LEGALLY ARMED BLACK WOMAN SAYS HER GUN GOT HER SAFELY HOME
CHICAGO (CBS) — A woman fought back and fired her own gun when a would-be carjacker pointed a gun at her outside a bank in Roseland on Monday afternoon.
CBS 2’s Jermont Terry talked with the woman exclusively afterward. She did not appear on camera, but did speak for an audio recording.
The woman fired at the carjacker when he approached her at gunpoint just as she was getting into her car in the parking lot of the Chase Bank at 10260 S. Michigan Ave.
Hours later, a bullet casing from the shots the woman fired remained lying on the ground. The woman said she had just left the bank and had some cash in her hand – but before she could get to her car, parked a few feet from the front door of the bank – she said someone else opened her front door and a gun was aimed at her head.
“Thank God I had my gun, or I’d probably be dead right now,” the woman said.
The woman expressed raw emotions as she reflected on how her quick run to the bank left her heart racing.
“I had just come out of the bank and was sitting in my car about to lock my door to pull off in leave, and he opened my door and put a gun in my face,” the woman said.
The thief was not expecting the woman, wh0o has a concealed carry license, to pull her gun out.
“And when he saw me get mine, he looked surprised – and I started shooting, and he started running,” she said. “He ran.”
The woman does not recall how many times she fired.
“Hell no – just started busting,” she said.
The woman also does not know if she struck the would-be carjacker, but she knows the shots were at very close range. She reversed her Nissan Versa, and pulled up right outside the Chase Bank – then ran inside for help.
The woman hopes the next person thinking of carjacking anyone realizes they may not be the only ones with a weapon.
“I pray every night that I don’t have to shoot nobody, but if I have to, then I’m prepared and ready,” the woman said. “So God, I was ready.”
It was still unclear late Monday if any of the woman’s shots hit the would-be carjacker or carjackers, but we do know Chicago Police were checking with area hospitals to see if someone walks in with gunshot wound.
Police are also reviewing surveillance video.
Meanwhile, we do know the woman thankfully was home late Monday – and she is crediting her concealed carry licensed for allowing her to get home safely.

37 YEAR OLD BLACK WOMAN USES HER LEGAL GUN TO SAVE HERSELF FROM 2 TEENAGE ARMED ROBBERS
ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A St. Louis woman says she’s grateful to be alive after two teenagers attempted carjacking her at gunpoint. Afraid for her life, she used her own gun against them, wounding one.
The 37-year-old victim says just seconds after she parked outside her apartment Monday night, two young men passed her. She says at first the 13-year-old suspect asked to use her cell phone. He was with an older teen, about 16 years old.
“The other young man said, ‘So, you don’t have a phone?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t.’ And he pulled out his gun and said, ‘Well, give me your keys,’” the woman said.
The woman says the 13-year-old took off with her keys and kept trying to start her car. She says he kept his hand wrapped in a piece of clothing, as if he had a gun, but never revealed one.
“My mind frame was to keep the other gentleman calm, so therefore, he wouldn’t shoot. It was pretty frightening,” the woman said.
But despite her fears, the woman pulled her own gun out of her purse and fired multiple times.
“It’s a six-round, and I let the clip loose. All six in fear of my life,” she said. “I am very grateful to be alive.”
As the teens took off, the 13-year-old was hit in the leg. Police found him a block away, and he is now in juvenile custody.
Police are still looking for the other teen.

WATCH THIS MOM SCHOOL A REPORTER ON WHY GOOD GUYS SHOULD HAVE GUNS
It’s no secret that corporate reporters aren’t the most poised or articulate about handling or talking about guns, but a recent interaction between ABC News reporter Devin Dwyer and a mother of five in New York might take the cake.
In the interview, Dwyer asks Cheryl Apple, a small business owner and recent first-time gun owner, to justify why she felt the need to apply for an unrestricted license to carry her 9 mm pistol. Her response to Dwyer is perfect.
“Do we really want a whole bunch of Cheryls running around with pistols in the grocery store?” Dwyer asked.
“Yeah, we probably do because Cheryl is trained,” Apple replied indignantly. “I feel proficient with my weapon, I feel secure with my weapon, and I feel confident with my weapon. I don’t think the Cheryls are the one[s] out there that are hurting people and committing the crimes and being unsafe with their guns.”

NYC TV STATION REPORTS ON SCOTUS HEARING
Supreme Court Could Strike Down Law That Restricts NYers From Carrying Gun In Public For Self-Defense
New York’s tough gun laws are in the crosshairs of the Supreme Court.
The high court could strike down a law that restricts people from carrying concealed handguns outside the home for self-defense.
On Wednesday, the court was hearing arguments in its biggest guns case in more than a decade, a dispute over whether New York's law violates the Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms.”
Chief Justice John Roberts and other conservative members of the court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, suggested New York's law goes too far. Why, Roberts asked, does a person seeking a license to carry a gun in public for self-defense have to show a special need to do so? “The idea that you would need a license to exercise a right is unusual with regard to the Bill of Rights,” he said.

