Environmental and Epigenetic Influences on Gene Expression - Nature, Nurture & Epigenetics
In this lecture, we will review how new scientific research shows that environmental influences can actually affect whether and how genes are expressed.
The old ideas that genes are “set in stone” or that they alone determine development have been disproven. Nature vs. Nurture is no longer a debate—it’s nearly always both! Nature (biological and genetic influences) vs Nurture (environmental influences beginning in the womb).
Child Development is the scientific study of processes of change and stability in human children (Martorell, 2023).

Reconciliation and Forgiveness - Can We Really Forgive When We Are Deeply Hurt - Social Psychology
In this lecture we will review the concept of Reconciliation and Forgiveness.
Reconciliation and forgiveness serves as a path to restore interpersonal relationships following destructive conflicts. It presents a contrast to focus on retribution emphasized in our society as the primary approach to understanding conflict resolution.
The wounds of interpersonal conflict often remain long after the offending interactions that hurt us have concluded. Most people remember painful memories of hurtful conflicts decades later.
Reconciliation and forgiveness are interpersonal conflict resolution processes, that arise from a mutual interest to come back together with those who have separated by serious conflict.

the Nature of Conflict - Social Psychology
Conflict is an expressed struggle between at least tow interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from others in achieving their goals.
Communication is the medium for conflict management, whether face-to-face, written, or with technology. When we transform communication itself we begin to engage the process of conflict resolution.

Theories of Love - Social Psychology
In this lecture we will review the different Theories of Love.
When we think of love, our thoughts often turn to the great love stories: Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella and the Prince, etc. According to Sternberg, these stories are much more than entertainment. They shape our beliefs about love and relationships, and our beliefs in turn influence our behavior.
Many of these stories have their origins in the culture, in folk tales, literature, theater, films, and television programs. As we experience relationships, our stories evolve, taking into account unexpected events.

Cognitive Dissonance and Self-Consistency – Social Psychology
The Motive to Maintain a Consistent Self: People want to perceive consistency among the specific things the believe, say, and do (micro level of day-to-day experience). It is virtually impossible to be consistent all the time.
Cognitive dissonance theory explains how people react to these micro-level inconsistencies in their thoughts and behavior. According to Festinger’s (1957) Cognitive Dissonance Theory, people have such distaste for perceiving inconsistencies in their beliefs to try to deny those inconsistencies. Two cognitions (e.g., beliefs, attitudes, or perceived actions) are inconsistent with or contradict one another.

Self-Serving Bias, Self-Handicapping & Self-Presentation - Social Psychology
Self-Serving Bias is the tendency to perceive oneself favorably. Self-Serving Attributions – a form of self-serving bias; the tendency to attribute positive outcomes to oneself and negative outcomes to other factors.
The self-serving attribution bias is to make external attributions for bad things that one does, but internal attributions for good thing one does. In other words, people are quick to take credit for their successes and blame the situation for their failures.
