Kylian Mbappe and world champions France's fall from top
Three years ago France and Kylian Mbappe were on top of the world.
The country had just won the World Cup and the striker, at the age of 19, was named the competition's best young player, culminating in a scintillating performance to beat Croatia in the final.
Roll time on to the summer of 2021 and Mbappe missed the decisive penalty that saw France go out of Euro 2020 in the last 16 at the hands of huge underdogs Switzerland.
As French daily L'Equipe remarked in a headline on their website: "Fallen from so high."
For Mbappe, this will surely be a minor setback in what is becoming a remarkable career - but is there a reason why he and his world champion team-mates looked so off the pace and are heading home?
Former France midfielder Patrick Vieira was scathing in his assessment of the team, saying on ITV: "The best team deserve to go to the next round and tonight that is the Swiss.
"It was a poor French national team. There wasn't any togetherness, there wasn't any spirit. We didn't play as a team so we didn't deserve to go to the next round."

Outbreaks emerge across Australia in 'new phase' of pandemic
A Covid outbreak in Sydney linked to the highly contagious Delta variant has grown to 128 cases. A small number of positive infections have also been recorded in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia.
This is the first time in months that cases have emerged in multiple parts of the country at the same time. State and territory leaders will meet Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Monday for an emergency meeting.
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Australia is facing "a critical time" in its fight against Covid, as various states shut borders and enforced new restrictions to prevent further spread of the virus. "I think we're entering a new phase of this pandemic, with the more contagious Delta strain," Mr Frydenberg told the media on Monday.
The escalation in Covid infections has prompted lockdowns in the cities of Sydney and Darwin, as well as restrictions across four states.

US airstrikes in Iraq and Syria
The US has launched air strikes against an Iran-backed militia in Iraq and Syria, the Pentagon announced.
The strikes hit "operational and weapons storage facilities", in response to drone attacks by the militia on US forces, a statement said. "President Biden has been clear that he will act to protect US personnel," the Pentagon said.
This is the second round of airstrikes Joe Biden has authorised against Iran-backed militias since taking office. US forces based in Iraq have been hit several times in recent months by drone attacks. Iran has denied any involvement.
Around 2,500 US troops are based in the country as part of an international coalition fighting the jihadist Islamic State (IS) group.
According to the Pentagon statement, the "defensive precision air strikes" hit two targets in Syria and one in Iraq. It said Iran-backed militia groups including Kataib Hezbollah and Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada used these facilities.
Since 2009, the US has designated Kataib Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation, accusing them of threatening the peace and stability of Iraq.

More churches burn down on Canada
Two more Catholic churches burned down in indigenous communities in western Canada early on Saturday. The fires at St Ann's Church and the Chopaka Church began within an hour of each other in British Columbia.
Officers said both buildings were completely destroyed, and they were treating the fires as "suspicious". Last Monday two other Catholic churches in the province were destroyed in fires, as Canada marked National Indigenous People's Day.
"The investigations into the previous fires and these two new fires are ongoing with no arrests or charges," Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt Jason Bayda said.
It comes after hundreds of unmarked graves were discovered at sites of former residential schools in Canada. The government-funded compulsory schools were run by religious groups in the 19th and 20th centuries with the aim of assimilating indigenous youth.
Indigenous groups have demanded a nationwide search for more graves.

Colombia President Iván Duque's helicopter hit by gunfire
Gunfire has hit a helicopter carrying the president of Colombia as it flew near the border with Venezuela.
President Iván Duque was flying toward Cúcuta in the Norte de Santander province, alongside the defence minister, interior minister, and the province's governor. A spokesman for the presidency said nobody was hurt in the incident.
Mr Duque denounced the "cowardly attack" and said he was not frightened "by violence or acts of terrorism".
"Our state is strong and Colombia is strong to confront this kind of threat," he said in a video address posted on Twitter. Security forces are under orders to find those responsible, he added.
Earlier this month the ELN denied any involvement in a car bomb attack on a military base in Cúcuta. The attack injured 36 people, including two US military advisers.

