Emerging Adulthood Explained
In this lecture, we will review what it means to be an Emerging Adult.
Emerging adulthood has been proposed as a new life stage between adolescence and young adulthood, lasting roughly from ages 18 to 25.
Five features make emerging adulthood distinctive: identity explorations, instability, self-focus, feeling in-between adolescence and adulthood, and a sense of broad possibilities for the future (open.maricopa.edu).
We will also review The Transition From Adolescence to Adulthood - Emerging adulthood involves two key components of autonomy.

Erik Erikson’s Identity Vs. Role Confusion - Psychosocial Development in Adolescence
In this lecture, we will review the Psychosocial Development in Adolescence; Erik Erikson’s Stages Of Psychosocial Development - Stage 5. Identity Vs. Role Confusion.
The fifth stage of Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development is identity vs. role confusion, and it occurs during adolescence, from about 12-18 years. During this stage, adolescents search for a sense of self and personal identity, through an intense exploration of personal values, beliefs, and goals (McLeod, 2023).
According to Erikson, this is important to forming a strong identity and developing a sense of direction in life. The adolescent mind is essentially a mind or moratorium, a psychosocial stage between childhood and adulthood, between the morality learned by the child and the ethics to be developed by the adult (Erikson, 1963, p. 245).

Cognitive Development in Adolescence – Piaget’s Theory’s - The Formal Operational Stage
In this lecture we will review Cognitive Development in Adolescence to include Piaget’s Theory’s section on The Formal Operational Stage; and a review of an article entitled Cognitive Development in the Teen Years by Stanford Medicine Children’s Health.
What is Cognitive Development? Cognitive development is the process by which we come to acquire, understand, organize, and learn to use information in various ways.
Piaget’s Theory - Jean Piaget is famous for his theories regarding changes in cognitive development that occur as we move from infancy to adulthood (McLeod, 2023).
Cognitive development results from the interplay between innate capabilities (nature) and environmental influences (nurture). Children progress through four distinct stages, each representing varying cognitive abilities and world comprehension: the sensorimotor stage (birth to 2 years), the preoperational stage (2 to 7 years), the concrete operational stage (7 to 11 years), and the formal operational stage (11 years and beyond).

Puberty (Early & Late Onset) - Physical Development in Adolescence
In this lecture, we will review the topic of Puberty - physical development in adolescence (early onset and late onset), and physical growth spurts.
Adolescence is the developmental transition between childhood and adulthood entailing major physical, cognitive and psychosocial changes.
Puberty is the process by which a person attains sexual maturity and the ability to reproduce. Puberty is the period of rapid growth and sexual development that begins in adolescence and starts at some point between ages 8 and 14. While the sequence of physical changes in puberty is predictable, the onset and pace of puberty vary widely (socialsci.libretexts.org).

For children in middle childhood, the social world, particularly the behavior and attitudes of their school peers, has been shown to be an important factor in their educational and mental health outcomes. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, being mentally healthy during childhood means reaching developmental and emotional milestones and learning healthy social skills and how to cope, when there are problems.
What is a mental illness? Mental health is the overall wellness of how you think, regulate your feelings and behave. A mental illness, or mental health disorder, is defined as patterns or changes in thinking, feeling or behaving that cause distress or disrupt a person's ability to function (mayoclinic.org).
How is mental illness in children treated? Common treatment options for children who have mental health conditions include: Psychotherapy and Medication.

Childhood Obesity & Treatments (6-11 years old)
In this lecture, we will review the issue of Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It's particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems that were once considered adult problems — diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Childhood obesity can also lead to poor self-esteem and depression (mayoclinic.org).
Obesity is typically defined as having an excess of body weight caused by a chronic caloric imbalance with more calories being consumed than expended each day.
Children who are obese are at a significantly elevated risk for adverse health outcomes including both medical and psychological problems. Psychosocial correlates of obesity include internalizing and externalizing disorders, ADHD, problems related to body image, reduced quality of life, low self-esteem, social isolation and discrimination.
We will review: Wellness and Fitness Milestones; and Fitness Ideas You Can Do at Home.

Milestones in Middle Childhood (6-11 years old)
Children in middle childhood go through tremendous changes in the growth and development of their brain. It’s important to know what typical development looks like in order to identify and to help those that are struggling with health concerns (socialsci.libretexts.org).
Doctors use certain milestones to tell if a child is developing as expected. There’s a wide range of what’s considered normal, so some children gain skills earlier or later than others. Children who were born prematurely reach milestones later. Always talk with your doctor about your child’s progress (choc.org).
