Semi-automatic firearms use the bullet to create a pressure seal and some of that gas is syphoned off to push the bolt back and load a fresh cartridge. Russia now knows that its internal airbases are no longer safe and they may need to protect these areas with surface-to-air missile systems. This increases the stress on air defenders and equipment. Naturally, they don't want to do this, so they turn their tank turrets to the rear as they approach Russian lines, which indicates surrender and they give themselves up to Russian forces. I don't believe that this is happening. To start, welders are a very precious resource and they are far more useful on repair duty than to be pulled off work to do something like weld someone inside a tank. You can argue that some units might have soldiers who can weld, but if they did, those soldiers would be in the rear welding. Second, Ukraine has fewer tanks than Russia and every single tank is precious. So it is unlikely that they would use such a resource on a one-way mission. Third, it is very difficult to see when "buttoned up" or enclosed inside a tank. So most tank crewmen ride with their heads sticking out of the turret. They only close the hatches when about to enter combat. So welding soldiers inside of tanks would make them far less effective. The answer is that it depends on the thickness of the ice. The formula for estimating how many inches of ice will support a vehicle's weight is h=4sqrt(P). Where P is the weight of the vehicle in tons. In the case of the Dnieper river, it seems like the most it freezes is 16 inches, which would only allow for a 16 ton vehicle - some some trucks and light infantry fighting vehicles like the BMP, but tanks would not be able to cross safely. The Russian Federation Army does not have any special ability to fight better in winter. An Army tends to reflect its population and 75% of Russia's population lives in urban areas. As in all armies, the poor tend to have greater representation, it is certainly possible that there is a larger percentage of soldiers who know cold weather survival and fieldcraft from their time growing up hunting and farming. However, unless these skills are transferred to other soldiers who grew up in an urban environment and soldiers are provided with good cold weather equipment, this may not help. Also note that winter makes everything harder. Soldiers need more calories. Vehicles need more Class III POL (Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant). It becomes more difficult to dig trenches and starting fires to keep warm could cause your position to be revealed. I don't know if we can make a determination that the Russian Army is not prepared for winter from a single video, but this week, the area near Kherson will be wet and cold - which is a recipe for hypothermia. If we see an uptick of vehicles going to field hospitals, that could indicate that there is an increase in cold weather injuries. Back in 1998, the mayor of a Boucherville, Quebec, used a Canadian National Railway diesel locomotive to provide power for his community during power outage after an ice storm. Diesel locomotives are really just large generators, providing propulsion through electricity as opposed to a straight mechanical connection. While this might be a great idea on a small scale, it is not practical for the entire country of Ukraine, especially since roughly 45% of Ukraine's rail network is electrified. The headstamps on a recovered DShK shell casings appear to be marked with the Persian words "DShK" (دوشکا), Defense Industries organization (DIO) ساصد / سازمان صنایع دفاع جمهوری اسلامی ایران and the Persian number 70 (۷۰). Since the primers on the shells were dented, this indicates the the shells were fired, possibly by a DShK machine gun. The DShK machine gun is an anti-material / anti-light armored vehicle machine gun firing a 12.7x108mm shell - something that is roughly the length of a man's hand. DO NOT PLACE YOURSELF AT RISK TO GET PICTURES. Several shell casings were recovered from protests in what may be Javanrud, Kermanshah Province, Iran. These casings share common traits with 12.7x108mm machine gun rounds which are commonly used on the Soviet-era DShK machine gun. Note that this cartridge also shares commonality with the Russian KSVK 12.7 anti-material rifle, although I don't believe that this weapon is in use by Iran. This is tough to estimate because the sounds of firing in some of the protest videos do not match the sounds of DShKs. If this is correct, then Iran's regime has resorted to battlefield weapons that have no purpose at protests other than to cause loss of life in the most gruesome ways. A cruise missile simply followed the power lines up into Ukraine and kept going after it missed its target. I do not believean S300 missile was involved in the event because the missile would be going the wrong way. Surface to Air missiles expend all of their energy in the first few seconds of flight and do not have the ability to execute a U-turn. It is possible, however that a cruise missile may have been shot down if coming from Belarus, although that would mean the intercept was performed over Poland. Russia was able to perform two very difficult maneuvers in their recent escape from the Ukrainian city of Kherson. The first maneuver was a successful crossing of the Dnipro River under pressure. The second maneuver was a successful rear passage of lines, were Russian Federation forces linked up with and then moved through the lines of friendly forces. River crossings are probably one of the most difficult maneuvers to perform in warfare. They require that vehicles queue up and cross single file, making them excellent targets. And soldiers can't fight from vehicles while they are crossing. I believe that Russia had to make a decision - to abandon vehicles and save their men which meant their men would be combat ineffective without their equipment. Or try to cross with their men and equipment which could mean losing soldiers and equipment. Russia went with the second option. In war, you always want to give your enemy dilemmas, not problems. The aircraft dropped a sonobuoy and the crew supposedly responded by threatening the aircraft with a man-portable air-defense rocket (MANPADS). This may have happened, but the video does not support the claim. The initial video is probably a Borei class submarine, but the video with the MANPADS indicates a Lada diesel-electric submarine. This is based on the changing location of the ensign and the large snorkel that indicates a Lada submarine.
