My sister Meredith Bates is a nurse and a mother of 2. She recently had her son Jack at 31 weeks. He was in the NICU for 61 days. Her daughter Loewy (pronounced “Low- ee”) is 5 years old. Loewy was breastfed for 2.5 years. Meredith was told she would stop breastfeeding when she was ready but she never showed signs of being ready. One day Meredith stopped nursing her and that was the first night she slept through the night on her own. Meredith had hoped to breastfeed Jack too but due to health complications the breast milk was going into his lungs. He was formula fed and Meredith was pumping for months. She got mastitis multiple times, was exhausted, had emergency surgery due to an IUD complication (see my last video) and was told that Jack likely wouldn’t be able to breastfeed until he was around 6 months old. By that time Meredith would be back to work and Jack would have to learn breastfeeding from scratch. Watch this video to find out what she did and why. Also … we know fed is best .. but the shame and disappointment are still real. If you’re a formula feeding parent be encouraged that you’re doing great. Feed your baby, love your baby, and take care of yourself. You’re a very good mom. My little sister, Meredith, is a nurse and she is here to share her recent IUD saga. This video is lighthearted and fun but the story is crazy. In this video my sister shares about how her copper IUD recently went through the cervix, perforated her uterus and was laying on her colon. After multiple doctor visits she had to get emergency surgery to get it removed. Everything is fine now and YOU were amazing at showing her love and support. Less emotional support for moms. Less clarity about how to help the new mom. New moms struggle to give up control of our baby to others. We don’t sleep or eat as well because our life becomes about our children. We struggle to prioritize our own needs because we are so focused on the needs of our children. We need help. To remembers to advocate for ourselves. Ask for help. Look for opportunities to share about our experiences as a mother - whether good or bad - share about pregnancy, labor, delivery, all of it. Get a counselor if you need it. Start a YouTube channel or blog. Talk to family. Give yourself grace because hormones really can make you feel crazy. Lack of sleep can too. And the fact that all your days are blurring into each other right now. You’re normal and amazing. If you are pregnant or a baby/toddler parent looking for a baby carrier these are the ones my family recommends. None of these brands are paying me to share about them i just genuinely love each of the carriers. Baby wearing is great for getting things done but also just to soothe a clingy baby or bond with your child as they grow. It takes a few tries to get the hang of wearing your baby but using a mirror helps with putting them in it and you can always ask a stranger or loved one for help depending on who is around. You can breastfeed in a lot of carriers too which helps! Wearing your toddler is helpful for hikes or for our family it helped when we lived in Europe and used public transportation to get around. This happened during the time that i found out i was pregnant with my third baby and Covid shutdowns had just begun in Los Angeles. It was all crazy. My family knew we wanted to start a business for years so we had savings to invest in this adventure. In this video we share how much money we put in, what steps we took to start our business, advice for moms wanting to start a small business, how much money we have made, what is working with our business, what is causing stress, and tips for keeping a small business alive right now. Enjoy! PS. We used Legal Zoom to create an LLC and Shopify to launch our shop. We use Faire as a resource for wholesale products. Sarah Grunder built our website and we manage everything ourselves. We hired an accounting firm to oversee our bookkeeping and a friend to help us with Facebook ads. We don’t take a paycheck yet and anyone who helps us pack boxes is compensated with food or products. These are our tips for putting two young kids in one room, we will probably have more to share after this transition is finished. We found a sound machine to be helpful and we planned for the first few nights to be more tiring than normal. Let us know your tips! We would love to hear what has worked for you! It is always vulnerable sharing personal details of my life on a public platform but it is especially intimidating sharing things related to my family because I want to protect them and I anticipate getting weird comments either related to the topic of homosexuality or the topic of Christianity. Both tend to be polarizing and the internet is a strange place where people act like it is okay to be mean, though it is unlikely they would actually say anything at all in real life. After filming this video earlier in the week I had a few anxious nights where I considered not posting it at all because I feared what kind of response it would get. I also realized there is a lot more I would love to share but didn't have time. Maybe I can put more details in a second video. I suppose it depends on how much you guys care about this topic. In the video I said that my parents separated in the 3rd grade, which is true-ish, but my other mom was in my life since the 1st grade. So for me she has been a maternal figure since I was 6 or 7 years old and my younger sister was 4. I am sharing that because sometimes people say I don't have full picture of being raised by two moms because I was "older" when my mom began living a gay lifestyle. I also have a dad because my mom was married to a man before she was with my other mom, and I have brothers because my other mom was married to a man before she began living as a homosexual. My moms are not my only gay family members, I have two aunts who are also lesbians and some distant cousins who are gay. I'm pretty sure one of my cousins is trans, though now that I am typing it I don't know if he is my real cousin or my half brothers cousin. I have a half brother too, who I did not mention in this video, but he is from my Dad's first marriage. For those who are asking about my Christian beliefs and how they affect my view of my family or homosexuality in general here are some books, podcasts, videos and articles I have consumed in the last year. If we were alone over coffee and speaking from the heart I would invite you deeper into my story, but since this is public and not intimate I prefer to just share resources and allow you to form your own world-view. In this video I am not going to give a black or white answer on whether or not it is okay to post your children on your social media platforms because I believe it’s a deeply personal decision but no matter what you choose to do the highest priority ought to be placed on protecting our kids. For every family that will look a bit different. For mine we post our kids, more so when they are little and less as they grow. I want to give my kids the space to have privacy and personal lives apart from the camera. My husband and I consider all of this stuff on a regular basis and change things as we go. She also left the hospital during labor to take her nursing exam in order to become an RN! On the way she stopped at Starbucks where a lady was having a heart attack and Meredith helped save her life! She took the exam ... went back to the hospital .. found out she passed! And then had her baby boy. She is a hero. We filmed this video in the morning because she struggles most in the evenings and it wouldn’t work to film while she cries like crazy. The mornings are easiest for her body which is why she does so well here. The main thing we do to help her is hold her upright for roughly 30 minutes after each feeding. We also give her breastmilk mixed with rice cereal in bottles at night because it’s easier for her to keep the heavier milk down. She also sleeps on an elevated bed.
