This bonus baby was far from planned and honestly it has taken me a bit of time to get excited about this pregnancy, though I believe every baby is gift and I don't take that for granted. I just didn't feel ready in a million ways so my fears were overwhelming. Not to mention the fact that I found out about the new baby right as we began our Stay-At-Home order for Covid 19 so I was experiencing a whirlwind of nausea, fatigue and hormones all while adjusting to life stuck at home with little ones. It was challenging for sure. Either way we are grateful for another opportunity to grow our family. As for the gender reveal .. I would not normally have chosen to find out the gender of our new baby this early but when the doctor asked if I wanted to know this time, because she had received the results of my blood test, I immediately said yes. For me knowing the gender helps me to connect with the idea of the new baby. There has been so much fear, anxiety, and vomiting connected to this surprise pregnancy and knowing the gender of my child has helped me to understand how worth it this all is. I will make another video sharing openly about my process of finding out I am pregnant and how I handled my difficult feelings about the baby, but that video won't be as happy as this one and we wanted to keep this centered on goodness and celebration. As the pregnant mother of a 4 year old and a nearly 11 month old - who have all been stuck at home together since March - there are A LOT of feelings happening over here. But even so, our family is choosing gratitude and joy as we prepare to grow together later this year. Thank you for celebrating with us! I am so thankful for you :) @bprins In this video I answer: What are we doing for work right now? Why don't I speak to same sex parents and dads? So how did this happen? Where did all of these people come from and why are they here? Well that's the big miracle isn't it? This channel began 5ish years ago as a way for me to share my life with people. I was getting ready to have my first baby, a daughter, and my world was changing. I left the job I had been working for several years where I was directing the Los Angeles location of an organization which supports professionals working in fashion and entertainment. We moved into a new home after having lived a like a bit like gypsies for years, running Calling All Skaters and traveling around Los Angeles with a group of skateboarders, sleeping on floors and using skateboarding to invest in the lives of young people. I also had been directing a women's ministry, teaching girls and women in different nations about beauty, identity and value. It was an exciting time of life, but having a new baby and moving into a real home meant my life would shift from things like traveling, leading and speaking, to nursing, baby-holding, and significantly less interactions with people other than my family. I missed connecting with people and the joy I felt encouraging others. Youtube gave me a new outlet to do just that. I was able to build a channel where documenting life and encouraging people could coincide. My channel was not always a "mom channel". I made a few popular videos early on, like "How to Have a Baby Without an Epidural", but the bulk of my videos were about different parts of my life, like travel, friendship, and random videos I made with Shaun about relationships. After we moved back to Los Angeles in 2018 after living in Spain for two years, we were expecting the arrival of our second child, a son. At that we relaunched my Youtube channel and from there the motherhood theme began to take shape. Once Wilson was born I started making videos to help parents care for their new babies, because it is what I wish existed when I had my daughter Eloise. I felt so lost and alone and I wanted my channel to help ease those feelings for moms and parents in general. My Baby 101 videos were born from there. The heart of my channel is to cheer people on and offer support in their parenting journey. It is my hope to make videos about other elements of my life, because I am much more than just a mom, but for now, with two young kids, I only have so much time to film and edit, so the videos will remain focused on things related to raising babies. It is my joy to serve people online and I am always grateful for the messages and comments I receive sharing how my online presence has positively impacted others. THANK YOU. Postpartum depression, baby blues, emotions after having a baby and how to have realistic expectations about being a new mom. I share my experience from when I was a new mom, symptoms of PPD and Baby Blues and some empathetic tips on overcoming baby blues. I have been getting messages recently from moms who are wondering if something is wrong with them because they recently had their babies but they are not happy. They wonder if they are sick, they don't know if it is postpartum depression, baby blues, or if they are just simply bad moms because they don't enjoy their new role as mommy. As much as I wish I could respond personally to each message I am living the quarantined life and juggling too many things as it is, so this video is my heartfelt response to those women. When I had my first baby I too struggled with feeling like I was broken. I had anxiety, I couldn't sleep, I didn't like being a mom, I felt lost, trapped, I wondered if motherhood would ever get better. I scoured the internet looking for hope and found very little. As time went on my baby got a little more sturdy, and I got a little more rest, I began to feel more like myself and eventually... 