#HomeFreeAlaska #OffGrid #Alaska It's always fun to get away from the homestead & have a little fun. Today we surprised the boys with a trip to the Wildlife Conservation Center! All the Alaska grown animals, up close & personal! Then we spend a day at home, building our new, much needed, wood shed for our off grid cabin! Last winter we arrived in Alaska, snow was already on the ground and there was no time to stock up on wood. Joe & I had to go out in negative temps to harvest wood every 3 wks in order to heat the cabin. This year, we're being proactive & storing it up through the summer so we can stay toasty & warm inside this winter when its COLD outside! Our wood shed is 16X10. This will give us much needed space for storing up all the wood we need for the winter to heat our little 576 sq ft cabin here in the cold winters of Alaska. #HomeFreeAlaska #OffGrid #Alaska One week ago we invested in a flock of SHEEP for our homestead in Alaska! Pursuing our passion to live a life as self sufficient as possible, adding this flock to our homestead will provide dairy products & meat for our family for years to come. Our sheep are icelandic/shetland cross. They are a wool breed so today we'll be shearing them for the very 1st time! We plan to shear the sheep once a year each spring to help keep them cool in the warm summer months & allow them to grow a new coat to keep warm during the Alaskan winters. One year ago, we sold everything & headed West to continue our pursuit for a life of freedom & self sufficiency OFF GRID in ALASKA. We've built two homesteads from the ground up in Virginia, but this one is different because it's our forever home. The chickens will start laying this fall, and these sheep will provide dairy & meat for our family. No one is 100% self sufficient, and that's not our goal. Our goal is to do the best we can each day & most importantly grow as much of our own food as possible. Times are changing & it's crucial to know where your food comes from and what's IN IT! Alaska naturally provides wild game & an array of delicious fish & birds for our family. Adding the sheep to our homestead just sweetens the deal. They're smaller than cows, they eat less and are so easy to maintain. Plus their meat & milk is delish! #HomeFreeAlaska #OffGrid #Alaska Our little 600 sq ft off grid cabin here in Alaska, has a well. This is where we get all of our water from. Problem is, our original well is too shallow. Last year we had a deeper well drilled but haven't connected it to the cabin yet. Today we are finally getting this new well hooked up & hopefully solving our water issues for good! Joe's bringin' in the big guns with a tractor to dig a trench across the driveway for the piping. The snow has thawed, the pond is alive & the frogs are jumping! Time to do the things WE want to do now that we're retired...versus working on someone else's schedule. Mushers Secret moisturizing dog paw balm: https://geni.us/bxnmVLs FERMENTED CARROTS: (Makes 1 quart) Carrots 1TBS Salt (ex: sea salt or pink Himalayan salt, not iodized table salt) 1 Garlic clove Purified water 1 clean quart jar Place 1 garlic clove & 1 TBS salt in quart jar. Peel & quarter carrots. Pack carrots into jar as TIGHT as you can squeeze them in. Fill jar with water, make sure carrots are completely submerged. Put a coffee filter or clothe over top of the jar, secure with a string or jar ring. Allow carrots to ferment on the counter at room temp for at least 5 days. (I prefer 10 days, the longer the ferment, the more tangy the carrots). Remove coffee filter or clothe & secure a lid on the jar, place in the fridge & enjoy! They'll be good for months in the fridge! MEAT STOCK: Big pot Salt/pepper 1 medium onion 2 Garlic cloves 2-3 carrots Any other veggies or herbs you want to add 2TBS Apple Cider Vinegar Bones with meat still on. (Your choice, whole chicken, fish, beef bones etc) Place approx 1-2 quarts of water per pound of meat/bones into your pot. Add all of your veggies & seasonings. Simmer on low for 3-5 hours stirring occasionally. Strain the solids off & pour stock into clean containers/jars & store in the fridge for up to 5-6 days. Come along as we build our boys a DIY TREE FORT! A triangular shaped fort built 10ft up, anchored to three Alaskan birch trees. Their fort has a metal roof made from left over scraps from our chicken coop build & a homemade ladder. We're also tapping birch trees for the 1st time on our property & tasting the sap! Sometimes we have to slow down & take time away from the homestead chores & projects to reward the kiddos for their contributions.
