Highlands is an incorporated town in Macon County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Located on a plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains, within the Nantahala National Forest, it lies mostly in southeastern Macon County and slightly in southwestern Jackson County, in the Highlands and Cashiers Townships, respectively. The permanent population was 1,014 at the 2020 census.[4]
Dry Falls, also known as Upper Cullasaja Falls, is a 65-foot (20.1 m) waterfall located in the Nantahala National Forest, northwest of Highlands, North Carolina.
Geology
Dry Falls flows on the Cullasaja River through the Nantahala National Forest. It is part of a series of waterfalls on an 8.7-mile (14 km) stretch of the river that eventually ends with Cullasaja Falls. Dry Falls flows over an overhanging bluff that allows visitors to walk up under the falls and remain relatively dry when the waterflow is low, hence its name. Visitors will get wet if the waterflow is high.
History
The falls has been called Dry Falls for a long time, but has also gone by a few other names, including High Falls, Pitcher Falls, and Cullasaja Falls.[3] It received its name because supposedly, you can walk behind the falls and stay dry, however this is only true in periods of low flow.
Visiting The Falls
Dry Falls is located on the side of U.S. Highway 64 3.1 miles (5.0 km) north of Highlands, North Carolina. There is a parking area on the side of the road, where visitors can park before walking the short path with stairs to the falls.
During 2008–2009 the Forest Service made improvements to the parking area, which included renovation and expansion and the addition of bathroom facilities. A new walkway and overlook were also constructed adjacent to the parking area.[4]
Bridal Veil Falls is a 45-foot (13.7 m) waterfall located in the Nantahala National Forest, northwest of Highlands, North Carolina. With a short curve of roadway located behind the falls, it had the distinction of being the only waterfall in the state that one could drive a vehicle under, however this has since been closed and is now used for pedestrian access only.

Clingmans Dome is a mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina in the southeastern United States. Its name in Cherokee is Kuwahi or Kuwohi[4] (ᎫᏩᎯ or ᎫᏬᎯ), meaning "mulberry place." At an elevation of 6,643 feet (2,025 m), it is the highest mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the highest point in the state of Tennessee, and the highest point along the 2,192-mile (3,528 km) Appalachian Trail. It is also the third highest point in mainland Eastern North America, after Mount Mitchell (6,684 feet or 2,037 metres) and Mount Craig (6,647 feet or 2,026 metres).
Description
Clingmans Dome has two subpeaks: 6,560-foot (2,000 m) Mount Buckley to the west and 6,400-foot (1,950 m) Mount Love to the east. The headwaters of several substantial streams are located on the slopes of Clingmans Dome, namely Little River on the north slope, and Forney Creek and Noland Creek (both tributaries of the Tuckasegee River) on the south slope. The mountain is located entirely within the watershed of the Tennessee River.[5]
Clingmans Dome is protected as part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A paved road connects it to U.S. Highway 441 at Newfound Gap 6.7 miles (10.8 km) away.[6] The 45-foot (14 m) concrete observation tower, built in 1959 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers a panoramic view of the mountains. An air quality monitoring station, operated by the Environmental Protection Agency, is the second highest in eastern North America.
The Southern Appalachian spruce-fir forest which covers Clingmans Dome occurs only at the highest elevations in the southeastern United States, and has more in common with forests at northern latitudes than with the forests in the adjacent valleys. Clingmans Dome stands prominently above the surrounding terrain, rising nearly 5,000 feet (1,500 m) from base to summit. The forest on and around Clingmans Dome has experienced a large die-off of Fraser fir caused by the non-native insect, balsam woolly adelgid.[5]

