Pond Hockey AMBIANCE - The Off-Grid Experience
Do not be alarmed, this is not an action film, it is Pond Hockey Ambiance - just part of the off-grid experience. It is for the love of the sounds of the game; the skates carving ice, sticks on pucks, pucks hitting posts and the cheers of a hard earned goal. This is the first of many off-grid experience videos we'd like to upload to convey the peace and joy, the ambiance, of our off-grid homestead.

What does it take to make an Off Grid Hockey Rink?
It may seem pretty simple....but what does it take to make an off grid hockey rink?
We've been on this off grid homestead for 10 years now and we are finally working on one of our dream projects. It's a lot of time and money but we view it as an investment in our kids and our health, 'cause hockey is healthy!!
So what does it take to make an off grid hockey rink? To make it happen we logged and cleared an additional 1/3 acre, levelled a 70'x110' rink area and dug a 100,000 gallon pond, moving 100's of tons of dirt in the process. Then we need to actually flood the rink a half dozen times before the first skate....

Poutine for Breakfast - With Homemade Everything!
A small voice whispered... "Poutine for Breakfast!" and like all my brilliant ideas, Rose and the girls made it a reality. It is so exciting to make something as exquisite as poutine, especially when you're able to use all home made ingredients: fresh smoked ham, pork stock, French Fingerling potatoes and fresh cheese curds.
This is one of our finest achievements off grid and if we can do it, so can you!

Good Old Fashioned Deer Camp
I've always loved the good old fashioned deer camp. Friends and family and great food and a wood stove in the wall tent and deer hanging on the meat pole!
Getting meat is the core purpose but the experience is so much more than that. And unlike other hunting adventures, we can actually enjoy a good nights sleep and good food. Deer camp is like the vacation of hunting adventures.
Like the toques? they're merino wool, amazing quality and you can find them at our store: https://www.gridlessness.com/

Bugling Elk, Poison Berry Sauce and another Freakin' Grizzly Bear - Hunting Adventure
The real hunting experience complete with bugling elk, poison berry sauce and another freakin' grizzly bear.
Bugling elk is the highlight of any hunting trip but its the whole adventure in the woods that keeps us hooked. This trip we enjoyed a lot of wild berries including black currents and some sort of look-alike that we turned into poison berry sauce. Punctuated with another freakin' grizzly bear encounter, it seems that these things are a little too prevalent.

Prospecting for Gold - Can it Pay?
We have loved it for the last few years and now it's time to ask the question: Prospecting for Gold - Can it Pay?
First we need to find the paystreak, and then we'll process a couple tons of material through the highbanker. For the claim to pay we'll need to quantify the amount of gold per ton and the amount of gold recovered per day. We're using very basic equipment and excavating entirely by hand so there is very limited money invested.
The Dream Mat in our highbanker captured a lot of gold and is awesome for cleaning out. That said, I'm not certain it's the best mat for the tiny, flat gold we've got here.
The beauty of earning money by prospecting/gold mining is the freedom. It may or may not be the best pay but you are in total control of your work. You can go big or keep it simple, work a little or work a lot.

Best way to hunt Mountain Goat - Meanwhile a Grizzly Bear ate our Boat
We had a long trek planned but ended up hunting mountain goats from the lake and then trying to keep a Grizzly Bear out of the boat.
Finding a lake that can take you up to the mountain tops is definitely the best way to hunt Mountain Goats.
We just rediscovered this old footage of one of my most memorable hunts. It isn't the prettiest for sure but sometimes that's the way it goes, especially when you're just learning.

Rose shoots her first elk - WARNING - there is blood
We uncovered our very first video footage from 2009 when Rose shoots her first elk. There is something very special about being this close to a big game animal and Rose was pretty excited.
If you do not like hunting or seeing animals processed for food, this is the wrong video for you. WARNING - there is blood.
Rose uses her new Tikka T3 Lite .243 with Barnes Triple Shock solid copper bullets and watch to the end to see what it did!

The Most Magical Homestead Technology: Stick a Ram Pump in your Beaver Pond!
We stuck a ram pump in our beaver pond and it's proven to be the most magical homestead technology ever! Simpler than solar panels, cheaper than a wood stove and provides endless water....the life of a homestead.
This clever ram pump is designed and made by Seth Johnson from Land to House: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4GLavukUPziAY0DGPGXgSw
Check out his channel for everything ram pump.
The beaver pond is perfectly suited for the ram pump install, it has 6-8' drop over 100' run of pipe and the intake can just be flopped in the pond.
Think my kids deserve new mosquito nets? me too. Stop by our store https://www.gridlessness.com/shop and drop a couple bucks.
Check out our IG to keep you going between videos: https://www.instagram.com/gridlessness/?hl=en
Do you mistakenly think that something else is the most magical homestead technology? Wish your beaver pond had a ram pump in it? Never mind, just go ahead and sub and like and all that, it's far less controversial.

We made a 20 foot speargun and shot it through a brick wall
We made a 20 foot speargun and shot it through a brick wall to really get the feel for Physics. Learning cool stuff should make an impact, and it if does, it should be unforgettable.
Abby and I have been putting a little project together to cover the big ideas of Physics 11; work, energy and projectile motion. Homeschooling (Love it, but hate the name) gives us the license to create unforgettable education. Hopefully we can get around to a few more courses next year. Let us know if you have any good ideas?!

The perfect little 4x4 gets a cheap and dirty lift and homemade winch bumper
Sarah's perfect little 4x4 gets a lot better with a homemade winch bumper while Rose's XJ gets a cheap and dirty lift and a few little fixes. Finally we get a chance to test these things out a bit while winching out a stubborn firewood tree.
We found the 1.75" coil spring spacers at Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Y0wcr8
(If you follow this link and buy something we'll get a small commission. Thanks)
They were both fairly simple projects but lifting with blocks proved a little easier than with the extended shackles (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9lPi_BdDrA&t=2s). Both methods are pretty cheap and dirty and we should upgrade to a proper lift at some point.
We made a cut sheet for a local shop to get all the heavy pieces of steel cut for the bumpers. This was still pretty cheap and was definitely easier than slashing it all up with torch and grinder. The main pieces of steel used were 2"x6" rectangular tubing and 2"x2" receiver stock, both in 3/16". We did a lot of heavy winching recently (but after this video was recorded) and the bumpers held up great.
Agree that the jeep cherokee xj is the perfect little 4x4? Made your own cheap and dirty lift or homemade winch bumper? You're definitely one of us; go ahead and subscribe, ring the bell, and tell us about your cheap like borscht 4x4.

Turning forest into gardens with pigs
We've been turning forest into gardens with pigs for a few years now. For a low budget off grid homestead, it can be a great way to clear land and build gardens. It takes a while, and still requires manual labour but you don't need big machines, it's cheap like borsch, the pigs add fertilizer, AND it builds bacon at the same time.
Our process is pretty simple; log the big trees, fence, let the pigs destroy vegetation and loosen the ground, pick sticks, break the ground with a broadfork, and plant with straw (if you need to create topsoil).
We don't sell ham or veggies, but the girls make and sell some cool stuff on our store: https://www.gridlessness.com/shop
Did you know we actually post on the IG!? https://www.instagram.com/gridlessness/
The awesome music is courtesy of Jospeh Tebulte and Last Horse Standing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkU-CRn4SbM