George Floyd murder: Derek Chauvin sentenced to over 22 years
The US white ex-police officer convicted of murdering African-American man George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020 has been sentenced to 22 years and six months in jail.
The judge said Derek Chauvin's sentence was based "on your abuse of a position of trust and authority, and also the particular cruelty shown" to Mr Floyd.
Mr Floyd, 48 years old, died after Chauvin knelt on his neck for nine minutes. His murder caused global protests against racism and police brutality.
Chauvin, 45, was convicted of second-degree murder and other charges last month. During his trial, his lawyer described the killing as "an error made in good faith". Chauvin was also told to register as a predatory offender and was barred from owning firearms for life.
He and three other former officers are separately charged with violating George Floyd's civil rights.

The boss of Nike has made a robust defense of the firm's business in China after facing a consumer boycott there.
Chief executive John Donahoe said "Nike is a brand that is of China and for China" in response to a question about competition from Chinese brands. Mr Donahoe was speaking during a call with Wall Street analysts about Nike's latest earnings report.
The comments come after the sportswear giant was recently hit by a backlash over statements about Xinjiang.
Mr Donahoe said he remained confident that China would continue to be a fast-growing market for the company due to its many years of investment there.

Miami building collapse: 159 missing, officials say
The number of people listed as missing after the collapse of a 12-storey building in the US city of Miami has risen to 159, officials say. Four people are known to have died.
The mayor of Miami-Dade says they "still have hope" of finding survivors. Search teams working around the clock have reported hearing people banging beneath the debris. What caused the 40-year-old building to collapse early on Thursday morning remains unclear.
At least 102 people have now been accounted for, but it is uncertain how many were in the building when it came down. Dozens of people have been evacuated from what is left of the structure.
President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for Florida, meaning the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) will help state agencies with the relief effort.
As the building has stood since 1980, it was due its standard 40-year review. The building was undergoing its "recertification" process and required repairs, officials said.

Czech Republic: Deadly tornado sweeps through villages
A tornado has swept through several villages in the south-eastern Czech Republic, killing three people and injuring at least 60, rescuers say.
Thursday's storm blew off roofs from a number of buildings in the southern Breclav and Hodonin districts, uprooting trees and overturning cars. The worst-hit places looked like a war zone in videos posted by witnesses. "It's living hell," said South Moravia regional governor Jan Grolich after visiting the area. Rescue teams from across the country and also from neighbouring Austria and Slovakia have been deployed.
Michaela Bothová, a spokeswoman for the South Moravian rescue service, told the media that 63 people had been taken to hospital by medical services, ten of whom had severe injuries. Three later died. Dozens of other people sought medical help themselves, she added, and further casualties could not be ruled out as rescuers searched rubble.
Half of the village of Hrusky was destroyed by the tornado, its deputy mayor Marek Babisz said, according to local media.
"The church is without the tower, the elementary school has no roof and insulation any more, only walls remained from what were houses," he told Czech public radio.

Sydney city centre and Bondi beach to enter lockdown
More than one million people in Sydney's central and eastern suburbs, including Bondi Beach, will be locked down after a jump in Covid cases. The Australian city is battling to contain an outbreak of the highly infectious Delta variant.
Officials reported 17 new cases on Friday, taking the cluster to 65 cases. It is the first lockdown in Australia's largest city since December. The country has consistently maintained very low rates of Covid transmission.
The stay-at-home order will affect the city centre and inner-city suburbs, as well as beachside suburbs in the east. "We don't want to see this situation linger for weeks. We would like to see this situation end sooner rather than later," New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.
But she added that medical experts believed only a targeted lockdown was necessary for now, sparing the wider city from shutting down.
From Saturday, residents as well as people who work in the affected areas will have to stay at home except for essential reasons. The lockdown will be enforced until 2 July.

Gold rush fuels armed violence in Brazilian Amazon
At around midday on 11 May, Dario Kopenawa, an indigenous leader, received a desperate phone call from a remote village in the Brazilian Amazon. Palimiú has a population of about 1,000, and they live in large communal houses on the banks of a river called Uraricoera. You can only reach it by plane, or after a long journey on a boat.
Kopenawa, who is from the Yanomami tribe, is used to hearing pleas for help from communities in the rainforest, but this one was different. "They attacked us," a man said, "they almost killed us". They, Kopenawa was told, were garimpeiros, or illegal gold miners, who had arrived on seven motorboats, some carrying automatic weapons, and started shooting indiscriminately.
Earlier, this week, the Supreme Court ordered the Bolsonaro government to take measures to protect the village and other indigenous communities, and to remove the garimpeiros from the areas. But Kopenawa said the Yanomami were tired of waiting. "We're under threat," he said. "Our patience has ended."

