South Africa's former president hands himself over to police
South Africa's former President Jacob Zuma has handed himself in to police to begin serving a 15-month jail sentence for contempt of court.
He was admitted to Estcourt Correctional Centre in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday. Police had warned that they were prepared to arrest him if he did not hand himself in by midnight.
Zuma, 79, was handed the jail term last week after he failed to attend a corruption inquiry. The sentencing sparked an unprecedented legal drama in South Africa, which has never seen a former president jailed before.
Zuma had initially refused to hand himself in, but in a short statement on Wednesday, the Jacob Zuma Foundation said he had "decided to comply".
His daughter, Dudu Zuma-Sambudla, later wrote on Twitter that her father was "en route [to the jail] and he is still in high spirits".

European warn Iran over enriched uranium metal production
Iran has begun the process of producing enriched uranium metal, it has told the global nuclear watchdog.
Tehran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the process was to develop fuel for a research reactor. But uranium metal could also be used to make the core of a nuclear bomb.
European powers said Iran's move breached a nuclear deal and threatened talks to revive it. The US called it an "unfortunate step backwards".
Under the nuclear deal, Iran agreed not to produce uranium metal or conduct research and development (R&D) on uranium metallurgy for 15 years.
But in December, Iran's parliament passed a law requiring the government to bring the metallic uranium factory at the Isfahan Fuel Fabrication Plant on line within five months.

Haiti President Jovenel Moïse killed in attack
Haiti's President Jovenel Moïse has been killed in an attack on his home in the nation's capital, according to the country's interim prime minister.
Claude Joseph said the president's home in Port-au-Prince was stormed by unidentified armed men at 01:00 local time (05:00 GMT). First Lady Martine Moïse was also injured in the attack.
Mr Joseph said that "all measures had been taken to guarantee the continuity of the state". He has now taken control of the impoverished Caribbean nation, and has urged the public to remain calm.
He called the shooting of the president a "heinous, inhuman and barbaric act". Jovenel Moïse, 53, had been in power since February 2017, after his predecessor Michel Martelly stepped down.

Israel and South Korea strike Pfizer vaccine deal
Israel has struck a deal to provide South Korea with vaccines in return for jabs in a future shipment. The deal involves about 700,000 of Israel's Pfizer doses that are due to expire soon.
It comes just weeks after the Palestinian authority called off a deal to receive a million doses from Israel, claiming the vaccines were too close to their expiry date.
South Korea says the deal will allow it to accelerate vaccinations. The vaccine doses are set to arrive in the next few days and authorities in South Korea hope to start using them by 13 July.
On Tuesday the country recorded 1,006 cases, the highest daily total in six months. The doses will be used in the capital Seoul, where cases are rising among 20 - 30-year-olds.
Authorities there said the vaccines would be used to inoculate those considered at risk. This will also include street cleaners, delivery workers and retail employees, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said.

Hong Kong arrests group over alleged terror plot
Hong Kong police have arrested nine people including six high school children over an alleged terrorist plot. Members of the group are aged between 15 and 39 years old.
Police said they had rented a room in a hotel to build bombs and planned to attack the city's courts, transport networks and streets. The arrests come as Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam warned against "illegal ideas" spreading through the city.
The group is being held under the national security law, which has been used to crush dissent after years of pro-democracy protests lead by mostly young activists.
Police said they seized the highly explosive chemical triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in a hotel room that was used as a laboratory for bomb-making equipment.
Senior Superintendent Li Kwai-wah told reporters the group had planned "to attack some of the public facilities in Hong Kong, including the Cross-Harbor Tunnel, railways, court rooms and they even wanted to lay bombs in the rubbish bin on the street, with a view to maximise the damage caused to the society".

Israel's new government fails to extend citizenship law
Israel's parliament has failed to pass an extension to a controversial law barring Palestinians from the occupied West Bank or Gaza who marry Israelis from being granted citizenship rights.
After a debate that lasted through the night, the vote was tied 59 to 59. It was the first big defeat for Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's government since it took office last month.
The legislation, which critics say is discriminatory, is now due to expire at the end of Tuesday. Thousands of Palestinians previously unable to claim citizenship rights may now be able to do so.
Mr Netanyahu had refused to help get the measure passed, insisting on Monday that it was the government's responsibility and not the opposition's.
"You cannot form a government that is based on anti-Zionist forces, and them come to us and tell us to save you from this fracture and failure," he said.

