Children of God — Draw Close to God
Reflecting on our amazing heritage as children of God can inspire and motivate us to draw close to God as our Father. We are reminded by Jesus that in order to have this close relationship, this deep personal attachment to our Father, we must become as little children. Parents understand the importance of listening to their children and responding to their needs, similarly God hears us and provides the care we need. God wants us to have the heart of a child who cries out for help and trusts in him to respond. Consider the examples of Jeremiah, Jonah, Asa, and Jehoshaphat, men who looked to God for their safety and security in times of great distress. Let their stories encourage us in our times of trial, so we may draw close to God and put our trust in his deliverance.

Enemies — Dealing with the Adversaries
Jesus had enemies, those who hated his message and denied his authority to speak for God. And those who follow in Jesus' footsteps as his disciples will also need to deal with enemies. Yet, ultimately, Jesus, the Lord of Lords, will return and when he does his adversaries will attempt to fight against him. But the Lord of Hosts will defeat those who hate him and remain hostile to his way of life. The Lord will destroy all of his enemies, but this is only the final chapter in a long history.
So what about now? And what about us? What should our attitude and approach be when it comes to our adversaries?
The scriptures provide ample guidance.

Restoring the Paths — Reviving the Household of God
The church of God is in a state of disrepair as a result of decades of attacks from without and within. This has divided the people of God and limited their effectiveness in performing God's will. And what is God's will? Often referred to as the 'Great Commission,' the will of God is that his people should 'teach all nations (ethnic groups) to observe all the things that were commanded in the scriptures.' And in so doing, they would make more disciples to carry on this work. Christ would be working through his people, generation after generation, and this work would continue to be done until the time of Christ's return. So are we working to restore the paths as Christ would desire us to do?

Restoring the Paths — Ezra and Nehemiah Rebuilding the Walls
Ezra and Nehemiah
Ezra the scribe had returned to Jerusalem with a valuable cargo of precious vessels to restore the temple worship. But he was greatly dismayed by the moral and spiritual state of the people. It would seem that they had fallen back into many of the harmful practices that had led to their captivity in the first place. Eventually, as a result of dealing with dangers without, and betrayal within the community, Ezra knew he would need help. He understood the importance of rebuilding the walls, both literally and metaphorically. They were needed to protect a pure relationship with God and defend against corrupting outside influences.
Paul, in his writings, alluded to this episode in biblical history. He likened believers to vessels in God's temple and highlighted the importance of being pure and prepared to do God's service.

Children of God — Love and Belonging
As children of God we are part of a family with God as our Father and many brothers and sisters. To maintain strong family ties and build close relationships, Jesus provided us the key.
He instructed his disciples, his followers, to love others in the same way that he had loved them.
This is a tall order! And yet it is vital to maintaining the bonds that bind families and church brethren together. So how do we love one another? And what is love, agape, as defined by the God whose defining characteristic is love?
Jesus’ parable of the servants who owed a debt gives us insight into one of love’s chief characteristics. James' metaphor about the tongue and how we speak to and about others highlights another aspect of love. Paul’s instructions to the Romans provides us with a broad summary of God’s application of the qualities of love.
Join us in this journey through the scriptures to understand how we can enhance our love of others in practical ways, in order to build up our family relationships.

Christ — Who is Your Rock
Who is Your Rock? When it comes to security and safety, the bible uses the metaphor of building on the Rock, instead of sand or gravel. Over the past decade people in a variety of places around the world have experienced disastrous consequences for having built on sand. At these locations in times of earthquake, buildings, roads and bridges have been destroyed due to liquefaction of the underlying sand or silt. This has had huge costs in terms of lives lost and infrastructure damaged. Spiritually speaking, if we build on sand – worthless and shifting ideologies — when tectonic social or political shifts occur, the result is personal disaster. So are we building on the Rock or on sand?

Fellowship of the King
In Genesis, the book of beginnings, God initiated a plan that has been consistent through time. It was a plan for man to be brought into fellowship with God and to work in partnership to accomplish his purpose. Yet, there would be challenges, as powerful spiritual forces would always be at work trying to undermine the plan and enslave the people.
Like Frodo and Sam in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, we, as believers, have 'fallen into this story' and have become part of a fellowship — the Fellowship of the King. Once baptized, we became committed to this struggle of God's vision of light versus the opposing vision of tyranny and darkness. We become 'called out ones' and fellow servants sharing a common purpose and working in partnership with God to re-establish the Kingdom of light.
Are you a part of this fellowship and engaged in the work God has called us to do?

