My client had recently suffered a heart attack; and after he was released from hospital, he wanted to discuss the information the Doctors had given him, with me. I had the look at the information handed out to my client in the hospital. The first thing I read was: “ENJOY HEALTHY EATING” (I couldn’t agree more with that sentence!) Then it went like this: Have 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables daily. Have wholegrain cereals, bread, rice and pasta. Choose lean meats and low fat dairy foods. Eat fish at least 2 times per week. Drink plenty of water. Use moderate amounts of mono and poly unsaturated oils and margarines. (For example olive, canola or sunflower.) Before I go any further, I just want to say that I ONLY AGREE WITH POINT 4 and 5: EAT FISH (and even that only in moderation as about 95% of the worlds fish is polluted with heavy metals) AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. Just as I thought the information couldn’t get any worse I read: “avoid full cream dairy foods and cream, sour cream and butter and meat fats.” (This is exactly the type of diet that will destroy my client’s heart and arteries, and feel miserable, depressed and hungry in the process.) “Did you know that in today’s world, children are facing more health challenges than ever recorded in history?" I recently had a seven-year-old client who exemplified this issue. ‘Johnie” constantly argued, making it challenging for his mother to leave him alone with his siblings even for a few minutes. His disruptive behaviour at school, including tantrums and mood swings had earned him the label of being ‘a handful”. Night times weren’t much better. Disrupted sleep had reached concerning levels. When he came to me, the Education Department was considering medical intervention, and I understood their concerns. Upon treating him, I quickly realized that his problems were not purely psychological. His body and subconscious wanted him to behave better, but his immune and nervous systems were severely compromised. Did you know that eagles have the potential to live up to 70 years? However, once they reach around 40 years old, they encounter a critical “health crisis.” Their talons become overly long and inflexible, their beak curves excessively, and their wings become cumbersome, making flying a challenging task. Faced with this dilemma, eagles must make a tough choice: embrace decline and inevitable death or undergo a painful process of renewal. Choosing the latter, the first step in the eagle’s renewal journey involves finding a secure space – nestled in the mountains near a protective wall. The eagle initiates the challenging renewal process by striking the wall with its beak. As the beak breaks, the eagle patiently waits for a new one to grow. Once equipped with a fresh beak, the eagle proceeds to pluck out its worn feathers, allowing new ones to emerge. After enduring five months of wounds, scars, and growth, the eagle celebrates its renewal with a triumphant flight, emerging stronger than ever, capable of soaring the skies for another 30 years. Savouring the Season: Breaking Free from Christmas Binging. Have you ever thought: “If I eat one more mouthful I will burst?” You might find yourself eating breakfast at one family members house, lunch at another and finish with a leftover evening meal somewhere else at Christmas. You are left bursting at the seams, to the point of spilling over. It reminds me of when I was in Holland in 1981. The Christmas and New Year celebrations run well into January. Custom at Grada’s family was to cook olieballen, alias “oil balls”, a deep-fried donut mix. Let me tell you they are delicious, and traditionally only cooked once a year, on new years eve. One of Grada’s brothers had eaten so many olieballen that he became violently ill and missed out on the 12 a.m. fireworks completely, stuck in front of the only toilet in the house, vomiting his heart out. We have probably all been guilty of gorging ourselves with too much yummy cooking, ignoring all our body’s warning signs! So how can we minimize the risk of falling into this yearly trap of overshooting the mark and paying for it afterwards? Growing up I ate rolled oats porridge followed by toast with honey most mornings, not realising my body was converting all those tasty high-starch carbohydrates to sugars. I used to end up with a massive surge of energy, followed by a crash in energy, so I shovelled in more carbs at morning tea time to get my energy back, which was then followed by another inevitable drop just before lunch time. Perhaps you know what I am talking about? You yoyo your way through the day, often feeling full and empty at the same time, and ending up in a state of total YUCK! You have probably heard me say that the cells of our body make energy from either sugars on the one hand or fats on the other. Newborn babies who are fully breastfed (the perfect food for little humans) are making at least 70% of their energy from fats. That’s how they thrive. However, when they are weaned and started on solids, they have to throw their entire metabolism around. Everything is topsy turvy. Instead of living on healthy fats, they now enter the next chapter of their lives, which is often filled with many health challenges, caused by our modern western diet. (Advocated by well-meaning, but ignorant clinic nurses, dieticians, and paediatricians.) From this time on, they are generally fed 80 to 90% carbs and sugars (think mashed potatoes, porridge, breads, pasta, fruits, vegetables, fruit juices, mashed banana, grapes and sugar laden processed food) This is a recipe for disaster, but for some reason we never question it. What do swollen ankles have to do with your health ? * Have you ever sat down, removed your socks and shoes, and it looked as if there was a rubber band around your ankle from where