On Nov. 29, 2021, the Alliance Christian School District (West-Mont Christian Academy and Berks Christian School) invited me to train the faculty and administration in addressing students with same-sex attraction or gender identity conflicts. They were new to teachings on this topic, so I started with building a foundation of understanding God's design for our sexuality, then seeing how issues in development and the aggressive nature of the LGBTQ agenda impacts impressionable youth. I presented on 10/16/21 at the first-ever Association of Christians in Health and Human Services Conference in Indianapolis, teaming up with my colleague, Daren Mehl, to dispel myths about so-called "conversion therapy." This past Sunday, 9/26/21, I spoke at my new church, Hopewell Community Church, in Pottstown, PA. Pastor Bruce told me the topic would be Jesus as our object of worship, and then said to deliver it how the Holy Spirit leads me. In Becket Cook's editorial on the "Pray Away" Netflix documentary, he conceded points made by the film and joined in criticizing the work and mission of Exodus International and consequently the various member ministries and counselors that help Christians with unwanted same-sex attractions. Attacks on transformational, ex-gay ministry and SOCE or reparative therapy are becoming increasingly common from different streams in the Church. In today's video, I will be responding to the criticisms from Christians in the Renounce column, those who reject a gay identity while focusing on repentance and mortification of sinful desires while also discouraging counseling efforts (ministry or therapeutic) to modify the attractions or resolve underlying wounds. As a therapist that works with men dealing with unwanted same-sex attraction, it was inevitable I would give a response to the new Netflix documentary, "Pray Away," which is touted as a "definitive documentary" on "conversion therapy." Though neither myself nor any of my colleagues use the term, our opponents would label us "conversion therapists" because we offer counseling to people struggling with their sexuality in a way that facilitates the potential for change. As a therapist that works with men dealing with unwanted same-sex attraction, it was inevitable I would give a response to the new Netflix documentary, "Pray Away," which is touted as a "definitive documentary" on "conversion therapy." Though neither myself nor any of my colleagues use the term, our opponents would label us "conversion therapists" because we offer counseling to people struggling with their sexuality in a way that facilitates the potential for change. Manwell Reyes, from the Christian hip hop band Group 1 Crew, is apparently another Christian influencer that is deconstructing his faith. And as usual, with deconstruction comes some sort of shift in sexual ethics. In his Convos with Manny podcast, he shared an interview with a patron from his Nights at the Round Table Patreon community, Melinda, who shares her story of identifying as gay and then feeling unloved by her church but still loved by God. Manwell claims that her saying she's still loved by God is triggering to conservative, Bible-believing Christians. I say that's a huge strawman argument. When Lil Nas X released his song Montero (Call Me By Your Name) and his Satanic shoes just before Easter 2021, it caused a stir. And then Jonathan Pageau offered a symbolic analysis of the Satanic tropes in both the Montero music video and the show WandaVision. Pageau not only draws out how the heart of Satanism is pride, but his analysis inspired me to further expound on how Lil Nas X's song is the perfect anthem for gay pride. Our nation continues to deal with strife regarding police and black citizens with several incidents in the public consciousness in the past month. I prefer to base my reactions off the evidence and avoid listening to commentary and simplistic narratives. In this video, I watch the footage from the altercation between Army Lieutenant Nazario (of black and Hispanic descent) and Virginia police officers Gutierrez and Crocker that occurred in December. Considering the whole incident, with some insight as a therapist, provides a valuable reflection for us all--whether you #BacktheBlue or chant #BlackLivesMatter. I hope that it is clear to everyone that Officer Gutierrez used excessive force, but beyond that, we can learn from both sides.
