The story of the 2001 Daytona 500 and Dura Lube 400 at Rockingham: NASCAR's longest week
Presenting Parts One through Four of "#500DAYS," now with remixed audio and combined into a single video.
In PART ONE, as the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season draws to a close, Ray Evernham unexpectedly ends his tenure as Jeff Gordon’s crew chief. Evernham’s new ambition – bringing Dodge back to NASCAR’s top series – singlehandedly alters the trajectory of the 2000 season, which becomes a year of tremendous change.
In PART TWO, the cars and stars of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series arrive in Daytona to prepare for the “Great American Race.” Awaiting them is the most aggressive aerodynamic package that NASCAR has yet conceived, bringing a mix of slingshots and pack racing to the sport’s biggest race.
In PART THREE, after 500 days of anticipation and a week of intense racing, the stage is set for the most competitive Daytona 500 in recent memory, starring the track’s most celebrated driver.
In PART FOUR - At first, the wreck didn’t look so bad. Just another of a series of late-race incidents in NASCAR’s most prestigious race. After all, the day belonged to Michael Waltrip, who finally broke through with his first win in his 463rd start. But conspicuously absent from victory lane was team owner Dale Earnhardt, who had yet to climb from his wrecked No. 3. What was announced that evening – and what followed over the next several days – would shake the sport of professional stock car racing to its core.

PART SIX: ATLANTA – 500 Days: Lost Storylines of the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Season
Mike Skinner once called the Atlanta Motor Speedway the “Earnhardt Speedway” for how dominant his teammate had been at the track’s 1.5-mile oval. Skinner said so in March 2000, just minutes after a blown engine kept him from his first Winston Cup victory, and moments before Earnhardt would win there for a ninth time. Now without Earnhardt in the 43-car field, would Skinner finally break through – or perhaps his new teammate, rookie Kevin Harvick, who rolled into the race fresh off his first Top Ten?

PART FIVE: LAS VEGAS – 500 Days: Lost Storylines of the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Season
Las Vegas marked the third race of the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Season, where fans continued to pay tribute to the life of Dale Earnhardt. With Sterling Marlin now atop the point standings, Dodge teams were favored at a track Roush Racing’s Ford team had dominated in its brief history. But the first “No Bull 5” race of the season proved particularly competitive.

Episode 10.5 - The Nextel Open
On the night of May 22, 2004, eight “field fillers” complete the 25-car grid for the Nextel Open, the 30-lap qualifying race for the 20th renewal of the newly rebranded NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge. At the time, the likes of Morgan Shepherd, Kirk Shelmerdine, and Andy Hillenburg aren’t considered serious threats for the win – or even winning a vote from the fans. But racing is an unpredictable sport, and the list of contenders can change in an instant.

500 DAYS PART FOUR - Before The Premiere
A short video played before the premiere of Part Four of "500 Days" on January 11, 2023.
PART FOUR - 500 Days: Lost Storylines of the 2001 Daytona 500 (NASCAR Documentary)
At first, the wreck didn’t look so bad.