Debris from missing plane found on Russian Far East Kamchatka peninsula
Debris from a passenger plane carrying 28 people which went missing in the Russian Far East on Tuesday has been found, officials say.
The An-26 aircraft lost contact with air traffic control shortly before it was due to land in the settlement of Palana, in the north of the remote Kamchatka peninsula. It is thought unlikely that anyone survived the crash.
The plane was flying from the regional centre Petropavlovsk. Officials said that communication with the plane had been lost 9km (5.5 miles) from Palana airport, 10 minutes before it was scheduled to land.
Unconfirmed reports say it hit a rock as it was coming in to land. It is thought that it then crashed on the coast.
In a statement posted on the Kamchatka regional government's website, Governor Vladimir Solodov said fragments of the fuselage were found both on the shore and in the sea.

Gang behind huge cyber-attack demands $70m in Bitcoin
The gang behind a "colossal" ransomware attack has demanded $70m (£50.5m) paid in Bitcoin in return for a "universal decryptor" that it says will unlock the files of all victims.
The REvil group claims its malware, which initially targeted US IT firm Kaseya, has hit one million "systems". This number has not been verified and the exact total of victims is unknown.
However, it does include 500 Swedish Coop supermarkets and 11 schools in New Zealand. Two Dutch IT firms have also been hit, according to local media reports.
On Friday, cyber-security firm Huntress Labs estimated about 200 firms had been affected. The "supply chain" attack initially targeted Kaseya, before spreading through corporate networks that use its software.

Azerbaijan mud volcano triggers huge blast | The Daily Update
#TheDailyUpdate
A huge explosion has been seen off the coast of Azerbaijan in the Caspian Sea, sending plumes of black smoke and flames into the sky.
The blast, which erupted in an area full of oil and gas fields on Sunday, was caused by a mud volcano, the government says. None of the oil farms were damaged and no-one was hurt, it added.
Mud volcanoes are formed underground by water, minerals and flammable gasses, which can ignite when they erupt. Videos shared online showed a fireball and smoke rising above the sea on Sunday.
The blast took place about 10km (6 miles) from the Umid gas field, which is 75km (45 miles) off the coast of Azerbaijan's capital Baku, state oil company Socar spokesman Ibrahim Ahmadoc said.

Russian food firm VkusVill triggers row over lesbian family ad
Russian health food chain VkusVill has triggered a storm of criticism on social media for posting an online advertisement showing a lesbian family, then removing it and apologising.
There was anger from those for and against the ad, which ran on VkusVill's website under the slogan "Recipes for family happiness".
The firm said the ad was intended for people aged 18 and above. Russia bans any content deemed to be spreading gay "propaganda" to minors.
In addition to that 2013 law, Russia bans gay marriage and adoption by gay couples.
Instead of the photo showing the family group - mother Yuma, daughters Mila and Alina, and Alina's girlfriend Ksyusha - VkusVill now shows a conventional family under the same slogan. VkusVill translates into English as "Tasteville

Afghanistan: Soldiers flee to Tajikistan after militant clashes
More than 1,000 Afghan soldiers have fled to neighbouring Tajikistan after clashing with Taliban militants, officials have said.
The troops retreated over the border to "save their own lives", according to a statement by Tajikistan's border guard. Violence has risen in Afghanistan, with the Taliban launching attacks and taking more territory in recent weeks.
The surge coincides with the end of Nato's 20-year military mission in the country. The vast majority of remaining foreign forces in Afghanistan have been withdrawn ahead of a September deadline, and there are concerns that the Afghan military will collapse.
Under a deal with the Taliban, the US and its Nato allies agreed to withdraw all troops in return for a commitment by the militants not to allow al-Qaeda or any other extremist group to operate in the areas they control.

Nigeria gunmen kidnap 'nurses and infants' from Zaria hospital
Gunmen in Nigeria have abducted at least eight people from a hospital in the north-west of the country, police say.
The attack took place at the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Centre in Zaria early on Sunday morning. Some reports say the number of people taken by the group is higher and includes nurses and children.
There has been a recent spate of abductions from schools and universities for ransom. On Monday, reports of another mass kidnapping from a school near Kaduna city, about 80km (50 miles) south-west of Zaria, also emerged.
The mother of a 15-year-old girl who was kidnapped from Bethel Baptist School told the media that 140 schoolchildren had been seized by a large group of armed men who arrived on motorbikes and broke down the fence.

Egypt agrees deal to release ship that blocked Suez Canal
Egypt will release the container ship that blocked the Suez Canal in March, after it agreed a compensation deal with the vessel's owners and insurers.
The two sides said the Ever Given would be allowed on Wednesday to leave the Great Bitter Lake, the canal's midway point, where it has been impounded.
The deal's terms were not revealed, but Egypt had demanded $550million.
The 400m-long Ever Given became wedged across the canal after running aground amid high winds.
It was freed six days later following a salvage operation that involved a flotilla of tug boats and dredging vessels, and during which one person was killed.