9 Beginner Standup Paddleboard Tips | SUP
Standup paddle boarding looks much harder than it actually is. While there are many things I wish I knew when first using SUP, I gathered a list of 9 useful paddle-boarding tips that will make your first trip easier and more enjoyable than most beginners.
My SUP Paddleboard - https://amzn.to/3HK3R0T
Where To Set The Board In The Water
So your inflatable paddle board is all pumped up, unless you have a hard board, you walk up to shore, put your board in the water, get on top, and you’re not going anywhere because your fin is stuck in the ground. While this mistake might seem obvious, it happens more frequently than not to newbies. So before you break the fin to your new SUP, put the board further out into the water before climbing on.
When You Get On, Start With Your Knees
Depending on where you load in, you might want to get a pair of water shoes to protect your feet from a rocky river. But once you climb onto the board, start with your knees, straighten forward, and center yourself within the board. Most SUPs have a handle that marks the center.
How To Standup & Where On The Board
While you’re in a pushup position centered on the board, lay your paddle flat horizontally in front of you, and use your arms to bring one leg up centered near the handle, and the next leg perpendicular. Make sure you’re using your arms to keep yourself and the board balanced in the process of standing.
When standing, make sure both of your feet are facing forward. Also, many people think that it’s easier to stand up while moving so row a couple of times on your knees than begin standing.
Don’t Stand Sideways Like Surfboard
The very first thing I did once I got my paddle board in the water, is stand on it like a surfboard. What I should’ve done was try to find an article like this to know how not to stand on a paddleboard.
Unless you’re surfing waves with a lot of forward-momentum, keeping balanced while standing sideways was annoyingly difficult and made my first trip more stressful than enjoyable. It took until my 2nd trip to find out the magical secret of standing forward, and it was drastically easier.
Which Way Does Paddle Face?
Here is yet another tip I wish I knew beforehand. I actually didn’t find this out until after our first SUP travel video. But have your paddle faced away from you where the paddle slant is curved towards the front of your SUP board.
Since finding this out, my speed improved, ease of paddling improved, maneuverability improved, and the tracking drastically improved. Tracking means the ability to keep the board straight while paddling.
Taller You Are, the Larger The Board Should Be
So this tip is suitable if you didn’t pick out your board yet. But a general rule of thumb, the larger or taller you are, the larger the board you’ll need. But if you’re a whopping 5’4″ like me you can get whatever you want.
How To Properly Fall
If you find yourself losing balance, just purposely fall into the water. Don’t try to catch yourself or fall on the board. Falling on the board hurts. Fall into the water, it’s fun and doesn’t hurt.
Start Off In Calm Water
There are so many incredible places to paddle, but if you’re new, start off in calm water. It wouldn’t be long till you naturally develop muscle memory and balance that’ll free you to paddle where you please.
Beginners Consider Wearing A Life Jacket & Ankle Leash
And lastly, a lot of you don’t want to hear this, but I recommend a coast guard certified life jacket and an ankle leash if the SUP comes with it when starting. Along with that, it might also be wise to bring a fellow paddleboarder or even a kayaker to come along.

6 Differences Between a Kayak & Paddleboard | What Should You Get?
What should you get, a Kayak or SUP? In this video, I'm going to compare the 6 primary differences in hopes that it helps you in your decision of which of the two you should get.
My SUP - https://amzn.to/3iV2aDi
My Kayak - https://pelicansport.com/products/kayak-bandit-100nxt-kvf10p301
Kayaking you’re sitting whereas paddle boarding you’re standing up.
You can also sit on a SUP but it doesn’t have a seat like a kayak. Therefore, kayaking is more comfortable since you’re sitting. But some people say SUP is more active and adventurous than standing up. However, many have issues with balance, particularly taller people.
Speed. Kayaking you have dual blades on each side of the paddle whereas an SUP only has one blade.
Considering you can row on each side of your paddle while kayaking, it’s easier to go faster and burns less energy than paddle boarding. But if you want to get a workout while having fun, not only do you need to row more with an SUP, but balancing the entire time also gives you a mini workout after a while.
Since most reliable SUPs are inflatable, they’re much easier to transport.
Most reliable kayaks are made of plastic and are non-inflatable. Paddle boards are the exact opposite where most reliable SUPs are inflatable. Contrary to popular belief, they’re more impact resistant, stable, durable, and last longer than standard epoxy hard paddle boards. On top of that, they’re more affordable.
So because of the much higher chances, you’re going to get an inflatable SUP and a standard plastic kayak, in most cases, transporting an SUP is going to be drastically easier than transporting a kayak.
For example, before getting my kayak, my car didn’t have a roof rack. I had to purchase and set up a stand-alone roof rack, and then get the separate kayak racks. After that, I was able to load my kayaks but loading them is time-consuming in it itself. Where on the other hand, it takes seconds to throw my SUP case in the trunk or backseat.
But if you’re leaning more towards a kayak rather than an SUP but don’t want the transportation hassle of a standard non-inflatable, you can always look into an inflatable kayak. However, it’s not something I personally recommend if you want to kayak anything serious.
Kayaks are more suited for fishing
If you want to fish, you’re better off with a kayak for a few reasons. One, kayaks have a lot more bungee space to hold fishing gear Where SUPs have a lot of room, but can’t really secure your items like a kayak. Most of them have fishing rod holders. And it’s easier to fish in a kayak seat than standing or sitting on a paddle board.
SUP Yoga
This probably won’t apply to most of you, but yoga on a SUP is possible and very fun if you do yoga. But yoga on a kayak is not at all possible.
Rapids
Kayaks are a way better choice for paddling rapids, whereas paddle boards aren’t necessarily designed for them. While it is possible to paddle rapids on an SUP, you’ll usually find professional riders doing it more often than begginer or intermediate riders. It’s also much safer going through rapids sitting in a kayak than on a paddleboard.
My Opinion | What Do I Enjoy More
So I have both, and if you want to know my personal opinion, I enjoy stand up paddle boarding more simply because I think it’s more fun. There’s something about floating on water while standing up that I really enjoy and many people also feel the same.
However, some of my friends who’ve tried paddle boarding say trying to balance srtanding is actually stressful and takes the fun out of it since they’re only worried of falling.