Atonement or Too Late for Repentance?
The story of Esau is a sad tale of someone who could not repent and repair the damage done when he despised his birthright and traded it for a bowl of stew. Sometimes it is too late for repentance. The generation of those who saw all of God's miracles in delivering them from Egypt lost out on their promised land. They too had put themselves into a situation where it was 'too late for repentance.' The history of God's people is full of examples where communities and individuals habitually despised and rejected God's word, his instructions, and refused to repent. On the other hand God had made provisions in his teaching for atonement. God would forgive those who sinned unwittingly and then willingly acknowledged their errors and took steps to make amends.
Have we sinned to the point that we are concerned that it is too late for repentance? Examine the life of Paul, the mercy God extended to him and the commission he gave him. Consider John's wisdom on the topic of propitiation for sin and Christ's atoning sacrifice. We need not walk a path of opposition to God and his ways. There is time yet to repent and change and find atonement.

The Spirit — Our 'Down-Payment" on Eternity
The apostle Paul readily admitted that it was not his motivational speaking that had brought so many Gentiles into a knowledge of the hope of the gospel. Rather these new converts were being convicted by the spirit of God. The Spirit of God had worked in their minds so they could renounce their past, put away their sinful lifestyles, and embrace a totally new way of living
These changes were not without their challenges and often left new believers in difficult situations in a society that was wholly absorbed in pagan thought. But God's spirit in them would be the power they needed to resist outside influences, while being transformed spiritually on the 'inside.' Paul's audience was familiar with temple worship, so Paul used this idea but totally reframed it to help the Gentiles understand God's plan. No longer would they 'go to the temple' for they themselves were temples of the Holy Spirit and had been purchased by God with Christ's sacrifice. Now they were to live new lives empowered by the Spirit to take care of the 'temple' of their mind and body. And why? God had work for them to accomplish through his spirit. Take a walk with us through the scriptures to gain a deeper understanding of the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of every child of God.

Christ Must Return — All Things Fulfilled
The disciples during Jesus' ministry expected Jesus, the Messiah, to fulfill all of the prophecies written about him in the Hebrew scriptures. In fact he had promised them that he had come to fulfill all that was written in the law, the writings, and the prophets.
And yet, when quoting the book of Isaiah in the synagogue, Jesus stopped his message half-way through the passage and declared that this portion of the scripture had been fulfilled.
Christ had indeed come to bring the 'good news,' but there was more to the prophecy.
What remained to be fulfilled did not happen in the first century AD. In fact, it has not yet happened. There are those who would deny the scripture and allegorize away the prophecies saying they are all fulfilled 'spiritually'. But if you believe the reality of scripture then you have the hope that Christ will return as promised to fulfill 'all things.' So what remains to be fulfilled and when will these things happen? Let the scriptures reveal the whole story.

Judgement and Justice - God's Standards
Judgement and Justice are vital issues in the mind of the Creator. In teaching the children of Israel the Lord God spelled out in detail his code of holiness - those things that were just and right in his sight. When it came to matters of judgement, the Lord God expected impartiality and a fair application of the laws that he had given the people. In contrast to the unjust rulers of his day, Christ instructed his followers to consider the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy and faithfulness in their relationships with others. When the Lord returns as Messiah to save his people one of his roles will be that of judge executing justice — rewarding the righteous and destroying the wicked.
So what does God expect of us today? Do we understand the weightier matters of the law? When we must make judgments, are we careful to judge with fairness and impartiality based on the standards set by God?

Temptation — Don't Give Way to What is Wrong
The apostle Paul wrote that temptation was something common to all human experience. But that it could be resisted by those who put their trust in God. He would faithfully provide the help needed to endure without yielding to temptation.
Interestingly, Paul tied resisting temptation into the concept of fleeing from idolatry. This can be understood in its broadest sense when we realize that anything that is more important to us than God and his way is an 'idol.'

Don't Rationalize a False Faith - Countering Christian Minimalists
Why did most Christians compromise or collaborate with the Nazi's in the 1930's? The history of that time is very instructive for our time. It also recalls a time in the history of God's people when there were those faithful few who stood up to the overwhelming might of the Seleucid empire . And were it not for their faith in the truth of scripture and their courage to fight the evil of the time then there would have been no Jewish nation when Jesus, the Messiah was born.

Duty and the Royal Ruler
In rehearsing 70 years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II many commentators wrote of her sense of duty and devotion to her people. Though monarchy is not the norm in our world, yet it is of vital concern in the scriptures. For the message of the gospel is one of a great King of Kings and his coming Kingdom.
Daniel envisioned the time in which the Messiah would return to earth and take up the throne of David. This theme of the return of the King to claim his Kingdom is reinforced by all the New Testament writers. So it is no wonder that God should provide guidance in his Word as to the duty of a King or Queen.
