Alkaline Water and L-Glutamine: Impact on Testosterone and Recovery EP. 1176 FEB 2024
In a scientific knockout, a study found that athletes who consumed both alkaline water and L-glutamine before exercise experienced a significant boost in salivary α-amylase activity, indicating enhanced immunity. They also saw a rise in testosterone levels, potentially indicating faster muscle recovery. While the mechanisms require further investigation, this suggests a possible synergistic effect between the two substances. Although research focuses on athletes, it raises intriguing possibilities for anyone seeking to optimize recovery and potentially improve immune function. Remember, science is always evolving, offering new tools to support your well-being.

Strawberries and Cognitive Improvements Ep. 1189 MAY 2024
A new study from the University of Cincinnati suggests strawberries might be more than just a delicious treat. Researchers gave overweight middle-aged adults a daily powder supplement with the equivalent of one cup of strawberries. After 12 weeks, those on the strawberry powder showed improvements in memory and reduced symptoms of depression. Scientists believe this might be due to the anti-inflammatory properties of anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant found in strawberries. This is exciting preliminary research, but further studies with larger groups and longer durations are needed to confirm these findings.

Unlocking Power: Can Rinsing with Carbs Boost Strength? Episode 1187 MAY 2024
This study investigated a novel strategy to improve deadlift performance: carbohydrate mouth rinsing (CMR). Participants performed Romanian deadlifts after either CMR with a maltodextrin solution or a placebo rinse. Researchers observed significant improvements in eccentric peak power, average force, peak speed, and total work during CMR trials. This suggests CMR might enhance motor performance through brain stimulation triggered by carbohydrate receptors in the mouth. The video will delve deeper into the study's design, explore potential mechanisms, and discuss the implications for resistance training routines.

Light Exposure: Risk and Benefit (New Study) Ep.1186 APR 2024
A giant study from Monash University followed over 86,000 people to see how light exposure impacted their mental health. Participants shared their sleep habits, how much light they saw during the day and night, and any mental health diagnoses they had. The big finding? People exposed to more light at night seemed more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. But that's not all! People who got plenty of daytime sunshine were less likely to struggle with these conditions. This suggests a simple yet powerful way to support your mental well-being: embrace the sunshine during the day and dim the lights at night.

Can Cinnamon Extract Help Fight Hair Loss? Ep. 1184 APR 2024
Researchers are looking at ways to help hair growth, and a new study shows promise with cinnamon! They found a tiny molecule in cinnamon called cinnamic acid that can increase hair growth by helping the body use oxytocin, a hormone important for hair health. In lab tests, cinnamic acid showed results almost as good as oxytocin itself, but with the advantage of being small enough to be absorbed by the scalp. This is exciting news for future hair growth products!

Dietary Reversal of Lupus Symptoms: Case Study Dietary Reversal of Lupus Symptoms: Case Study Ep.1182 MAR 2024
A small study followed three women with lupus and Sjögren's syndrome who saw a dramatic improvement in symptoms after switching to a specific diet. This diet focused on raw fruits and vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables, and included omega-3 fatty acids from sources like flax seeds. All three women reported near-complete symptom remission within a month and some have remained symptom-free for over six years without medication. While more research is needed, these results suggest this dietary approach may be helpful for managing autoimmune diseases.

Improved mitochondrial function, reduced fat mass, fasting insulin and triglycerides, and is elevated in the blood compartment after an acute bout of exercise in both male and female subjects (57). In general, the elevated post-exercise plasma levels of 12,13-DiHOME with almond intake support positive metabolic outcomes for adults engaging in unaccustomed eccentric exercise bouts. Other almond-related benefits for exercisers revealed in this study include reduced feelings of fatigue and tension, better leg-back strength during recovery, and decreased muscle damage during the first day of recovery.

African Indigenous Bioactive Foods and Herbs Episode 1126 MAR 2023
(ABSTRACT) With over 6 million coronavirus pandemic deaths, the African continent reported the lowest death rate despite having a high disease burden. The African community’s resilience to the pandemic has been attributed to climate and weather conditions, herd immunity, repeated exposure to infectious organisms that help stimulate the immune system, and a disproportionately large youth population. In addition, functional foods, herbal remedies, and dietary supplements contain micronutrients and bioactive compounds that can help boost the immune system.

Beta-Alanine Supplementation in Combat Sports: Ep. 1173 JAN 24
Combat athletes, facing explosive bursts and grueling rounds, might find a friend in β-alanine. This amino acid, not a direct performance booster, fuels carnosine, a muscle buffer that fights fatigue. Studies suggest 4-6 grams daily for 4 weeks can improve performance in combat-like bursts (60-240 seconds), potentially boosting strength, power, work capacity, and even recovery. While more research is needed, β-alanine, timed with meals, could be a safe weapon in a combat athlete's arsenal, helping them push their limits and dominate the ring.