your socks were all day? *OR, when you reach and push down on your foot, ankle, or lower shinbone, and when you take your finger away, the finger depression is still there… *You might even have aches and pains in your feet and legs, and it doesn’t go away with exercise or wearing compression stockings. These symptoms of swelling and extra fluid pooling in the tissues around your feet and ankles point to circulation issues. The worst-case scenario is that it could lead to clots or a cardiac event. Heart and cardiovascular issues are usually preceded by a decline in kidney function, or stress building up in your kidneys. So let me go all the way back to the start of the problem. Often fluid retention is caused by dehydration or lack of water and minerals. Today, I’m going to expose three harmful foods that are likely in your cupboards, right now, that could be putting a dagger through your health goals. All three foods are labelled and marketed as “health foods”. Today, I’m also going to show you my four natural weight loss helpers. These four natural solutions are not diet tricks, although many of my clients will tell you they work like magic. What they do is improve your digestion and help you process food with maximum efficiency. Let’s start with the 3 foods that are detrimental to your health. Harmful food number one is yogurt! Beware of any low-fat yogurt, as well as fruit yoghurt, it has more sugar than coke! Also, beware of any yogurt claiming to give you probiotic benefits when yogurt is pasteurized, it kills off many of those good bacteria. Unless you’re making your yogurt at home, you’re not going to get enough probiotic benefits to heal and seal your gut. Harmful food number two is breads! Whole grain bread is just as bad for you as white bread. Most bread contain large amounts of the number one fat-forming ingredient, high fructose corn syrup as well as Bromide, which makes you fat as sluggish. Fructose is a chemical that isn’t recognized by our brains, high fructose corn syrup confuses your ghrelin, which is the hormone that tells you when you’re hungry. It also disrupts leptin production, which is the IgM full hormone. When these two hormones are out of whack you never know when you’re full. So when you eat yoghurt with fructose and bread with corn syrup, your body tells you to eat more and more and you will never feel satisfied. That brings me to my number three: Cereals, also called serial killers. Sugar is usually the second ingredient, and the manufacturer often adds corn syrup, sugar cane fiber, and fructose, which is a recipe for plain old weight gain if you ask me. Parenting is probably the most demanding ‘job’ in the world, and the challenges have only intensified during the last few years. As the world moves beyond the pandemic, parents are finding themselves grappling with the threat of parental burnout. This syndrome is characterized by 3 things: *Emotional exhaustion, *Depersonalization, *And, a decrease in self-fulfillment. My client had driven for three hours for her session at the Purple House. By the time she arrived I had to hold her arm, she was so unsteady on her feet. She hadn’t been able to sit, stand or lie down in any position without pain for over a year. Her medical records revealed the following: Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, fibromyalgia, Irritable bowel, asthma, hiatus hernia, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. Unravelling the secrets of healing.
Did you know that your body has a method when it comes to healing? It heals itself from the top down, and from the inside out. This is according to the Law of Hering, a 17th Century Homeopath, who made many observations about the effectiveness of natural healing. How ignoring your instincts could kill you.
A few years ago we adopted Millie and Mildred. The two ducks waddled around inseparably, each mimicking the other. If one quacks the other quacks. Once, a light aircraft flew directly overhead. We heard the drone of the engine approaching. The quacking intensified and then stopped. I couldn’t help laughing as I watched the two earth-bound white birds. They both had their heads on the side with one eye pointing skyward, watching the bright red plane fly by. They would look at one another with a “ quack”, then cock their heads again to spy the plane as if to say “How the heck can that be?” It was hilarious. The previous owners had wanted a good home for their ducks. They came and checked out our place and were happy to see we had a dam so the ducks had somewhere to swim. The day they arrived we let them go near the dam. We had other ducks there and I hand fed them all some grain. The newcomers wanted nothing to do with potential friends or the water and headed straight in the opposite direction. They set up home close to our back door, all the time quacking together as they fossicked happily for grubs, snails and other treasures! Every day, they demand a few handfuls of grain, pecking at my shoes whenever I venture near the chook-run where the feed is kept. They quack as if to say, “Hey what about us?” One day, I decided to let them enjoy a swim, so I caught Millie and Mildred and threw them on the dam. Well, they almost walked on water! They got such a shock, they flapped their wings frantically trying not to drown, and before I knew it, they were back near the back door. I don’t think they knew what it was, having been reared in town with nowhere to swim. They had lost their natural instincts. They didn’t take ‘like a duck to water’! It got me thinking about us humans. We are afraid of storms that bring us much needed water. We mistrust the trees that tower over us, scared they will fall on us. And when we cut them all down the rain stops and we have a desert. For some reason we have lost our instincts that tell us that Mother Nature has our back.
