Russian Telegram claims that 5 Tu-95 and bombers were heavily damaged, 2 were lightly damaged and the strike resulted in several ground crew casualties. I am not sure if this is true and satellite coverage has been hampered by clouds. However, if it is true than Russia needs to do one of 3 things: #1. Step of their air defense game. #2. Rebase their forces out of range of Ukrainian drones. Both of these choices have associated costs. Rebasing will protect these assets, but it takes a lot of effort to move squadrons of aircraft -especially maintenance heavy bombers. Protecting these bases with air defense assets will shrink the pool of air defense assets available at the borders of Ukraine. Dilemmas not problems. Attention YouTube reviewer: This is noncombat training footage. The white bags are "charges" - basically bags of propellent. The more charges tied to the round, the further the mortar round will travel. Using cloth bags is leftover from the Soviet era. NATO mortar shells use prepacked "cheese charges" which are already attached to the round for a maximum charge. The charges are then removed to reduce the range that the shell will travel. These 140A and 14K have served for at least 10-20 years and all they do is missile defense, making them walking gods of air defense knowledge. So any missile systems sent to Ukraine would need these contractors who are most likely former 140A or 140Ks accompanying the system as subject matter experts, which could put Americans at risk. Changing any army's behavior is typically very difficult. And Russia especially does not like to innovate or give responsibility to small unit leaders. So If this footage is correct, it could indicate a new phase in the ware where Russia is starting to use armed COTS drones to conduct operations. Like my shirts?
