Did you know that there is much more to see than just the tourist-ridden temples where droves of local and foreign tourists alike are dropped off by the busload? Bali has so much more to offer than just those very busy places to score your Instagram picture or Tiktok video! This Sunday I’ll release a short video with an example of this. We start off at the Danau Bratan temple complex, one of the most well-known and most tourist-busy, probably in the entire country. But we’ll drive up to the Danau Tamblingan temple. That see-through toilet in Tokyo was all the rage when it was opened a few years go, so Jakarta decided it was a good idea to copy that and make their own transparant glass toilets. Have you ever wondered what Jakartans do on their Saturday evening? I got the answer! Last Saturday evening, a dry and relatively cool one, thousands of Jakartans flocked to the recently opened busway stations of Tosari and Bundaran HI as both of them now feature huge observation decks. You too can visit, you only need to be checked in, which will cost 3.000 rupiah, or less than 20 eurocent. And you can take the bus between both stops, of course. With the Welcome Monument – right in the middle of the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, or Bundaran HI – as backdrop, many flock to these open air decks for their latest Instagram pictures and TikTok video’s. As thee are located away from the pedestrian zones downstairs, it’s more relaxed here. No less noisy though, as Jakarta evening traffic still crawls through the neighborhood as on any other day. This mass brawl broke out on a Gol Airlines flight in Brazil over a dispute about a window seat. The altercation started when a mother asked to swap seats with her child and was declined. The situation quickly escalated and cabin crew tried to intervene but were unsuccessful. This video showed one woman's crop top being pulled down during the fight. A Gol airlines flight from Salvador to Sao Paulo, both in Brazil, earlier this week was the scene of a pre-take-off. The airline said in a statement following the massive fight that took place on board of flight G3 1659 last Thursday. After the brawl died down, 15 passengers were kicked off the flight. Gol Airlines released a statement condemning the act of violence and emphasized their top priority is safety. I can understand beaches can't always be top notch clean, even in the best of circumstances, but what I found at the beaches of Kuta and Legian in the southern part of the resort island of Bali was appaling. I haven't seen it this bad. When I visted, it wasn't cleaned for days and there were building materials everywhere. Local government should never allow this to happen, especially if you want to position yourself for somewhat more wealthy tourists. Did you know that a few days ago, on January 27, an Emirates Airbus A380 flew thirteen hours, and then landed at its departure airport again? Flight EK-448 from Dubai to Auckland in New Zealand was en route for some six hours, when the pilots were instructed to turn the plane around to fly back again. But why, do you ask? Well, the reason is pretty simple, yet sad: the airport of Auckland was hit by severe flooding, shutting down the entire airport. There was a large amount of water inside the terminal building and the single runway was also closed because there was severe flooding. Instead of diverting the huge Airbus A380 to another airport, let’s say Christchurch in New Zealand of maybe even Sydney in Australia, it was decided to bring back all the passengers and crew. This probably saved the airline a lot of additional troubles to organize everything for the passengers at an odd location. A 19-year-old woman from Brazil was arrested on the first day of 2023 when she arrived at the resort island of Bali for surfing lessons. She was apprehended with 3.9 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage, as local police has just recently made public. While the full name of the young woman are public record by now – Indonesian as well as Brazilian news outlets published it for example, I’m not going to name her as she has not been convicted and it’s very possible that she’s coerced into bringing the illegal drugs to the island. Indonesia has one of the most strict anti-drug laws on this planet, so don’t even think of bringing anything into the country for personal use, let alone with the intend to distribute – something that the judge decides for you based on the amount of drugs you have with you. The woman is currently in jail awaiting trial, where she can receive the death sentence. Indonesia occasionally hands these out. Well, almost all passengers, but that’s still great news! Singapore Airlines did a trial among it’s premium passengers with free inflight connectivity on most of their planes, after making inflight WiFi cheaper than it used to be a few years back. Mayor improvements all around, but the airline has now announced most passengers will be getting free WiFi access on all planes except the Boeing 737-800 NG’s. First class and business class passengers will get free and unlimited access to WiFi throughout the flight. Coverage isn’t 100% worldwide of course, so keep in mind having internet on board is not a right, it’s a feature! PPS card holders in premium economy and economy will also get unlimited WiFi, but if you’re a KrisFlyer member, you will get a three hour and two hour surf plan respectively. If you aren’t a member of KrisFlyer yet, you now have one more reason so create an account, as non-members can only purchase their WiFi access. Chillax, yes, that’s the name of Jakarta’s newest food court here along Sudirman. It has been opened a short while ago, so let’s have a look! Among the latest in outdoor food courts in Jakarta over the recent years, Chillax is a little plot partially tucked away between high rise office buildings that are typical for Jakarta’s Central Business District. It’s location