LEGALLY ARMED CITIZEN STOPS MASS SHOOTING AT TEXAS WALMART
'I Chose To Not Be A Victim': Decatur Native Credited With Stopping Texas Mass Shooting by Man Armed With AK-47
WESLACO, Texas (WAND) – A Decatur native is being called a hero in plain clothes after his Army background kicked in.
"I choose to not be a victim,” John Allen, of Mercedes, Texas, said.
It was Monday, Aug. 17 as the 1981 Stephen Decatur High School graduate arrived at the Walmart in Weslaco.
“I just didn't want him to kill innocent people,” Allen said as recounted seeing a man walking into the store dressed in black and carrying an AK-47.
While most would retreat and call 911 seeing something like that, not knowing what the man’s intentions were, Allen was not about to stand back. He jumped into action.
"We have open carry in Texas, but you don’t carry an AK-47,” he said.
He placed his .45 automatic in his holster and made his way toward the gunman with a message for him.
"You're not going to shoot anyone in this store today,” he said. “I'm not going to let that happen."
Allen held the man a gunpoint with a store security guard. His actions led to the man putting down the gun.

69-YEAR-OLD WOMAN SHOOTS, KILLS HOME INTRUDER
NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio (WOIO) - A 21-year-old woman was shot and killed after police said she forced her way into a couple’s North Olmsted home.
According to the North Olmsted Police Department, the woman broke into the husband and wife’s home on Mastick Road just before 11 p.m. Sunday.
Police said the intruder fought with the 72-year-old husband. It was then that the 69-year-old wife grabbed their gun and pulled the trigger, hitting the intruder in the stomach.
The homeowners told police they did not know Tompkins.
The thought of this being a random act sent chills down the spine of neighbor Tatyana Wargo.
“I had goosebumps all over my body,” Wargo told 19 News.
The terrifying ordeal happened just feet from Wargo’s home, prompting her to take new precautions.
She has a Ring doorbell at her front door, but says it wasn’t active when the intruder struck her neighbor’s home.
Wargo told 19 News on Monday she planned to reactivate her subscription with Ring right away.
“I was going to do it last night, but we didn’t because we were decorating and I’m doing it today,” she said.
Police said the homeowners have not been charged and are continuing to investigate to figure out why Tompkins picked that particular home in that particular neighborhood.

POLICE: SUSPECTED ROBBER SHOT, KILLED BY SUBWAY EMPLOYEE NEAR ALBUQUERQUE AIRPORT
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department says a Subway store employee shot and killed a suspected robber inside the southeast Albuquerque restaurant early Tuesday morning.
Tuesday morning, Subway employees told officers an armed person walked into the restaurant around 5:20 a.m. and tried robbing an employee. The Albuquerque Police Department says that’s when another worker who had a gun came out of a back room and shot the suspected robber.
The New Mexico Business Coalition says it’s worried about employee safety at Albuquerque businesses and isn’t surprised some are carrying guns. “Unfortunately, employers and employees are living in fear for their lives now in New Mexico and they’re taking extraordinary measures to protect themselves,” New Mexico Business Coalition President Carla Sonntag said.
The group said it has concerns over APD’s response times while the department is short-staffed. News 13 asked APD about its average response time to armed robbery calls but have not heard back.
It’s too soon to know if this is considered a justifiable homicide. Police say they’re concerned this is the second robbery-turned-homicide at a restaurant or business in recent weeks.

‘THIS IS CHAOS:’ BARBERSHOP OWNER DESCRIBES SHOOTING ARMED MAN POINTING GUN AT CHILDREN, PATRONS
Marlon Mascoe, 24, Was Upset Over Joke Barber Made About His Hair, Report Shows
MELBOURNE, Fla. – A quick-thinking Melbourne barbershop owner shot and disarmed a disgruntled customer who returned with a handgun he used to point at customers, barbers and two young children, according to Melbourne police records.
The situation unfolded Saturday at the New York Hair Barbershop on West Florida Avenue in Melbourne. The suspect was booked into the Brevard County Jail Thursday.
The owner of the barbershop told Melbourne police Marlon Mascoe, 24, came in and was waiting for another barber to cut his hair. The owner offered to cut his hair instead but Mascoe declined. The owner said he made a joke that he wasn’t good enough to cut Mascoe’s hair and said Mascoe had “nappy hair like me.” The owner said Mascoe appeared upset and walked out.
About 10 minutes later, the owner was cutting another person’s hair when Mascoe returned wearing a face mask and holding a black handgun. He also had a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head, according to the report. The barber said he recognized Mascoe by his “Jamaican accent” and because he had been in the shop just a few minutes prior.
The barber said Mascoe said, “This is real, this is a real gun” and pointed the weapon at barbers and patrons in the shop.
A witness later told Melbourne police, “When (Mascoe) was pointing it at me ... I was looking down the barrel.”
As Mascoe continued to point the gun at people, the shop owner said he retrieved his firearm and ducked behind a barber chair.
The barber said when Mascoe turned, he took the opportunity to shoot him. After Mascoe was on the ground, the barber instructed someone else to call 911, according to the report.