Pentagon UFO report: before the end of June
A highly anticipated US government report on UFOs (unidentified flying objects) is due to be released before the end of June. Here's what we know so far. The unclassified report was demanded by Congress after numerous reports from the US military of vehicles seen moving erratically in the sky.
It also follows a cultural shift that saw the US military and US political leadership go from extraterrestrial-sceptic to ET-curious.
But with little conclusive evidence expected to confirm any intergalactic visitations, it remains to be seen whether any earthling minds will change.
Military leaders warn that the technology, if not alien, may belong to US adversaries such as Russia or China.

Kamala Harris to make first trip to border
US Vice-President Kamala Harris will on Friday make her first trip to the US southern border since taking office.
She has faced questions about why she has not visited the boundary since the White House assigned her in March to address the "root causes" of migration.
The visit was announced a week after former President Donald Trump said he would go to the border on 30 June.
The number of undocumented migrants reaching the US-Mexico border is at the highest level in more than 20 years.
A BBC investigation of a detention centre for migrant children in El Paso, Texas, has found reports of sexual abuse, Covid and lice outbreaks, hungry children being served undercooked meat and sandstorms engulfing the desert tent camps where the minors are being held.

'Heart breaking' conditions in US migrant child camp
At a US border detention centre in the Texan desert, migrant children have been living in alarming conditions - where disease is rampant, food can be dangerous and there are reports of sexual abuse, an investigation by the BBC has found through interviews with staff and children.
In recent months, the US has seen a massive rise in migrants and asylum seekers from Central America. Violence, natural disasters and pandemic-related economic strife are some of the reasons behind the influx, experts say.
Some have also suggested the perception of a more lenient administration under Democrat Joe Biden has contributed to the crisis, though the White House has urged migrants against journeying to the US border.
The tented camp in the Fort Bliss military base in El Paso, Texas, is the temporary home for over 2,000 teenaged children who have crossed the US-Mexico border alone and are now awaiting reunification with family in the US.

Britney Spears speaks out against 'abusive' conservatorship at hearing
US pop star Britney Spears has spoken out against her conservatorship at a hearing in Los Angeles. In a rare public testimony, the singer told a court her father controlled her "100,000%" and she wanted the arrangement to end. "I am traumatised," she said, speaking remotely. "I just want my life back."
Jamie Spears was granted control over his daughter's personal and business affairs in a court-ordered conservatorship in 2008.The order was originally granted after the star was hospitalized amid concerns over her mental health.
There has been speculation for years about how Spears felt about the arrangement, with fans eagerly combing her social media output for clues.
"I want to end this conservatorship without being evaluated," she told the court decisively in an emotional 20-minute address, calling the arrangement "abusive". "I deserve to have a life, I've worked my whole life. I deserve to have a two to three-year break," she said.

John McAfee: Anti-virus creator found dead
Anti-virus software entrepreneur John McAfee has been found dead in a Barcelona prison cell hours after a Spanish court agreed to extradite him to the US to face tax evasion charges.
The Catalan Justice Department said prison medics tried to resuscitate him, but were not successful. It said in a statement that "everything indicates" McAfee took his own life.
A controversial figure in the tech world, his company released the first commercial anti-virus software.
McAfee VirusScan helped to spark a multi-billion dollar industry in the computer world, and was eventually sold to technology giant Intel for more than $7.6bn (£4.7bn).
He will be remembered, rightly, as an important figure in the development of the technology scene of the 1980s and 1990s. But he will also be remembered as a deeply controversial figure, who at times seemed intent in taking a path in life that might lead to trouble.