right along Sudirman street, a few hundred meters from Setiabudi MRT station and the city’s busway network, make it very convenient to go here for breakfast – yes, breakfast, as some places open as early as seven in the morning, lunch and dinner. There is even a place selling cold beers, which is actually quite rare still to see in food courts like these in the city. Apart from the large sushi and steak restaurants at the main road, it’s the little outlets at the back of them that are probably the most interesting. They are also away from main road traffic, but the music playing may be too loud. In the upcoming video this Sunday, we make a walk through parts of the tourist hot spot of the resort island of Bali in Indonesia. It’s a no voice-over video for you to enjoy, but I have added comments as texts every once in a while to highlight the things that I noticed compared to earlier visits to Bali over the last 20 years or so. When walking around I noticed a number of remarkable things, one major negative thing was the piles of trash along the beachfront road. As if it hadn’t been cleaned for quite some time. It was in no way just waste from the day before. And then I don’t even talk about the beaches. They are probably at the worst I have ever seen. Today is Chinese New year, or Imlek, as it's called in Indonesian. A few days ago I visted the oldest Buddhist temple in Jakarta, tucked away from the main road along a small alleyway in an old area of the city. This temple was first built in 1698 and is the oldest Buddhist temple in Jakarta, but it doesn't even make the top ten oldest in Indonesia! After traveling around in Malaysia and Thailand for just a few days it's time to fly back to Indonesia. A Yeti Air plane en route from Nepal’s capital of Kathmandu to the city of Pokhara to the northwest has crashed into the mountainous country. 72 people on board of the plane – 68 passengers and 4 crew – are feared dead. The plane was a 15 year old ATR-72 with registration 9N-ANC. A spokesperson for the company informed that rescue workers were headed to the scene to put out the burning plane and to hopefully find survivors. The Nepali government also responded with the mobilization of rescue and security personnel. There have been 30 plane crashes with fatalities in Nepal in the last three decades. Far worse than any other country in the world. Domestic and foreign operated planes crashed over the years, killing hundreds of people. Did you know there are no flights to this is 200 million dollar Indonesian airport? Kertajati International Airport was completed in 2018 but has seen very limited flights since it’s start, with only a few airlines trying to open routes to and from the airport that is located basically in the middle of the rice paddies roughly west of the city of Cirebon, or some 70 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital of Bandung. In 2019 airlines were forced to move some of their operations from the city airport in Bandung to Kertajati, but without any proper means of transport (no train or toll road connections) airlines opted not to fly. It didn’t take long for flights to and from Bandung to be reinstated. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, this airport has seen only a dozen or so flights, charter flights to bring those going on pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. And that was in November 2022. Since then, operations have seized again. In the upcoming video this Sunday we’re going to make a nightly walk through Bangkok. This pretty safe city in Southeastern Asia is one of the biggest cities in the world but still manages to quiet down during the evening hours. We start at one of the main tourist places of Bangkok, Khao San Road, where life is almost as it used to be before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down worldwide tourism. It hasn't been that long since I have been in a sleeper train, but that was on another continent and through different countries. We're in Thailand now and are about to hop on the sleeper train from Hat Yai in the south all the way to Bangkok. Sinaloa cartel shoots at Aeromexico passenger plane 🇲🇽 After the arrest of the son of Joaquín Guzmán - better known as “El Chapo” - Ovidio Guzman, members of the Mexican Sinaloa cartel tried to instigate a riot - or even worse. They shot at an airborne military plane near Culiacán Airport, but they also fired shots at an Aeromexico passenger plane on the ground. In several videos that have surfaced online earlier today, passengers of the actual plane can be seen taking cover. In other videos small weapons fire can be heard around the airport as well. Members of the cartel have additionally closed off part of 'their' area. None of the passengers on the Aeromexico plane was injured and the military plane also was able to successfully land at the airport without injuries reported. In the upcoming video, this 18-hour long trip in the sleeper train from southern Thailand all the way to the capital city of Bangkok, many hundreds of kilometers to the north. Did I manage to actually get some sleep? How were the meals? And the bed? So many things to review on a long trip like this. At the departure station of Hat Yai I was told numerous times not to film or make video. I will also explain why that is. Fortunately, as soon as we boarded the train, that burden was no longer there, so I only had to deal with open train doors and dirty windows during the trip. It's time to catch a train today! Well, more than one, but we'll start with the first one. It's an intercity train from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar, right at the border with Thailand. In the upcoming video this weekend my train trip from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar, both in Malaysia. The KTM ETS train runs this five and a half hour trip almost due north and brings me right to the border with Thailand, which I later crossed.
