comprised of a pear tree, some cannas, turmeric, ginger, and a goumi berry. We are composting grass clippings, ragweed, pokeweed, mimosa branches and even chunks of oak limbs on top of a cardboard weed-block layer, underneath which we added a good layer of manure from the cow pasture. Once you water really well and deep mulch a piece of the food forest like this, the resultant life and growth is exceptional!
Thank you for watching.

Starting a food forest can be complicated - or it can be simple. I recommend planting a food forest by starting a ton of plants from cuttings and seeds, and then planting all over, selecting out what works and chopping down what fails. By progressively thinning and creating islands of fertility (i.e. plant guilds), you can build a lot of biomass quickly and get your food forest growing fast.

So today we try an experiment by growing pumpkins ON ACCIDENT in a compost pile.

We also have lots of cucumbers going to seed and plenty of peppers that need to be harvested. The edible D. bulbifera is coming along beautifully and the cassava is getting tall. All in all, it's a lovely time to walk through the Grocery Row Garden!

Summer solstice pruning keeps fruit trees small. Winter pruning is good for shape, but gives the trees more vigor - summer pruning reduces vigor.
If you prune fruit trees to keep them small, remember these tricks! It's all part of "backyard orchard culture," which makes Grocery Row Gardening possible.

How to Save Cucumber Seeds the Crazy Easy Way & Make Gardening Easier Every Year
This landrace cucumber project is really working out well. We're harvesting lots of cucumbers, plus we're saving seeds that will adapt to our own backyard and growing style. Instead of growing cucumbers on trellises, we grow cucumbers on the ground, as a sprawling ground cover.
Today David The Good shares how to save cucumber seeds while breeding your own heirloom variety.

David's gardening blog: http://www.thesurvivalgardener.com
To breed a landrace pickling cucumber variety, we mixed multiple types of cucumber together in our gardens and let them interbreed, and then we mixed in more varieties the next year. Then, we save from each plant that produces. Later, we'll select for flavor and other characteristics.
These cucumbers are being grown on the ground as a ground cover in the Grocery Row Gardens. We picked over 163lbs of cucumbers so far, and now it's time to save seeds from cucumbers that have matured. If you let your cucumbers ripen on the vine to bright yellow and/or orange, then you can save cucumber seeds that are fully ripe. Picking cucumbers when they are green will not give you viable seeds - you have to wait until cukes are mature, then harvest the big, melon-like yellow cucumbers. Inside, you'll find hundreds of seeds which can then be washed, dried and saved. Saving cucumber seeds is really easy - and if this cucumber landrace works out well, they'll become easier to grow each year as they adapt to our gardens and style of gardening.
Thanks for watching! Check out the work of Joseph Lofthouse, and particularly his book Landrace Gardening for more information on how saving seeds for a landrace can make your gardening easier and add fun and excitement to your harvests. Simple composting requires almost no rules. In fact, "no rules compost" is what nature does. Something dies and it falls on the ground - and it rots down into the soil. It's that simple. You don't need a complicated compost bin, you don't need a perfect C/N ratio, you don't need to hot compost, or thirty-day compost, or Berkeley Method your pile, etc.
All these can be good composting ideas, but they aren't necessary. You can start a compost pile today with no infrastructure. Get our there and compost everything!

Today we have Adirondack Blue, Red Pontiac and Yukon Gold potatoes curing on the porch, and it's a beautiful day to dig, dig, diggity dig potatoes.

The Untold Secret to Gardening Success

Whether you're planting a flower garden or planting a vegetable garden, having the right plants makes life easy. Jason Powell has been using his nursery as a testing ground for plant varieties that thrive in Alabama. This is another thing to remember: local nurseries usually have a much better idea of what will grow in your climate than the nurseries at Big Box stores. The plants there come from all over and may not be at all suitable - yet at a local nursery, they know the climate and what is growing for them. Petals from the Past is an excellent nursery on 40 acres in Central Alabama, and they test plant varieties, year after year. Jason shares great gardening advice in today's video.

We planted potatoes and true yams in the same garden bed, doubling yields by growing one crop that gives us roots early, and another that gives us roots late. By planting yams last fall, which then slept through the winter and will not yield until this fall, and then putting in potatoes in February and late March of this year for a May/June yield, we effectively doubled our production in this part of the garden. Growing blue potatoes is easy and they were quite productive. The variety is called "Adirondack Blue," and our experiment to see how it did in the South was more than successful. As the potato vines die down it lets us know when to harvest potatoes. There are more potatoes that need to be pulled, but this is a great start. Later, we'll harvest yams from the same space. What fun!