Setback for EU in legal fight with AstraZeneca
The EU has lost a legal battle in Brussels to force Anglo-Swedish drug maker AstraZeneca to supply 120m doses of Covid-19 vaccine by the end of June.
It went to court last month after the company delayed shipment of the vital vaccines, having originally committed to supply 300m doses by the same date. However, the EU demand was not satisfied by the judge in Brussels.
But the judge did impose a deadline on AstraZeneca to supply doses to the EU over the summer or face hefty fines.
Both the EU and the pharmaceutical company talked up Friday's court order, with Brussels saying it confirmed its position and AstraZeneca saying it welcomed the outcome.
The two-dose Oxford-AstraZeneca jab is one of the big three vaccines, along with those developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, and has by far the greatest global reach.

Fusion plant backed by Jeff Bezos to be built in UK
A company backed by Amazon's Jeff Bezos is set to build a large-scale nuclear fusion demonstration plant in Oxfordshire.
Canada's General Fusion is one of the leading private firms aiming to turn the promise of fusion into a commercially viable energy source. The new facility will be built at Culham, home to the UK's national fusion research programme.
It won't generate power, but will be 70% the size of a commercial reactor.
General Fusion will enter into a long-term commercial lease with the UK Atomic Energy Authority following the construction of the facility at the Culham campus. While commercial details have not been disclosed, the development is said to cost around $400m. It aims to be operational by 2025.

Palestinians cancel vaccine swap deal with Israel
The Palestinian Authority has cancelled a deal under which Israel was to give it at least one million Covid vaccines.
The authority said the Pfizer jabs were too close to their expiry date. Earlier, Israel said it didn't need an ageing stock of vaccines and they were to be used to speed up the Palestinian vaccination programme.
In return, the Palestinians were to give Israel a similar number of vaccines they are expecting from the Pfizer organisation later in the year.
However, when the first batch of jabs from Israel arrived, Palestinian officials said they were even nearer their expiry date than expected.
They said there wasn't enough time to use them, and that the deal was off.

Myanmar: UN calls for arms embargo against military
The UN has issued a rare call to halt to arms sales to Myanmar in response to this year's violent military coup. The General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning the military junta, which overthrew the country's elected government in February.
The UN also called for the release of political detainees, such as elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and an end to violence against peaceful protesters. While not legally binding, the resolution is politically significant.
"The risk of a large-scale civil war is real," UN special envoy on Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, told the General Assembly. "Time is of the essence. The opportunity to reverse the military takeover is narrowing."
It was supported by 119 countries, with Belarus the only one to vote against it. Another 36 countries abstained, including Russia and China - Myanmar military's two biggest arms suppliers.
Some of the abstainers said the crisis was an internal issue for Myanmar, while others said the resolution did not address a brutal military crackdown on the Rohingya Muslim population four years ago, which forced almost a million people to flee the country.

Alex Harvill: US daredevil dies during world record attempt
A 28-year-old daredevil has died in the US state of Washington after crashing while trying to break the world record for the longest motorcycle ramp jump.
Officials said Alex Harvill died after an accident during a practice run on Thursday morning. He was planning to attempt the 351ft (107m) jump in front of spectators at the Moses Lake Airshow.
A video of the incident shows his motorcycle landing shy of the intended target and crashing into a dirt mound. Local media said Mr Harvill appeared to have been thrown over the handlebars and lost his helmet during the crash.
Organisers of the Moses Lake Airshow originally said Harvill had been taken to hospital with injuries, but a spokesman from the local police later confirmed he had died.
"Our deepest sympathies go out to Alex's family, friends and loved ones," the Grant County Sheriff's Office said.

Gaza fire balloons draw renewed Israel air strikes
Israel's military carried out air strikes on the Gaza Strip overnight on Thursday after Palestinian militants there sent more incendiary balloons into southern Israel.
It is the second round of strikes in three nights after multiple attacks with balloon-borne devices. The violence will further strain a fragile ceasefire in place since 21 May. The truce followed 11 days of fighting between Israel and militants in Gaza.
This week's air strikes are the first under Israel's new Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, whose coalition replaced long-standing leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said the strikes hit military compounds and a rocket launch site belonging to Hamas, the militant group which runs Gaza. It said the targets were in Gaza City and Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.