WISCONSIN GUN STORES OFFER SAFE FIREARMS STORAGE FOR VETERANS IN CRISIS
A program in Wisconsin is trying to give veterans a safe place to store their guns in a time of crisis.
The Gun Shop Project and Safe Storage Program works with Wisconsin gun shops and ranges to provide support to the gun owner community.
Twelve gun shops in the state have a safe for people to use so far.
"It's not to take away their weapon. It's just to leave it here until things get cleared up on a personal level," Steve D'Orazio said.
D'Orazio is the owner of Max Creek Outdoors in Oregon, Wisconsin. He has had a gun safe at his gun shop for more than a year.
"I hope it would give them a peace of mind, knowing it's here in a secure building. We don't judge by any means. If they want to talk we're here to listen," D'Orazio said.
The safe gives veterans, and anyone else that needs it, a place to bring their guns if they are in a poor mental state. D'Orazio will store it for as long as needed at no cost.
"We have had outside customers come in before I was involved in this program and we have stored their guns for personal reasons as well, as safety reasons," D'Orazio said.

RISE IN GUN SALES RESULTS IN LOW SUPPLY OF AMMO
From 2019 To 2020, Background Checks Increased From 28 Million To 39 Million
URBANDALE, Iowa — "There's a big spike in overall gun sales for the last two years," says Dave Bloom, owner of JLM Shooting Supply in Urbandale.
The FBI reports the number of firearm background checks they conduct are continuing to climb.
From 2019 to 2020, background checks increased by nearly 40 percent, from 28 million to 39 million.
In Iowa, gun shop owners say demand from the public is growing.
"Are we higher than we typically are in June, July and August? Yes," says Bloom.
Bloom anticipates all types of ammo will be short stocked for quite awhile, especially ammunition for hunting and shooting sports.
"It's going to be hard to get ammo on a consistent basis for another year in my opinion. It's because the back log is so far, their just never going to be able to keep up," Bloom said.

GRANDMOTHER PROTECTS GRANDCHILD WITH GUN FROM HOME INVADERS FOR OVER AN HOUR AS SHE WAITS FOR POLICE
SAN ANTONIO — Protecting your family, especially young children can be one of the most important things we do as adults. An alleged attempted burglary left a San Antonio grandmother helpless, hunkered down with her young grandson, waiting for more than an hour for police to respond.
Now she is wondering if there is anything she could have done to get the police to her home sooner.
Grandmother hunkers down with gun waiting for SAPD.
Dr. Joann Murphey was washing dishes just before 10 pm on July 16th when two unknown men walked into her gated yard and into her courtyard. One of them knocked on a window. His face was only 3 feet away from hers - only separated by glass.
"I asked him to leave. He refused. I told him I was calling the police. He threw up his hands and said, ‘I'm coming in.’”
At this point, Murphey ran towards her room, the whole time the two men could see her every move, her house is all windows looking into that enclosed courtyard.
“I turned off all the lights, went to my bedroom, closed the blinds because you also can see in my bedroom from where he was, and called 911," says Murphey.
"When you called 911 to the time they showed up. The officer showed up, how long was that?” Yami asked. “An excess of an hour, maybe an hour and 15 minutes. I can't tell you specifically, but over an hour,” says Murphey.
“What did you do for that long? How worried were you because you were with your grandson,” Yami asked. “I was with my grandson hunkered down hiding behind some furniture. I called 911 again, 30 minutes later,” says Murphey. "I then managed to trip my alarm system, and they called me and said they were sending the police. And I got my weapon out. And I sat on the floor, pretty scared."

SAF ANNOUNCES NEW TV CAMPAIGN TO DEFEAT BIDEN’S GUN GRAB
“Joe Biden is no longer hiding his real intentions,” to ban semiautomatic rifles and handguns, the Second Amendment Foundation says in a new 60-second TV message that will be broadcast on nearly two dozen cable networks nationwide beginning next week.
Biden revealed his agenda in a stunning remark made during a Townhall program aired by CNN. Responding to a question about guns and crime, Biden responded, “The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a, whether it’s a 9mm pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous. I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things…”
“This was Joe Biden in a remarkably candid moment,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “He acknowledged to the entire country that he wants to ban not only the most popular rifle in America today, but also the type of pistol used by millions of law-abiding citizens for personal protection and home defense.
“When people view our new TV ad, they won’t have to take our word for it. They can listen to the words from Biden’s own mouth,” he said.
“Biden was, for once, honest enough to reveal his true agenda,” Gottlieb continued, “and we’re going to vigorously oppose his schemes by educating and alerting the public with our new, hard-hitting message that includes the president making that remark, as well as taking legal action as needed.”