Hiking DuPont State Park, Tripple Falls, High Falls, Hooker Falls, & Bald Rock Heritage Preserve
On an epic jam-packed day, we explored 3 awesome waterfalls of North Carolina's DuPont State Forest; Tripple Falls Where the Filmed the movies " The Last of the Mohicans" & "Hunger Games", High Falls, & Hooker Falls. As a side note, the nature of these hikes was incredible.
We then checked out the graffiti rock overlook of south carolina called bald rock heritage preserve which was my favorite part of the trip. Finally, we ate and hung out at the quaint mountain town of Walhalla, SC.

In the "Hiking Epic Trails" series, we find the coolest landmarks on each hiking trail and give them a name. However, some of them already have a name. In order, the landmarks in this video are Boulder Jump, Tripple Falls, High Falls, Covered Bridge, Hooker Falls. We also checked out Bald Rock Heritage Preserve and Walhalla South Carolina.
Visitors may park at the Hooker Falls parking area, and then hike the Triple Falls / High Falls Trail for roughly 1/2 mile. There are 2 views of the falls, one of the base, where you can only see the bottom falls, and a second upper overlook that lets you view the entire falls.
DuPont State Forest may also allow access to the falls by vehicle to handicapped persons. Contact the DuPont State Forest for more information.
As with all waterfalls, visitors are strongly discouraged from climbing the rocks near the falls. There have been many deaths at Triple Falls.[1]
Bald Rock Heritage Preserve is a state preserve in Cleveland, South Carolina, within the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area and managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. It is near Caesars Head State Park and overlooks Table Rock.[1][2] Bald Rock is accessible via footbridge from a parking area off of U.S. Route 276.[1] The property is closed at night (sunset to sunrise). No graffiti, alcohol, drugs, fires (or fireworks), camping, or littering is allowed on the property.
Triple Falls is a 125-foot (38 m) waterfall located in the DuPont State Forest, southeast of Brevard, North Carolina.

How To Load & Unload A Single Kayak On A Car (By Yourself, Even If You Can't Lift It Over Your Head)
In this example video, the kayak rack I use is the Field & Stream for this example.
How To Load a Single Kayak On A Car’s Flat Roof Rack
-Attach both kayak racks centered and aligned with each other on the roof
-If it has the center bar, fold it down, and secure it
-Place both foam blocks within the racks (Most have them)
-Place kayak centered on the roof racks, with the front of the kayak aiming towards the car’s front. (Most kayaks can be transported either upside down or right side, check your kayaks user manual to be sure)
-Tie and fasten 1 strap on each rack of the first kayak; by putting both ends on the other side of the boat, put the straps through the racks cradle, below the crossbar, back up the cradle, buckle and tighten.
-Either hand tie the excess straps or place them in your car and shut the door.
-Attach the front hook to the car’s front and rear hook to the trunk.
Ideas To Place The Kayak On The Roof By Yourself
Loading a kayak is much easier with a second person. But oftentimes, you don’t have a choice but to load the single kayak by yourself. And the last thing you want is to dread loading the kayaks to the point where you find yourself doing trips less often than you prefer.
As we all know, the loading difficulty depends on how tall or short your vehicle is, how large your kayak is meaning are you capable of lifting it over your head, and something that’s overlooked which is how much you care about your car not getting scratched.
I’m going to tell you right now, I drive a construction car where my car is always getting banged up at my job so I don’t care less about how scratched it gets.
A few different ideas to load your single kayak by yourself without purchasing any other gear.
-Lift it over your head and place it on the Racks. (Depends if you’re capable, how heavy the kayak is, and also how tall your vehicle is.
-Get a towel, and place it on the car near the middle of each rack. Rest the kayak leaning on the towel. Slide the kayak up while rotating the body till it latches on each rack. If you find that the base of the kayak is slipping on the ground, a doormat, or doing it near the grass might work.
If you don’t care about your car getting scratched and can’t lift it, do the same thing as the previous step without the towel.
How To Unload A Kayak From A Car By Yourself
-Remove front & rear hooks
-Remove all straps
-Slide rear off, and gently lie it down on the ground
-Take the kayak body or front from resting on your car and manuever to the ground
-Put both foam blocks and all straps within the vehicle. Because if you lose them, you’re screwed.
Summary
At the end of the day, practice makes perfect. When I started loading the kayak on my car whether I was taking 1 or 2, it was extremely difficult. After about the fifth time it became incredibly easy and much faster.