4 years later .. I had a 2nd baby. My postpartum experience the 2nd time around has been significantly different. I have a better understanding now that everything about the new mom journey comes in temporary stages, even though the stages feel milesssss long when you are inside of them (sleep regressions anyone?). Becoming a mom is a full on life flip, hormones go crazy, our body grows, stretches, & then once the baby arrives it bleeds, leaks, and gradually shrinks back to a new maternal version of itself. Everything is different. While we love our babies & are grateful for the gift of new life, it is still a scary, fragile, sensitive & exhausting season of life which is allowed to make us feel crazy sometimes. This video is an "I see you" to struggling moms. It is a friendly, "You are normal," to any mom who feels like they are suffering in their new role. Along with all of the normal new mom challenges, there is a a unique & new intensity right now as we are navigating a global pandemic. Family is not able to come visit and help us out as readily as before. Baby showers were cancelled. There aren't guests in the hospital to cheer us on and bring us donuts. Loneliness is exaggerated because we literally can't hug as freely as we are used to, and we are expressing our feelings through screens rather than in person on couches with cups of hot coffee in hand. If you are a new mom, living the new mom season in the midst of Covid19, you are doing SO SO good. Give yourself grace. Allow yourself space to feel crazy or ask for more help than normal. You CAN do this and motherhood does get easier and more fulfilling in time. How do we play with our babies? How do we educate our babies? Let's talk about baby toys, child development, optimal learning environments & how to grow our baby's brain right from birth. Hi friends! When it comes to child development and education our babies I honestly do not spend much time thinking about how I will help to grow my baby's brain. I love my children and I know their educations matter, but between the responsibility of day to day tasks, and the overall goal of keeping my kids alive and loves .. very little of my mental space goes to asking questions like .. what is the optimal learning environment for my baby?.. how can I teach my baby to crawl, grasp, walk, & think curiously? .. how can I help children be explorers who use their imaginations & have longer attention spans? .. In this video I talk about baby play and how we as parents and educators can be more intentional about our style of play and the toys we use to engage our babies and young children. Montessori has some brilliant ideas, originating from Marta Montessori of Italy, so I have tried to incorporate some of their beliefs into this video to support you in educating your child. I don't personally believe in spending a lot of money of baby toys.. I also don't think you need to read to your child every night.. or at the hospital when the baby is born.. or really anything that is going to cause further exhaustion or stress to a new parent's life ... that is not my style. I love the idea of incorporating little intentional moments of exploration into your child's life, in nearly effortless ways. From creating a simple beautiful environment for baby to spend time in, with less toys .. which means less clean up for you! To adding songs, stories, laughter, and just general talking to your normal everyday routines. There are easy things you can do to .. "grow your baby's brain" .. if that is your concern, and there are fun options for educating your little ones that don't have to be costly or tiring. YOU ARE A GREAT MOM. Have grace with yourself and do what you can to enjoy the motherhood role .. however tiring, confusing, emotional, fun and crazy it sometimes is. Thank you for letting me support you in it! Hi friends! I am NOT a baby feeding expert, nor a doctor, nor a nutritionalist- I am just a mom sharing my experiences with people on the internet. I am doing my best to raise my kids & am hoping that I can encourage other moms along the way. Please keep that in mind as you watch this video and all others. My son Wilson began eating solids at 4 months old so in this video I will share how we did it with him and what we do now that he is 7 months old. He is still primarily breast fed but we are also offering him a variety of other soft foods. My daughter Eloise didn't want purees at all, she went from breastmilk to more solid forms of food when she was a bit older .. like 9+ months. Kids are different and have different preferences. At one point in the video I think I say something about steaming potatoes .. haha I have never steamed a potato .. no clue where that came from .. you can bake or mash a potato but steaming is a good way to prep carrots & broccoli. I was 36 weeks pregnant when I received a message from our bank that we had hit $0 in our checking account. (Insert swear words here.) Thankfully we have savings to tap into but we immediately had to switch around our lifestyle in order to take care of the needs of our growing family. We live in a home with other people to help keep the cost of rent low. We also made a series of other decisions that helped us provide for our new son. This video shares more personal details from our mini financial crisis and a bunch of our money saving tips. We were able to rebuild our savings account by roughly $6,000 in 6 months and this video tells you how we did that. I will also add here that our monthly bills are as low as possible, which helps minimize spending. I know money stuff can be scary but taking care of your new baby is possible no matter what amount of money you have in your account right now! As with anything else, I really believe that if I can do it, anyone can do it, because I am not a natural at this stuff. My experience with both babies - first 13 minutes Tips for sleep training - starts at 13:14 We first sleep trained my daughter around 7 months and we just sleep trained my baby boy at 5 months. Unfortunately I feel like sleep training is something we consistently have to do because it is so easy to develop bad habits & regress from our amazing sleep. I am not a baby sleep expert, honestly I'm not really an expert at anything, but I love helping people & I am honored to be a part of your life when it comes to this mom stuff. When I had my first baby I had no clue what I was doing but with my second it has been significantly easier because it's not all brand new. My hope in sharing these videos with you is that they'll help you along the way, and even if your mom style is totally different than mine I hope you are encouraged to know that if I can be a mom anyone can be one.. because I am totally out of my element here.
