Why Would You Compost Like THIS???? NOOOOOO!!!!!
WHAT? YOU HAVE A CONCRETE SLAB BENEATH YOUR COMPOST?
Compost Everything: https://amzn.to/3uyxnlm
David The Good Gardening Tee-shirts: https://www.aardvarktees.com/collections/the-survival-gardener
We've had quite a few questions about our concrete block three-bin compost pile system, and today we'll put the biggest one to rest.
Composting on a slab is quite possible. You don't need to compost on the ground to make compost! Yes, you may get more worms in the pile if you're right on the ground; however, you will also get tree roots, especially if you're composting over a longer period of time. After a few months, roots get into compost and can really eat up your hard work!
We have practiced composting in bins, composting on the ground, composting on slabs, composting in trenches, composting in barrels, composting in worm bins... you name it, we've either tried it or have studied it. This large compost bin system is made for producing lots of compost for our plant nursery and gardens, so we need to make sure it's easy to use, easy to keep safe from animals, and can be turned with a tractor and loaded and unloaded with ease. I've shared lots of compost ideas over the years, and this is just another one you can take or leave if you like.
Composting on a slab works just fine, and the worms and fungi and bacteria will happily show up on their own. Thank you for watching!

NITROGEN-FIXER FAIL
Today I present the final verdict on our test of mimosa leaves as a fertilizer.
David's Books: https://amzn.to/3SO7AQi
A couple months ago we set up a test where we added mimosa (Albizia julibrissin) leaves to one bed, with a control bed next to it. Then we planted a variety of brassicas, including mustard, pak choi and cauliflower. Interestingly, the bed with the mimosa leaves has done worse than the one without. My guess is that mimosa is allelopathic to some degree and suppressed the growth.
We got the original idea for using mimosa leaves as fertilizer from a book titled Restoring the Soil by author Roland Bunch. In that book, Bunch describes using fresh Gliricidia sepium leaves as a fertilizer by burying them next to growing crops. We decided to do the same thing with mimosa.

This actually worked??? Fruiting Pears Grafted onto Flowering Pear!
In the early spring @FlomatonFamous visited and we grafted fruiting pear varieties onto an unproductive, weedy, worthless Bradford pear tree. Despite a bad frost afterwards, as well as cattle damage, we are still having great success with some of the grafts. Check it out!

Recreating Terra Preta: I Think We're Getting Closer
Two years ago we began a quest to recreate terra preta, the famed "dark earth" of the Amazon. Now we are continuing the experiment on a new property, with new resources available to us. Will it work?

Terra preta, the "dark earth" of the Amazon, is a rich soil, almost certainly anthropogenic in nature, which keeps its fertility for centuries. Creating terra preta is one of the goals of our homestead, and we may be getting closer. Stay tuned as we try to make terra preta for our gardens here in Lower Alabama. We are making biochar, making bone ash, making bone char, adding meat, adding manure, adding clay, adding pottery shards and more. We must continue this quest!

We're harvesting sweet potatoes in the Grocery Row Garden and had to take you along. The fast yields we get from short crops have been great - and the tree crops haven't even started producing yet. There is a marvelous balance that you can strike between perennial and annual crops which will get you increasing yields over the years. We feed sweet potato vines to the pigs, too, which gives us one more yield from this crop!

Did you want to know how to grow pumpkins? Well, let me tell you. Just make a compost pile in the fall and throw pumpkins in it. Then you'll get way more pumpkins than you ever wanted. Obviously, it's not about making a nice garden or hills or any of that sort of thing. Oh no. It's about throwing pumpkins out to rot and letting them plant their own selves.
Sheesh.

If it's too hot to garden, don't worry. The benefits of mulch are numerous, but one overlooked benefit is how mulch keeps roots cool along with moderating moisture, so your trees can sail through a hot month.

We're hunting for wild pawpaws in the woods, and hoping that the fruits will ripen enough for us to grow the seeds! Pawpaw trees, AKA Asimina triloba, are a native North American tree species which is one of the few fruit trees to flower and fruit in the shade, making it a very good food forest species.
