Catch and Cook: Sushi and Surf and Turf
As promised, we're going to the next level of shore lunch - catch and cook: sushi and surf and turf. One of our favourite parts of a fishing trip is finding new ways to prepare yummy fresh fish.
These are a couple of our go-to meals. They're not perfect yet but definitely pretty easy and super delicious. There is something about cooking steak and fish on a stick over a campfire that makes me feel closer to reality. The sushi could look complicated if you haven't done it before but if you've practiced it at home its just as easy out at camp. Be sure to try the raw trout sashimi, its a delicacy and yet it seems that not many people are doing it.
ling cod, or burbot, are caught in sets, or set lines. This type of fishing is always exciting as your imagination is constantly hooking giant bottom dwellers at all times of day. The set lines are very simple: a big hook on a steel leader, a 1-2lb weight and a long surface line attached to a float. Anyone can do it!
A big inspiration for these videos has been Tacu of Outdoor Chef Life https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNqpN335uVY9Sx_ZK_WuOAA, check out his channel, he seems like a terrific guy and certainly makes some fantastic beach fare.

Family Catch and Cook: Candied Rainbow Trout
Another successful family catch and cook with candied rainbow trout. This is the all-time simple but DELICIOUS shore lunch for rainbow trout.
Lightly salt and brown sugar, sit for a couple hours, rinse, smoke and baste with a little brown sugar syrup. We used some green alder on the campfire and presto! Smoked and Candied Rainbow Trout. So simple and yet the most tender, sweet, moist with crispy edges camp treat.
This is the first of two catch and cooks, and the next one is next level camp delicacy.

DIY Broadfork Project: Build and Break New Ground with a Broadfork
We're entering the mainstream fringe with this DIY Broadfork project and then literally breaking new ground with a broadfork.
With this simple and powerful tool you become a human homesteading machine. The kids started with a 3' of 3"x1/2" flatbar and 10' of 2" sched 40 pipe and quickly cut and welded it into a big bad 45lb broadfork beast.
This thing did what only a really powerful (expensive and loud) rototiller could have done, breaking hard clay down 12". Not only that but we all got a free core workout!
This DIY broadfork has already been a huge success and will last a lifetime!

Spot and Stalk Bear Hunt: Bear Chasing another Bear
Definitely more exciting than your average spot and stalk bear hunt. Getting close to a bear is thrilling and when they get close to you its even more exciting. This is the first time we've seen a bear chasing another bear and it is awesome!. We end up with a bit of a bear frenzy and they don't seem too bothered by us at all.
It feels great to be out hunting again after a long winter and we could use the meat after going 0/10 last fall on all our hunts.
Spot and stalk bear hunting always adds excitement, cause you never know what they'll do. We were surprised by what these bears did!

Prospecting for Gold on the Fraser River
Finally, our first trip of the year, prospecting for gold on the Fraser river. It's still a little icy but whatever, it's great to get out. We get a little gold, have great success agate hunting and watch the ice flows make their way south.
Also, I challenge Dan Hurd and Pioneer Pauly to a dual of epic proportion. Dan's skills vs. Pauly's style vs. the army of Gridlessness girls!

Baby Goats: From Labour and Birth to Super Cute Playful Goat Babies
Baby goats are the cutest babies ever, although watching them being born, from labour through birth, is maybe more educational than you care for.
We've been watching our Nubian milking gats carefully for a couple days and were able to be with them for the entire birth process. Although terrifying at first, these babies are super cute within minutes.
Because goats are so awesome, they easily have their babies without your help. This is another reason why they are a great animal for the off-grid homestead.

Homeschool Homestead: The Hong Kong Commentary
We've been a homeschool homestead for 12 years now and I guess it was inevitable that we eventually spill our guts about it.
The world doesn't need more kids that know the exact same facts from the exact same textbooks. We need kids with curiosity, passion, work ethic, kindness and a variety of life experiences.
Friends from Hong Kong filmed with us last spring and made a cool short documentary. They really focused on the homeschool aspect of our off grid homestead. The film is part of a mini-series airing on Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and you can watch the original here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLzc25U-JzE&feature=youtu.be
Of course it's in Cantonese so we had to dub in the english. I'm pretty sure we captured the intent although.... on a few occasions we did use a little imagination.
Check out Yeah Man's facebook page here:

If you're thinking about homeschool on the homestead, or in the city.... You can do it.

Hunting Fishing Loving Everyday: Living the Song - Moose Hunting, Fishing Rainbow Trout and Ling Cod
Living the Song - hunting fishing loving everyday! The coveted hunting and fishing trip, moose hunting, fishing rainbow trout and ling cod (burbot). This is a late season expedition that will likely test our character a bit. I'm just not sure why more people aren't on the lake?
Rainbow trout are awesome to catch and eat but there is something magical about setting a night line for Burbot (also known as freshwater ling cod). These things are tasty as they are ugly and can add up to a winters worth of fish and chips pretty fast.
If you love hunting fishing loving everyday and also generally being outside and you don't care too much about the weather or run-on sentences.... I feel the same. If you'd subscribe it would make my day even fishier!

Farm to Table: Killing and Butchering a Pig at home
Killing and butchering a pig is a big accomplishment for the homestead and it's quite a transformation from farm to table.
It starts with a super happy healthy free range pig....and a .22 cal between the eyes. We cut it right away to let it bleed out and string it up as soon as possible. After a quick rinse we skin it and then gut it. We'll let it cool down as much as possible and then get into the cutting. Besides the ribs and the front shoulders, we totally debone the carcass.
For the bacon I generally follow the instructions in the book "Mastering the craft of smoking food": https://www.amazon.ca/Mastering-Craft-Smoking-Warren-Anderson/dp/1580801358
Good luck, and as always, if you think I have more than 20lbs of my own bacon, click subscribe!

Hunting in Canada: Family Hunt for Mountain Goat
Hunting in Canada is always awesome, but a family hunt for mountain goat is both awesome and ridiculous.
See the problem is the mountain goats are a the top of the mountains. We're not a afraid of a little hiking, the real challenge is weather. If its socked in with rain or snow we can't really see to navigate or find the animals. Couple this with a rather large hunting party of 7 and it could be tricky to close the distance.
But whatever, the chance to go on a family hunt in the some of the most beautiful mountains in the world could never be a bad idea.

Making Water after Rainwater Collection Fail
With the rainwater collection and storage system depleted, it's time to make water the old fashioned way. Turns out that melting snow is not a big deal, it certainly doesn't cost very much.
Don't get me wrong, its not that making water is my favourite thing, but there is a time and place, and peace of mind, to know that we can't easily be denied the water we need.

The Perfect Elk Hunt, Packed Out on Horses
Maybe one of our most favourite hunts, bugling elk right from the house. That was only half the fun, having the whole family to help load it onto horses and pack it right to our front door made it perfect.
Elk is perhaps the best wild game and its been years since we've had any. It took a great shot with the Tikka 7mm and some hard work by the girls to bring home a years worth of meat.