Indonesia faces oxygen crisis
Indonesia's government has ordered producers to prioritise medical oxygen amid a Covid surge and a shortage of oxygen in a number of cities.
Hospitals say they have almost exhausted supplies, with one reporting that 63 patients died as a result of oxygen shortages. Indonesia is recording more than 25,000 new cases every day.
Increased travel and the highly contagious Delta variant have exacerbated the crisis. Indonesia has had the worst Covid outbreak in South East Asia, with about 2.3 million positive cases and more than 60,000 deaths so far.
However, experts warn that the overall numbers are potentially much higher because of severely inadequate testing outside the capital Jakarta.
A lockdown was announced on the country's main island Java, as well as in the tourist island of Bali last week.

Any foreign troops left in Afghanistan after Nato's September withdrawal deadline will be at risk as occupiers, the Taliban has told the media.
It comes amid reports that 1,000 mainly US troops could remain on the ground to protect diplomatic missions and Kabul's international airport. Nato's 20-year military mission in Afghanistan has all but ended.
But violence in the country continues to rise, with the Taliban taking more territory.
Under a deal with the militant group, the US and its Nato allies agreed to withdraw all troops in return for a commitment by the Taliban not to allow al-Qaeda or any other extremist group to operate in the areas they control.
As Afghan forces prepare to take charge of security alone, concern is growing for the future of Kabul.

Dozens killed in Philippine military plane crash
Fifty people have died and dozens more have been injured after a military plane crashed in the Philippines.
The Lockheed C-130 transport aircraft was carrying 96 people, mostly troops, when it overshot a runway at Jolo airport in Sulu province on Sunday.
The soldiers were among reinforcements sent to combat Islamist militants such as the Abu Sayyaf group.
The dead are mainly military personnel, but three civilians on the ground were also killed, the defence ministry said.
Five people were initially listed as missing, but all passengers onboard have now been accounted for.
A spokesperson from the Armed Forces of the Philippines told media that they were looking for the flight data recorder to find out why exactly the plane might have crashed.
Major Gen Edgard Arevalo said there was no sign of any attack on the plane

Dozens dead as heatwave shatters records
Dozens of people have died in Canada amid an unprecedented heatwave that has smashed temperature records. Police in the Vancouver area have responded to more than 130 sudden deaths since Friday. Most were elderly or had underlying health conditions. They said the heat was a contributing factor in many cases.
On Tuesday, Canada recorded its highest ever temperature for a third straight day - 49.5 Celsius in Lytton, British Columbia.
Before this week, temperatures in the country had never passed 45 Celsius. The heatwave is due to a dome of high pressure hovering over the north-western US and Canada.
Experts say climate change is expected to increase the frequency of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves. However, linking any single event to global warming is complicated.

Musk ready to invest up to $30 billion in Starlink
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk said on Tuesday that his satellite internet service Starlink - a project launched by SpaceX - was growing quickly, telling a crowd at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona that the number of Starlink customers could reach half a million over the next year.
MUSK told the media: "We recently passed the strategically notable number of 69,420 active users. We're, I think, on our way to having a few hundred thousand users, possibly over 500,000 users within 12 months."
Starlink, an array of low-orbit satellites offering high-speed internet for people living in remote areas, is already offering a trial service and says it aims for near-global coverage of the populated world this year.

Death toll in Florida building collapse rises
Search-and-rescue efforts stretched through a sixth day on Tuesday at the site of a collapsed Florida condominium complex where at least a dozen people died and 149 more remained missing amid fading hopes of finding anyone else alive.
Remains of the 12th casualty in the disaster, which could rank as the deadliest accidental structural failure in U.S. history, were recovered on Tuesday, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at an afternoon news conference.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused a major section of the 40-year-old Champlain Towers South condo to give way abruptly early on Thursday as residents slept.
Initial attention has focused on structural deficiencies described in a 2018 engineer's report.

Flying car completes test flight between airports
A prototype flying car has completed a 35-minute flight between international airports in Nitra and Bratislava, Slovakia. The hybrid car-aircraft, AirCar, is equipped with a BMW engine and runs on regular petrol-pump fuel.
Its creator, Prof Stefan Klein, said it could fly about 1,000km (600 miles), at a height of 8,200ft and had clocked up 40 hours in the air so far.
It takes two minutes and 15 seconds to transform from car into aircraft. In the air, the vehicle reached a cruising speed of 170km/h.
It can carry two people, with a combined weight limit of 200kg (31 stone). But unlike drone-taxi prototypes, it cannot take off and land vertically and requires a runway.
